  • As for the practical purpose of mathematics education, the extrinsic purpose is emphasized. As an alternative to this, a discussion on mathematics education as a character education is urgently requested. It can be said that the main purpose of learning mathematics is to have a form of life that values the form and structure of mathematics. The epistemological basis of such an idea can be seen as based on Kant's philosophy. Kant's epistemology can provide one answer to the question of the intrinsic purpose of mathematics education.

  • The integration of mathematics education is required Fundamentally discussion about the nature and purpose of mathematics education. After the theoretical discussion of that, Practical approach of that can be correctly realized. However, It is the impression that theoretical discussions and practical action about the current discourse about integration in mathematics education are the wrong order. To understand the practical action for the integrated approach in mathematics education, theoretical discussion of the integrated approach of mathematical education is properly required.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether mathematics education course can improve secondary pre-service math teacher' belief and correlation on pre-service math teacher' belief and mathematics education achievement. In order to achieve this purpose, the test was conducted to the subject of 34 pre-service secondary math teachers of the grade 2 and grade 4 who were chosen from H university in D city and we analyzed the results. Findings on this study are as follows. First, there was meaningful difference in the pre-service math teacher' belief with significant level of 0.05. This proved that mathematics education course was effective on improving pre-service math teacher' belief. Second, there was not meaningful correlation in the pre-service math teacher' belief and mathematics education achievement.

  • Character education is an important educational purpose in the current situation of secondary mathematics education. In the current mathematics curriculum, character education is mentioned in terms of core competencies. However, it is very difficult to concretely practice character education in secondary mathematics education. This paper examines the theoretical background of character education in the tradition of mathematics education, and suggests that mathematics is regarded as a practical tradition by the nature of mathematics from a value-intrinsic perspective. In this respect, mathematics education is defined as an intrinsic and nurturing character through long history of practice. This paper searched for an integrated approach to practicing character education in of secondary mathematics education, and argued that the teacher's personal approach including the class model approach of the human factors by an example of the exponential law aman = am+n and the value-oriented activities according to the nature of the mathematics was the core.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze effects of the mathematics integrated career education on students' affective characteristics. For this purpose, 3 hours of lesson materials of the mathematics integrated career education were developed and applied to 65 students of the 10th ~11th graders selected in two high schools. After 3 hours of lessons, the following research findings are obtained. Fisrt, it is revealed from the pre-post test of 65 subjects that the mathematics integrated career education can help students improve their mathematical attitude and belief. Second, it is shown from the interview with 4 students that they became not only to recognize the usefulness and value of mathematics, but also got changed their self-concept for mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends of domestic research on mathematics teacher education in terms of the period, topics, methods, subjects, and mathematics content strands. For this purpose, a total of 220 research articles dealing with mathematics teacher education were analyzed, which have been published since 2000 by the Korean Society of Mathematics Education in the three journals: (a) The Mathematical Education; (b) Education of Primary School Mathematics; and (c) Communications of Mathematical Education. Regarding the period when the research was conducted, the number of articles on mathematics teacher education has been rapidly increased since the late 2000s. Regarding the topics, research on teacher orientation has been the most frequent topic and the studies dealing with professional development for teachers, teaching practices, or teacher knowledge tend to be popular. Regarding methods, survey and case study have been most frequently employed in studying mathematics teacher education. Regarding subjects, the main participants were in-service teachers, pre-service teachers, elementary school teachers, and secondary school teachers, respectively, who were in charge of a regular class. Finally, regarding mathematics content strands, previous studies on mathematics teacher education were not specific to mathematics content strands. Given these results, this paper closes with important implications for future research directions on mathematics teacher education in Korea.

  • The aims of this study are to identify Dewey's theory on mathematics education and to clarify its influence on the modern theories of mathematics education. For this purpose, we have examined Dewey's theory of knowledge named as pragmatism or instrumentalism, and studied the Dewey's theory of education in which he maintained education is the reconstruction of experiences. And then, we have examined Dewey's theory on mathematics education, such as theory of mathematics, purpose of mathematics education, contents of mathematics education, and methods of mathematics education respectively. After that, we have analyzed how his theory on mathematics education is connected with the diverse theories of modern mathematics education, such as Piaget's operational constructivism, Freudenthal's theory of realistic mathematics education, Polya's theory on mathematical problem-solving, and social constructivism. Through this study, we might say that Dewey's theory on mathematics education is a prototype of modern theories of mathematics education and a comprehensive paradigm which is very suggestive to the phenomena of mathematics education.

  • This study is a literature research on critical mathematics education. In this study, we analyzed the literature about critical theory and critical education, especially focused on Freire's educational works. And also, we reviewed studies and lesson examples about critical mathematics education. The purpose of this research is to improve understanding about critical mathematics education. We found the connection between the goals, teaching methods and contents of critical mathematics education and Freire's theory of critical pedagogy. Critical mathematics lessons stimulated student's sense of social agency and induced student's inquiry. Critical mathematics education has a merit on aspect of mathematical connection and communication by adopting social issues and student's discussion in mathematics lessons. Although there are many obstacles to overcome, critical mathematics education is one of the educational direction to seek.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching/learning model for the mathematical enculturation of elementary and secondary school students. It is clear that the development of teaching and learning in the classroom is essential for the realization of global innovations in mathematics education. Research questions for this purpose are as follow: (1) What can be learned from literatures reviews of the socio-cultural perspective on mathematics education, and of ethnomathematics as a mathematics intrinsic to cultural activities? (2) What is the direction of teaching and learning from the perspective of mathematical enculturation? (3) What is the teaching /learning model for mathematical enculturation? (4) What is the instructional exemplification based on the developed model? This study promotes the establishment of mathematics education theory from the review of literatures on the socio-cultural perspective, the development of a teaching/learning model, and the instructional exemplification based on the developed model.
