We propose to implement cost-effectively a high-speed short-haul interconnect by transmitting a 200-Gb/s/λ two-channel optical time-division-multiplexed signal generated by a carrier-suppressed optical pulse, which improves the robustness of the multiplexed signal to chromatic dispersion. The multiplexed 200-Gb/s signal is generated in the transmitter by combining two 100-Gb/s 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulated signals (generated using the optical pulse and two Mach-Zehnder modulators). After the signal is transmitted over a fiber, it is amplified by a semiconductor optical amplifier and detected by a photodiode. The amplified spontaneous emission noise is eliminated by an optical band-pass filter. The transmitted signal is reconstructed by a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output equalizer, which compensates for crosstalk. Due to the use of the carrier-suppressed optical pulse, the 200-Gb/s signal can be transmitted over fiber with a chromatic dispersion of 40 ps/nm.

Using chlorophyll fluorescence, the vertical migration of benthic diatoms responding to light intensity and affected by sediment grain size was studied. Minimal fluorescence ($F_o$) of surface sediment was measured by imaging pulse amplitude modulated (Imaging-PAM) fluorometer, and used to monitor diatom biomass variation in surface sediments. The test diatoms, Amphora coffeaeformis (C. Agardh) K$\ddot{u}$tzing and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reimann & Lewin, migrated to the sediment surface under irradiance from 50 to 500 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. However, the diatoms exhibited no evident increase of surface biomass under dark conditions, and even showed slightly decrease of surface biomass under irradiances over 1,000 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. The light intensity inducing the maximum surface migration of A. coffeaeformis was 100 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, while the light intensity producing the same effect for C. closterium was 250 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. C. closterium showed higher motility than A. coffeaeformis. Faster diatom surfacing was observed in larger grain size sediments (125-335 ${\mu}m$) than smaller ones (63-125 ${\mu}m$). This study confirmed the significant influence of light as a main triggering factor behind migration, indicated the distinct effect of different sediment grain size, and highlighted the species-specific migratory ability.
A new laser diode range-finding speedometer is proposed, which is modulated by a pair of positive and negative triangular pulse current superimposed on a dc current. Since a target velocity is directly obtained form a pure Doppler beat frequency measured during the non-modulation period, the new sensor is free from the difficulties due to the critical velocity encountered in the previous sensor. Furthermore, the different amplitude of the two triangular pluses are so adjusted that the measurable range using only one laser head is greatly expanded to 10cm through 150cm, which is about two times that of the previous sensor. The measurement accuracy for velocity of .+-.6mm/s through .+-.20mm/s and for range is about 1%, and 2%, respectively. Because the new sensor can be operated automatically using a microcomputer, it will be useful for application of a 3-D range image measurement of a slowly moving object.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether percutaneous interferential current stimulation on thoracic sympathetic ganglia with amplitude modulated frequency (AMF) $90\~100$ bps and subthreshold of muscle contraction for 10 minutes on peripheral blood flow velocity in healthy subjects. Thirty-seven healthy volunteers were assigned randomly into an experimental group (n=25) and a control group (n=12). the experimental group received interferential current stimulation with subthreshold of the muscle contraction of current at AMF $90\~100$ bps on $1st\~5th$ thoracic sympathetic ganglial region for 10 minutes. The control group received same handling and electode placement, but no current was applied. Using a Doppler blood flow meter, the radial arterial blood flow velocities and the pulse raters were determined for two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures on time and group. There were no significant difference between the two groups with respect to the changes in arterial blood flow velocity and pulse rate over the four measurement times. Interferential current stimulation did not change in mean blood flow velocity and pulse rate. We conclude that interferential current stimulation on the thoracic sympathetic ganglia, as used in this study, did not dilate peripheral artery. This results suggests that interferential current stimulation dose not alter the activtiy of sympathetic nerve.
We propose a pseudo optical N-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PO PAM-N) signal using a few externally-modulated lasers (EMLs) operating at different wavelengths, which is suitable for upgrading the transmission speed over an optical link of < 10 km single-mode fiber with low-cost components. To compare a PO PAM-N signal with that of a standard optical PAM-N signal, we perform experiments for evaluating the performance of a 51.56-Gb/s PO PAM-4 signal and standard 51.56-Gb/s optical PAM-4 signal. The receiver sensitivity (at $BER=10^{-5}$) of the PO PAM-4 signal is 1.5 dB better than the receiver sensitivity of a standard optical PAM-4 signal. We also investigate the feasibility of PO PAM-N (N = 4, 8, and 16) signals operating at 103.12 Gb/s, considering relative intensity noise, timing jitter, extinction ratio (ER) of EMLs, and dispersion. From the results, a PO PAM-8 signal performs better than PO PAM-4 and PO PAM-16 signals at 103.12 Gb/s. Finally, we suggest a timing control method to suppress the effect of dispersion in a PO PAM-N signal. We show that the tolerance to dispersion of a 103.12-Gb/s PO PAM-8 signal can be improved to ${\pm}40ps/nm$ by applying a proposed scheme.
A retinal prosthesis is being developed for the restoration of vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Determining optimal electrical stimulation parameters for the prosthesis is one of the most important elements for the development of a viable retinal prosthesis. Here, we investigated the effects of different charge-balanced biphasic pulses with regard to their effectiveness in evoking retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses. Retinal degeneration (rd1) mice were used (n=17). From the ex-vivo retinal preparation, retinal patches were placed ganglion cell layer down onto an $8{\times}8$ multielectrode array (MEA) and RGC responses were recorded while applying electrical stimuli. For asymmetric pulses, 1st phase of the pulse is the same with symmetric pulse but the amplitude of 2nd phase of the pulse is less than $10{\mu}A$ and charge balanced condition is satisfied by lengthening the duration of the pulse. For intensities (or duration) modulation, duration (or amplitude) of the pulse was fixed to $500{\mu}s$($30{\mu}A$), changing the intensities (or duration) from 2 to $60{\mu}A$(60 to $1000{\mu}s$). RGCs were classified as response-positive when PSTH showed multiple (3~4) peaks within 400 ms post stimulus and the number of spikes was at least 30% more than that for the immediate pre-stimulus 400 ms period. RGC responses were well modulated both with anodic and cathodic phase-1st biphasic pulses. Cathodic phase-1st pulses produced significantly better modulation of RGC activity than anodic phase-1st pulses regardless of symmetry of the pulse.
In this paper, the effects of the interference environments on the performance of the time hopping(TH) binary PPM impulse radio(IR) system are presented. Based on the monocycle pulse available within the frequency of 3.1~10.6 GHz permitted for application by FCC, a PPM-modulated TH IR system simulator was designed and followed by the analysis of the monocycle pulse characteristics as well as the system performance. Particularly for the evaluation of the system performance, the multiple access interference and the narrowband system interference signals were considered as the interference signals. Since the narrowband system interference signal has very narrow bandwidth and very large amplitude compared with those of IR system, the analysis of the IR system performance was implemented by considering the interference power and band fraction ratio of the narrowband interference signal.

In this research, We derived Recursive Least Squares(RLS) algorithm with adaptive maximum-likelihood channel estimate for digital pulse amplitude modulated sequence in the presence of intersymbol interference and additive white Gaussian noise. RLS algorithms have better convergence characteristics than conventional algorithms, LMS (Least Mean Squares) algorithms.
This study was conducted with using chlorophyll a fluorescence (indicated as photosynthetic activity) to examine the toxic effect of 96 h exposure of heavy metals and herbicides on the benthic diatom Nitzschia sp. which was isolated from pristine sediment in Pamquat Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. Samples of benthic diatom were exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg L–1 of copper, 0, 1, 10 and 100 mg L–1 of chrome (VI), 0, 2.45, 24.5 and 245 mg L–1 of paraquat dichloride, and 0, 4.37, 43.7 and 437 mg L–1 of alachlor during 96 hours. The effective quantum yield of photochemistry (ΔF/Fm’) was evaluated by subjecting light acclimated samples to saturating pulses of light using a pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. The impact of heavy metals on Nitzschia sp. photosynthesis was not severe in < 1 mg L–1 but in the high concentrations (> 1 mg L–1) clearly increased toxic stress during 96 h. Herbicides had a limited impact during the exposure period but clearly increased stress on the benthic diatom with increasing concentrations. Acute response of Nitzschia sp. to selected heavy metals and herbicides was characterized, and the capacity of a benthic diatom to tolerate and recover from toxic stress was assessed.
In order to restore the gait function by functional electrical stimulation(FES) in hemiplegic patients, an electrical stimulator and foot sensor were developed on the basis of optimal parameters which resulted from animal experiments. Physical properties of the soleus muscle were quite different from those of themedial gastrocnemius muscle, that is, the former had a characteristic or slow muscle and the letter had a characteristic of fast muscle in rats. Optimal parameters for electrical stimulation were 0.2ms of pulse width and 20Hz of frequency in the soleus muscle and 0.3ms, 40Hz in the medial gastrocnemius muscle. Amplitude modulated electrical stimulator with -15V of maximal output was made and automatic on-off time if the stimulator was 5 seconds. The foot sensor composed of 3 sensors in 3 pressure points of the foot was made in order to control the gai t function by closed loop feedback system. The gait function was improved by using the stimulator and foot sensor in peroneal palsy. These results suggest that the electrical stimulator with closed loop feedback system may restore the gait function in hemiplegic patients.
