  • Objectives : This study is designed to explore the experience of patients who received facial Qigong exercise education, to identify whether facial Qigong exercise is effective for Bell's Palsy patients and to aid in developing a more efficient exercise program. Methods : Eight patients who visited the Facial Palsy Center in Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital between September 2014 and December 2014 for treatment of Bell's palsy were interviewed. All patients received facial Qigong exercise education at least two times. The interview was conducted for 20 to 30 minutes and included discussion related to the experience of facial palsy, facial Qigong exercise and suggestions for a more efficient facial Qigong program. Results : The patients replied that they experienced emotions such as anxiety, depression and confusion when they discovered the symptoms of facial palsy. They also suggested that they had regained mental stability and physically recovered through facial Qigong exercise and also suggested possible improvements for the system of facial Qigong exercise in terms of time/place/educator. Conclusions : The results from the interviews suggest that facial Qigong exercise might be an effective treatment for Bell's Palsy patients from a psychological and physical perspective. A more patient-centered environment should be established to ensure efficient treatment.

The object of this research is to evaluate the effect of Qigong on a subjective symptom scale, on the grade of discomfort and pain in everyday life, BMI, fat(%), muscular strength, shoulder joint movement, in post-mastectomy women. Methods : The study used a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. The experimental group received a Qigong 3 times a week for 12 weeks from September 7th to December 28th in 2009. The subjects were 40 patients are divided into 25 persons in experimental groups and 15 persons in contrastive group. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test. A P-value less than .05 was considered significant by 2-tailed test. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS win(ver 12.0). Results : The results were as follows : The score in the subjective symptom(p=.040), and score of anxiety (p=.024), fat(%)(p=.007) were significantly decreased after Qigong program. The values for shoulder flexibility (left : p=.010, right : p=.008), and Muscular strength(grip power)(left : p=.021, right : p=.029) significantly increased after Qigong program. And Flexion(left ; p=.029), Extension(left : p=.001, right : p=.038), Adduction(left ; p=.001, right ; p<0.001) were also significantly increased after Qigong Conclusions : The Qigong is an effective health promotion program for post-mastectomy women.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of four common types of Qigong position (standing, sitting, supine, and horse-riding position) on the autonomic nervous system. Thirty healthy subjects participated in this study once a week for four weeks. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured three times (before, during, and after the position) while the subject maintained one of four positions for ten minutes. There were significant changes in HRV components compared with EEG power spectra in the standing position. Especially, the ratio of low-to-high frequency (LF/HF) which represents a state of balance of autonomic nervous system was increased. In the sitting position, $\beta$ wave which reflects a state of alert consciousness was increased and both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves were activated. On the other hand, in the spine position, $\theta$ wave which signifies a state of relaxation was increased and heart rate (HR) was decreased. Activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves was also observed in this position. Significant increases of indices related to awakening and concentration were observed accompanied by increase of HR and a sympathetic nerve was activated in the riding-horse position. In the present study, it was shown that each Qigong position caused various and significant changes in autonomic nervous system. It would be expected that these results can be applied in the choice of appropriate Qigong position according to objective of Qigong therapy although it is remained to further evaluate the effects of long-term maintenance of Qigong positions and repeated Qigong training.

We searched Pubmed and Chinese Academic Journals(CAJ) over time periods from their inception to August 13th, 2013. We analyzed the systematic reviews of Qigong and clinical trials of Daoyin. Total 12 Qigong and 16 Daoyin(11 Baduanjin, 4 Wuqinxi, 1 unspecified type of Daoyin) articles were met our inclusion criteria. As the results of our analyzation, Qigong was dominant in chronic or incurable disease. On the other hand, Daoyin was dominant in internal diseases or functional improving of internal organs. As using "Qi" is in common between Qigong and Daoyin, they have not been differentiated in world of traditional Korean medicine. However, it could be better to use the Qigong and Daoyin according to their effectual difference.
