  • The development of a fast, accurate, and inexpensive position-controlled pneumatic actuator that may be applied to various practical positioning applications with various external loads is described in this paper. A novel modified pulse-width modulation (MPWM) valve pulsing algorithm allows on/off solenoid valves to be used in place of costly servo valves. A comparison between the system response of the standard PWM technique and that of the modified PWM technique shows that the performance of the proposed technique was significantly increased. A state-feedback controller with position, velocity and acceleration feedback was successfully implemented as a continuous controller. A switching algorithm for control parameters using a learning vector quantization neural network (LVQNN) has newly proposed, which classifies the external load of the pneumatic actuator. The effectiveness of this proposed control algorithm with smooth switching control has been demonstrated through experiments with various external loads.

  • This paper is concerned with effective operating method of pneumatic on-off valves for improving position control accuracy, valve life-time and position settling time using modified pulse width modulation with dead-zone (MPWMD). The pneumatic system using on-off valves has advantage of simple construction and low cost compared with a system with servo-valves. The performance of the proposed control method is investigated experimentally for the position control of a pneumatic cylinder using on-off valves. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm for valve operation can be used to obtain fast and accurate position control compared to the conventional PWMD algorithm. It is also shown that the use of the proposed MPWMD algorithm for the position control significantly reduces the number of valve switching and noise.

  • The characteristics of optimum control for the second order P.W.M. sampled-data system with linear plants are investigated, with the development of method for finding the cannonical represetations for the initial states, as well as the optimality of modulator output for the P.W.M. system, which contains the electro-mechanical components, by dividing the phase plane into several regions, in which the position of the system in the phase plane are converted into the pulse polarity and pulse width.

  • In this paper, characteristics of blushless direct current (BLDC) motor including core loss are analyzed considering pulse width modulation (PWM) of inverter. Input voltage of BLDC motor due to PWM is calculated considering duty ratio and carrier frequency of inverter in order to control torque or speed of BLDC motor. For the calculation of core loss, the input current with harmonics due to PWM voltage is calculated by using equivalent circuit model of BLDC motor according to switching pattern and carrier frequency. Next, core loss is analyzed by inputting the currents as a source of BLDC motor for FEM. Characteristics including core loss are compared with ones without PWM waveform according to reference speed.

  • MM(multimode) PWM(pulse width modulation) Suitable for high performance and harmonic effects minimization of VSI (voltabge source invertetr)-IM (induction motor)drive system is proposed. The approximated optimal, suboptimal and optimal PWM are implemented in the low frequency range, while square wave operation is realized in the hibh frequency range. The pulse width Modulator is capable of generating control signals to a transistorized inverter operating at about 1KHz. All functions except digital comparison have been implemented in softyware making the scheme economical, flexible and reliable. Pulse width modulator is built and tested experimentally. In order to confirm the effectiveness and the reliability of the theoretical proposition, this scheme is applied to 1Hp, Three phase IM. As results, it is concluded that the scheme of MM PWM is superior to other conventional switching scheme through the discussions or analysis carried out on the items such as line-to-line voltage, current and spectrum of current harmonic components observed at the output terminal of inverter, noise level of motor.

  • This paper presents a loss analysis and compares three pulse width modulation (PWM) methods applied in a three-phase grid-connected bidirectional inverter for an energy storage system. The losses in switching devices and output low pass filters are theoretically analyzed by using PWM control techniques. Grid-connected bidirectional inverters are designed by using PWM techniques, and the designed inverters are simulated to verify the analysis results.

  • In order to control the output voltage in a dual active bridge converter, this paper establishes a theoretical inductor current equation for a dual-pulse-width-modulation scheme that ensures low switching loss. It also proposes a modulation strategy that minimizes conduction loss. When compared to the conventional single-pulse-width-modulation strategy, the proposed approach can reduce the inductor current RMS and improve efficiency in the low power region, as verified through simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper discusses an intelligent digital redesign technique for designing a fuzzy pulse-width-modulated (PWM) control. First when we are given a well-designed fuzzy analog control, the equivalent digital control is intelligently redesigned. Using the similar technique we intelligently redesign the fuzzy PWM control from the intelligently redesigned fuzzy digital control. A stabilizability of the intelligently redesigned PWM control is rigorously analyzed.

  • This paper presents a model for p voltage controlled pulse width modulator (VCPWM), which can be used in any phase controlled converter having either manual or microprocessor based control. The circuit uses only one 555 timer, an OpAmp, some resistors, and capacitors. Although a large varieties of such circuits are available in the literature, this model is very simple with low cost and high performance.
