  • Numerical analysis of vertical solidification process allowing solid-liquid density change is performed by a hybrid method between a winite volume method (FVM) and a finite element method (FEM). The investigation focuses on the influence of solid-liquid density change and cooling rates on the motion of solid-liquid interface, solidified mass fraction, temperatures and thermal stresses in the solid region. Due to the density change of pure aluminium, solid-liquid interface moves more slowly but the solidified mass fraction is larger. The cooling rate of the wall is shown to have a significant influence on the phase change heat transfer and thermal stresses, while the density change has a small influence on the motion of the interface, solidified mass fraction, temperature distributions and thermal stresses. As the cooling rate increases, the thermal stresses become higher at the early stage of a solidification process, but it has small influence on the final stresses as the steady state is reached.

  • The Townsend discharge domain is generally observed with stable positive characteristics in N$_{2}$ gas discharge at low pressures differently in the others, which transfer immediately to glow dischage after self-sustaining discharge starts. In this paper, the presence of the stable Townsend discharge, applied voltage-discharge current characteristics and the effect of disgased electrode surface on stable townsend discharge are studied experimentaly in N$_{2}$ gas mixed with 0.05% of No in volume. As the result of this experiment, the stable Townssend discharge is observed only in pure nitrogen with the valve of pd.geq.8[torr.cm] (p=gas pressure, d=gap spacing), but not in gas mixtures. This is considered that No gas in gas mixtures disexcites effectively the metestble state of nitrogen.

  • The least informative (favorable) distributions, minimizing Fisher information for a multivariate location parameter, are derived in the parametric class of the exponential-power spherically symmetric distributions under the following characterizing restrictions; (i) a bounded variance, (ii) a bounded value of a density at the center of symmetry, and (iii) the intersection of these restrictions. In the first two cases, (i) and (ii) respectively, the least informative distributions are the Gaussian and Laplace, respectively. In the latter case (iii) the optimal solution has three branches, with relatively small variances it is the Gaussian, them with intermediate variances. The corresponding robust minimax M-estimators of location are given by the $L_2$-norm, the $L_1$-norm and the $L_{p}$ -norm methods. The properties of the proposed estimators and their adaptive versions ar studied in asymptotics and on finite samples by Monte Carlo.

  • The series of experiments have been performed to study the transient heat transfer in air from a suddenly heated vertical thin wire. A platinum wire has been used as a resistance thermometer as well as a heating element to eliminate the disturbances in the measurements. The measured temperature as a function of time is compared with the calculated transient temperature with the aid of a pure conduction equation. The overshoot phenomena in terms of the Nusselt numbers have been detected and it is reasonable to define the delay time at which the onset of convection heat transfer occurs. The measured data are compared with the existing steady-state data and the agreements are reasonable within the comparable ranges.

  • Let X be a space and $2^X$(C(X);K(X);$C_K$(X)) denote the hyperspace of nonempty closed subsets(connected closed subsets, compact subsets, subcontinua) of X with the Vietoris topology. We investigate the relationships between the space X and its hyperspaces concerning the properties of connectedness im kleinen. We obtained the following : Let X be a locally compact Hausdorff space. Let $x{\in}X$. Then the following statements are equivalent: (1) X is connected im kleinen at $x$. (2) $2^X$ is arcwise connected im kleinen at {$x$}. (3) K(X) is arcwise connected im kleinen at {$x$}. (4) $C_K$(X) is arcwise connected im kleinen at {$x$}. (5) C(X) is arcwise connected im kleinen at {$x$}.

  • In this paper, we analyze an M / M / 1 queueing system where there are incentive conflicts among customers. Self-interested customers' decisions whether to join the system or not may not necessarily induce a socially optimal congestion level. As a way to alleviate the over-congestion, toll imposition was used in Naor's paper [3]. Instead of using a toll mechanism, we study the usefulness of imperfect information on system state (queue size, for example) as a way to reduce the over-congestion by self-interested customers. The main conclusion of this paper is that by purposefully giving fuzzy or imperfect information on the current queue size we can improve the congestion in the system. This result might look contradictory to rough intuition since perfect information should give better performance than imperfect information. We show how this idea is verified. In deriving this result, we use the concept of Nash equilibrium (pure and mixed strategy) as introduced in game theory. In some real situations, using imperfect information is easier to apply than imposing a toll, and thus the result of this paper has practical implications.

  • Structure-II hydrate has been highlighted due to its higher gas storage capacity and favorable thermodynamic conditions. In this study, we introduce a new structure-II hydrate former, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and confirm the structural characteristics through High-Resolution Powder Diffraction (HRPD), $^{13}C$ solide-state NMR and Ramanspectroscopy. Here,we also investigated the thermodynamic stability of binary(TBHP+gaseous) clathrate hydrates. The experimental data were generated using an isochoric pressure-search method. The dissociation data for (TBHP +gaseous) clathrate hydrates are compared with the other hydrocarbon hydrate and pure gaseous hydrate.

  • Molecular behaviors and crystal structures of the binary hydrates of $CH_4$ and ethanol were identified by means of 13C solid-state NMR and powder XRD methods at various concentrations of ethanol. In addition, NMR peak areas were used to calculate cage occupancies for both guest species. Obtained results showed that more $CH_4$ molecules are captured into hydrate phase per unit mass of ethanol molecules because $CH_4$ molecule can occupy sII large cages more, and pure $CH_4$ hydrate can form more as well at lower ethanol concentrations. Even though tuning phenomenon was already reported for some aqueous hydrate promoters such as THF, aqueous ethanol solutions are found to play the same tuning role in the binary clathrate hydrates in this study.

  • In this paper, an actively controlled aerostatic bearing is studied to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficients. The actively controlled aerostatic bearing is composed of aerostatic bearings, non-contact type of displacement sensors, piezoelectric actuators and controllers. The cylindrical capacitance sensor (CCS) is used as the displacement sensor. The reason for using CCS instead of the commercial gap sensor is that it can give us the pure error motion of the spindle because it removes the roundness error or the geometric errors in the spindle. The controller is designed by the state space equation and quadratic optimal control theory. The characteristic data of the actively controlled aerostatic bearing system in the frequency domain are presented and the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are mentioned. This paper shows the possibility to reduce the motion error up to 6000 rpm.

  • Electrodeionization (EDI), which combines electrodialysis (ED) and conventional ion-exchange (IX), is a mature process which has been applied since more than twenty years on commercial use for the production of ultrapure water (UPW). Eliminating chemical regeneration is the main reason for its commercial success. The increase in acceptance of EDI technology has led to an installation of very large plant as the commercial state of the art that produces $1,500m^3/h$ of water for high pressure steam boiler. More recently, EDI system has found a number of new interesting applications in wastewater treatment, biotechnology industry, and other potential field. Along with further growth and wider applications, the development of stack construction and configuration are also become a concern. In this paper, the principle of EDI process is described and its recent developments, commercial scale, and various applications are pointed out.
