  • Oceanic pycnocline depth is usually obtained from in situ measurements. As ocean internal waves occur on and propagate along oceanic pycnocline, it is possible to estimate the depth remotely. This paper presents a method for retrieving pycnocline depth from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery where internal waves are visible. This model is constructed by combining a two-layer ocean model and a nonlinear internal wave model. It is also assumed that the observed groups of internal wave packets on SAR imagery are generated by local semidiurnal tides. Case study in East China Sea shows a good agreement with in situ CTD data.

  • The diffusion characteristics of an ocean dumping material in the south-eastern East/Japan Sea related to regulate the physical characteristics with the observation and the hydraulic experiment are investigated. The main results are as follows; (1) Spying CTD observation result of the area of Jung in the East/Japan Sea, the ocean dumping area had influenced the Tsushima Warm Current of high temperature and salinity. Horizontal turbulent diffusivity is 1.913$\times$10$^{7}$ by drogue tracking. (2) From the experiment of settling, the initial settling velocity of each material is 1.0~2.7 cm/sec according to the specific gravity and initial concentration. In the pycnocline, particles didn't settle under the pycnocline any more and accumulated. It is signified that calculation of the sedimentation rate of the ocean dumping material including of vertical diffusion must be regard the pynocline in the ocean area have well-developed pycnocline. (3) Vertical turbulent diffusivity were 2.219$\times$10$^{-8}$ ~8.874$\times$10$^{-4}$ cm$^2$/sec from the experiment of settling. And, the pycnocline influenced the vertical turbulent diffusivity.

  • The solution for wind drift current in a three-layered open sea region is derived using the Galerkin-Eigenfunction mothod. The presence of discontinuities in the vertical eddy viscosity required a definition of a scalar product which involves the summation of integrals defined over each layer. The expansion of fourth-order B-spline functions is used in determining eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions. In a three-layered system a low value of eddy viscosity is prescribed within the pycnocline to represent the suppression of turburent intensity at the thermocline level. A high concentration of knots within the pycnocline is important in determining eigenfunctions and the associated eigenvalues accurately. Due to the global property of eigenfunctions nonphysical oscillations appear in the current profiles below the surface layer, particularly within the pycnocline.

The main results are as follows; (1) Spying CTD observation result of the area of Jung in the East Sea, the ocean dumping area had influenced the Tsushima warm current of high temperature and salinity. Horizontal turbulent diffusivity is 1.913${\times}$10$^{7}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/sec by drogue tracking. (2) From the experiment of settling, the initial settling velocity of each material is 1.0∼2.7 cm/sec according to the specific gravity and initial concentration. In the pycnocline, particles didn't settle under the pycnocline any more and accumulated. (4) From the result of diffusion simulation in the East Sea, the co-concentration line of 0.05 ppm and 0.1 ppm are limited at dumping area after 200 days. The constant concentration line of 0.01 ppm is distributed to the vicinity of Ulleungdo and Tokdo, but isn't distributed to the coastal area of East Sea and southern area of Jung in the East Sea.

  • A two-layer incompressible time-accurate Euler solver is applied to analyze flow fields around a submerged body moving at a critical speed near a pycnocline. Discontinuities in the dependent variables across the material interface are captured without any dissipation or oscillation using the ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. It is shown that the material interlace has significant effects on forces acting on a submerged body moving near a pycnocline regardless of the small difference in densities of two layers. Contrary to the shallow water waves, a submerged body can reach a critical speed at very low Froude number due to the small difference in the densities of the two layers.

  • To characterize community structure and distribution of phytoplankton, cluster analyses are performed on quantitative data of phytoplankton collected from the southwestern sea of Korea in early summer, 1980. The cluster analysis shows that the phytoplankton of the study area consists of three distinct characteristic communities, representing different water masses. The species of the first community, predominant in the southwestern coastal were of the main land, are mostly neritic and cold water diatoms. The second community consists of neritic and oceanic diatoms, a few flagellates and an euglenoid. These species are predominant in the vicinity of Jeju Island with warm and high saline waters which seems to be a branch of the Kuroshio Current. The species of the last community, consisting primarily of small-sized dinoflagellates, are predominant in the rest part of the study area with warm and low saline water. Addition, the vertical distributions of phytoplankton and environmental factors show that high concentration of phytoplankton cells, chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen are observed near the seasonal pycnocline in the off-coastal area. Fraction of nanoplankton take the above 90% of the total cell concentration in the surface mixed layer of off-coastal area where the seasonal pycnocline develops in summer.

  • A simple two-and -half-layer model is used to study the circulation of South China Sea( SCS ). The model is coming from the reduced gravity model of Hurbult and Thompson, with the assumption of rigid surface. It shows there is no distinct branch of the Kuroshio into the SCS. Both the upper and lower pycnocline height anomaly show that the main feature of the circulation of SCS is a cyclone, which is generated by the transportion of the vorticity from the Kuroshio. Aftr generated, the cyclone moves westward due to the beta effect, then dissipates near the west boundary due to the viscosity. After an old one dissipates, a new one appears again. The life cycle of the cyclone is about 160 days.

  • Seasonal changes of abundance of the main phytoplankton groups of species (diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, small flagellates and cryptophytes) and a set of environmental parameters were investigated in coastal and pre-estuarine waters of Peter the Great Bay (East/Japan Sea) in May-October of 1998 and 1999. Three periods of mass development were revealed: spring, summer and autumn blooms, with successive change of species. The conditions favourable for each group of species were determined. Driving mechanisms of the succession include nutrients transport through seasonal pycnocline by turbulent mixing, terrestrial nutrients supply by monsoon floods, nutrients supply by upwellings, and light control by the thickness of upper mixed layer. Summer succession could be explained by a simple SST-MLD diagram similar to Pingree S-kh diagram with sea surface temperature as indicator of stratification (S) and mixed layer depth as indicator of light availability (kh).

  • The effects of environmental forcing on autotrophic picoplankton distributional patterns were investigated for convergence ($5^{\circ}N$), divergence ($9^{\circ}N-10^{\circ}30'N$) and oligotrophic ($17^{\circ}N$) sites in the tropical eastern Pacific during 2001 and 2003 KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) cruises. The distributions of picoplankton populations - Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes algae - were determined by flow cytometric analyses. Latitudinal variations in abundance maxima, vertical profiles, integrated abundance (0-150 m), and estimated carbon biomass were contrasted for each site according to three hydrological conditions. Prochlorococcus showed consistently high abundance in the surface mixed layers of all sites at $1\;{\times}\;10^5{\sim}3\;{\times}\;10^5\;cells\;ml^{-1}$ and showed declining abundance below these layers. However, these decreasing rates were not particularly sharp showing considerably high abundance at $1\;{\times}\;10^4\;cells\;ml^{-1}$ or higher even at 100 m depth. Vertical profiles of Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes were generally parallel to each other in all sites. A clear abundance maximum was observed at divergence site at or slightly above the pycnocline depth. Higher abundance was observed at the surface mixed layer for convergence site but a sharp decrease was observed below the pycnocline. However, there was no significant abundance fluctuation with depth at more oligotrophic site ($17^{\circ}N$). Integrated cell abundance of Prochlorococcus was high in the oligotrophic site at $2.17\;{\times}\;10^{13}\;m^{-2}$, and low in the convergence site at $0.88\;{\times}\;10^{13}\;m^{-2}$. However, opposite pattern was observed for Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes where relatively high integrated cell abundance was shown in the convergence site. Estimated carbon biomass of Prochlorococcus contributed 30.4-80.3% of total autotrophic picoplankton carbon showing the highest contribution in the oligotrophic site and the lowest contribution in the convergence site. Synechococcus contribution of total autotrophic picoplantkon carbon biomass was lower than 5.8% for most of sites except the convergence site where Synechococcus contributed 23.2% of picoplankton carbon biomass. Carbon biomass of picoeukaryotes was 18.8-46.4% showing the highest carbon biomass at the convergence site. Overall, Prochlorococcus showed higher cell abundance and carbon biomass and exhibited different reaction to hydrological conditions when compare with the other two major autotrophic picoplankton groups.

  • The variations of D.O and pH due to the inflow of seawater by sluice gates operation were observed in the Lake Shihwa, Korea. The distributions of D.O and pH were investigated at 11 stations during Feburary 1997 to July 1998. The concentration of D.O before gate operation was 10 mg/l or more all over the watershed, yet 5 mg/l or less in the water layers of 11 m or below from March to June 1997. Anoxic layer appeared in June 1997 and expanded during rainy season. The anoxic layer in the lake depleted the oxygen in seawater as seawater was inflowed. It may be interpreted that the phenomenon comes from the contact of seawater to lower fresh water. The contact of seawater in pH 7.8 to 8.2 to lower water less than pH 7.4 enhanced to oxidize. After January 1998, D.O of the lake increased over 10 mg/l and the stratification was weakened. As a result, it may be concluded that the best way to improve the water qualities is to increase the amount of seawater inflow and outflow so as not to be generated pycnocline in summer.
