  • Effect of ball milling treatment on the hydrochloric acid leaching performance of black dross was investigated to recover alumina. Ball milling time and speed showed limited effect on the leaching behavior of the alumina in the mechanically dross. Under the optimum mechanical activation condition (for 1h at 700 rpm), the leaching of alumina in hydrochloric acid solution was significantly affected by leaching time and reaction temperature. MgO was completely dissolved in most of the leaching conditions, while a small amount of Ca, Fe, Si and Ti oxides was dissolved. Although 80% of alumina was dissolved, the dissolved minor components such as Ca, Fe, Mg, Si and Ti oxides should be separated to recover pure alumina solution.

  • Sintering and dielectric characteristics of substrates were estimated by mixing rate of alumina and potashborosilicate glass(PBSG) powders. PBSG powders were used 7761(corning code)and alumina powders were used in extra pure rate(99.9%) and had 0.1 ${\mu}$m mean size. After ball milling with organic additives green sheets which were casted by doctor blade machine were sintered at 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1∼3hrs. Microstructure, linear shrinkage and dielectric constant of substrates were surveyed in order to fabricate low-dielectric and low tem-perature sintering substrate.

  • Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.

  • The recovery of three ethyl esters (aroma model compounds; ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate. ethyl butyrate) from aqueous solutions was studied for vapor permeation with surface-modified hydrophobic alumina membrane, Although the driving force of ethyl butyrate is the highest, the ethyl butyrate concentration in permeate is lower than those of propionate and acetate. Since the solubility of aroma compounds for water is very low, phase separation occurred in permeate, and we could obtain pure ethyl esters. The experimental results showed that the porous hydrophobic alumina membrane had high selectivity and permeation flux on the ester-model compounds.

  • The processing and characterization of ceramic nanocomposites, which produce bulk nanostructures with attractive mechanical properties, have been emphasized and introduced at Prof. Mukherjee's Lab at UC Davis. The following subjects will be introduced in detail in Part II, III, and IV. In Part II, the paper will describe a three-phase alumina-based nanoceramic composite demonstrating superplasticity at a surprisingly lower temperature and higher strain rate. The next part will show that an alumina-carbon nanotube-niobium nanocomposite produced fracture toughness values that are three times higher than that of pure nanocrystalline alumina. It was possible to take advantage of both fiber-toughening and ductile-metal toughening in this investigation. In the fourth section, discussed will be a silicon-nitride/silicon-carbide nanocomposite, produced by pyrolysis of liquid polymer precursors, demonstrating one of the lowest creep rates reported so far in ceramics at the comparable temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$. This was first achieved by avoiding the oxynitride glass phase at the intergrain boundaries. One important factor in the processing of these nanocomposites was the use of the electrical field assisted sintering method. This allowed the sintering to be completed at significantly lower temperatures and during much shorter times. These improvements in mechanical properties will be discussed in the context of the results from the microstructural investigations.

  • The characteristics of boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) behavior of nano-fluids were studied by using various sized silver and alumina nanoparticles. The diameter of nanoparticles was from 2 nm to 250 nm for silver and from 20nm to 40nm for alumina. Pool boiling characteristics and CHF enhancement of nano-fluids with different sized nanoparticles were compared with those of pure water and each nano-fluids. The experiment was performed at atmospheric pressure and the temperature of the pool was maintained constantly by using a flat immersed heater. The concentration of nano-fluids was uniform in all experiments as 0.01g/liter. The results showed that the measured boiling curves were shifted to the right. It demonstrated that the occurrence of nucleate boiling regime in nano-fluids retarded, compared with that of pure water. Also, in nano-fluids, the boiling curves showed that CHF of nano-fluids is significantly enhanced and represented the effect of particle size on boiling characteristics.

  • In order to recover pure alumina from balck dross, precipiatation experiments were done to the NaOH leaching solution of mechanically activated black dross. In this work, hydrogen peroxide was added to the synthic solution as a precipitating agent. Among some variables, the concentration of $H_2O_2$ and the volume ratio of $H_2O_2$ to solution showed a remarkable effect on the precipitation of aluminum hydroxide. At the optimum conditions, most of the aluminate was precipitated. Calcination of the aluminum hydroxide at $1200^{\circ}C$ led to the formation of ${\theta}$ and ${\alpha}$-alumina. The charactistics of the synthesized activated alumina was measured by XRD and EDS. The average particles size of the alumina was $3.73{\mu}m$.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the relation between surface acidity and interfacial electrical characteristics of surface-treated ${\gamma}-alumina$ whose surface activity was increased. The points of zero charge (P. Z. C.) of ${\gamma}-alumina$ whose surface is treated with the sulfuric, nitric and hydro-chloric acid of various concentration were measured from the site-binding theory and mass transport method. The surface active sites were measured by amine titration method and Hammett indicator method. The interfacial properties at alumina/KCl(aq) interface were measured by potentiometric titration. From the experimental results, the following results were obtained. Pure ${\gamma}-alumina$ surface acidity decreases with the increase of calcination temperature at strength $H_o{\leq}+9.3$ Surface-treated alumina acidic properties increase with the anion loading on alumina surface. The surface ionization constants decrease with anion loading on alumina surface, then P. Z. C. decreases with acid amount on alumina surface. Acid amount of surface treated alumina can be correlated with surface charge density at strength $H_o{\leq}+4.8$ as follows. $SO_4^2-/Al_2O_3:Q_A=-0.172ln(0.0418{\sigma}+1.448)$ $NO_3^-/Al_2O_3:Q_A=-0.024{\sigma}-0.0189$ $Cl^-/Al_2O_3:Q_A=-0.01{\sigma}-0.2006$.

  • Electrical properties such as tracking resistance, dielectric constant, $tan\delta$, and volume resistivity, and mechanical properties such as tensile, and strength, and % elongation were measured with the alumina trihydrate filled with EPDM. The results were dicussed in terms of the effect of hydroxyl group. The test results show that the tracking resistance of EPDM improves with the increase in ATH content, whereas volume resistivity, dielectric constant, $tan\delta$ decrease wi th increasing ATH content due to polar nature of ATH. In the charge accumulation characteristics, the homocharge is formed in pure EPDM, and as the ATH content increases in the EPDM compound, the amount of homocharge decrease.

  • Modified mordenites by HF treatement, which have different $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio, and those mixed with $\gamma$-alumina are prepared and used for catalytic cracking of triphenylmethane(TPM) in micro-activity tester(MAT). Dealumination of mordenites decreased the acid content but developed secondary mesopores. The conversion and the selectivity of benzene over modified mordenites with the mesopores were increased. However, for the further dealuminated mordenites, they decreased due to the destruction of pore structure and low acid amount. Accordingly, the maximum cracking activity and the maximum selectivity of benzene were obtained about 17 $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio of modified mordenites. The modified mordenites mixed with alumina enhanced the cracking activity of TPM compared with the pure mordenites. It can be explained that TPM is cracked at active sites with in large pores of alumina firstly and further cracked into small molecules in zeolite pores as step mechanism of catalytic cracking.
