Pulp and paper industry is a typical plant industry which usually consume lots of water and energy. Recently, environmental issues have become more important due to climate changes around the world, and reinforcement in the regulatory content in transfer and management of chemical material and that in environmental regulations for waste water and air. Paper industry is a source material recycle industry which recycle or reuse waste paper, recyclable wood, planned plantation or lumber from thinning and waste wood. Hence it can be said that paper industry is the representative industry for earth environment and of 21th century.

Properties of newly developed paper from Red Algae Pulp (RAP) were examined. The paper samples were prepared by mixing RAP fiber with wood fibers, HwBKP and SwBKP, to form a paper with $60g/m^2$ in weight. It was prepared in three to four different levels of refining degree and pressure so that it can reveal different bulk level in order to clearly compare the opacity at equivalent bulk for each furnish compositions. Printability of RAP fiber revealed superior effect on print through repression and initial ink absorption. Those properties are expected to improve further if printability improvement effect due to smoothness improvement is added.
Strawberry pulp was separated into serum and Insoluble pulp by centrifugation. The serum was concentrated in vacuo at 55~58$^{\circ}C$ and 10% aroma recovered. Two folds concentrated strawberry pulp was prepared by mixing concentrated serum, aroma fraction and Insoluble pulp. To develop aroma-rich jam, the strawberry jam was prepared by filling mixture of concentrated pulp, sucrose, citric acid and pectin into retortable pouches and by heating them after heat-seating. The color and flavor quality of the jam prepared by new method were better than the jam prepared by conventional method, as Indicated by GC, GC/MS data, surface color and anthocyanin contents. These results were confirmed by the sensory evaluations. Flavor off-flavor, color intensity and overall acceptance were superior to the conventional method.

It is well known that the recycling of pulp generates a lot of fines, and cause the hornification of fiber. Both phenomena have been contributed to a limited use of recycled fiber. Among several means which can improve the properties of recycled fiber, enzymatic treatments are considered as an effective means. Thus the effects of xylanase on the properties of recycled pulp were investigated in this study Xylanase treatment showed some refining effect at a small dosage while the fines and fibrils were reduced at higher dosage as shown in the treatment with cellulase-hemicellulase. The interesting finding is that the WRV of recycled fiber treated with xylanase was higher than that treated with the mixture of cellulase and hemicellulase. Breaking length and tear index of recycled fiber treated with xylanase were also higher.

Generally, aging of paper is evaluated by folding endurance and degree of yellowing. It was known as that lignin, hemicellulose and metallic ion affect yellowing of mechanical or chemical pulps. Among these elements, especially, the study of hemicellulose that affect at yellowing of pulp is insufficient. In this study, we examined into the influence that glucuronoxylan or glucomannan and metallic ion($Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},Mn^{2+}$) residued in pulp get each or when mixed at yellowing. Filter paper was treated with each metallic ion, glucuronoxylan and the mixture of glucuronoxylan and metal ions, and brightness and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ was measured after accelerated aging. As the results of measurements, the filter paper processed by 10% glucuronoxylan was dropped 2-3% on the brightness after accelerated aging for 24 hours. Also, the filter paper treated with glucuronoxylan and $Fe^{2+}$ was dropped 7% on the brightness.
The effects of feeding rice bran and beet pulp mixtures on the site and extent of digestion and microbial synthesis in fattening steers were studied. Three Holstein steers fitted with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas were fed four diets in a $4{\times}3$ Youden square design. The four diets consisted of 15% Italian ryegrass hay and 85% concentrate as a control diet which included 72% rolled barley, 20% rice bran plus 40% beet pulp, 30% rice bran plus 30% beet pulp or 40% rice bran plus 20% beet pulp. All diets provided 1.8 times digestible energy required for maintenance. The digestibility of fat in the small intestine (% of flow) showed an increase with rice bran content among the by-product diets. Digestibility of structural carbohydrate both in the rumen and the whole digestive tract decreased linearly with rice bran content. The digestibility of nonstructural carbohydrate was not affected by rice bran content, but that of nonstructural, nonstarch polysaccharides was higher in the rumen and lower in the large intestine for the by-product diets than for the control diet. A rice bran content of more than 30% in the by-product diets severely inhibits ruminal microbial synthesis and digestible energy intake in fattening steers.
The purpose of this study was to observe histopathologically the influence of advanced periodontitis on pulp tissue, and to conclude the correlation between the results with clinical manifestations. The samples were teeth with over 7mm pocket depth and over 50% radiographic bone loss. These were diagnosed to have very poor prognosis and thus planned to be extracted. Those with any of following conditions were excluded from the samples, loss of vitality, periapical pathology, restoration or prosthesis, dental caries, and attrition or abrasion. It was because these conditions could affect pulp without any correlation with periodontal disease. For the experiment, 17 teeth from 11 patients were selected. Average age of patient was 47. Each tooth was examined for following categoris; pocket depth, gingival recession, electric pulp test, mobility, percussion test, sensitivity test. The extracted teeth were fixed buffered neutral formalin solution. It was decalcified using 4% nitric acid. Sliced histological samples observed using light microscope, for pulp status, and severeity of inflammation. 4 samples were excluded due to histologic sample discrepency. Thus 13 samples were subject to observation. 4 showed normal conditions. Focal reversable pulpitis was shown in 5 samples. Chronic pulpitis was observed 1 sample. Pulpal abscess was observed in 3 samples.
The purpose of this study was detection of the poison from the acute cyanide and aresenic poisoned rabbits, The author administered KCN and $AS_2O_3$ to rabbits and caused acute poisoning, then analysed the teeth, dental pulp and jaws of the rabbits chemicotoxicologically and observed the specimen histopathologically. 1. In subcutaneausly injected group of KCN, a large amount of cyanide was detected in blood and lung and a small amount of cyanide was detected in teeth and dental pulp, but was not detected in jaws. 2. In orally administered group of KCN a large amount of cyanide was detected in blood, lung and dental pulp and a small amount of cyanide was detected in teeth and jaws. 3. In orally administered group of $AS_2O_3$, arsenic was detected markedly in teeth and jaws, but was detected a little in dental pulp. 4. In orally administered and heat-treated group of KCN, the author could detected cyanide in teeth, dental pulp and jaws. 5. In suvcutanelusly injected group of KCN, orally administered group of KCN and orally dministered group of $AS_2O_3$, histopathologic findings showed the congestion and hemorrhage in dental pulp. 6. In orally administerd group of $AS_2O_3$, the congestion and hemorrhage in buccal mucosa were found and the basal cell degeneration and fibrosis were found in palatal mucosa.

The base paper of corrugated board is mainly produced from Korean old corrugated container (KOCC), and thus the recycling rate of KOCC is very high. However, there is a problem that the pulp quality is very low while the recycling rate of OCC is high. The fines content in KOCC, the main source of the corrugated board, amounts to nearly the half of the total stock, and its formation increases as recycling process repeats due to the hornification of fiber. There have been attempts to improve the drainage property of OCC by increasing the headbox concentration of the paper machine or by applying drainage-promoting polymer additives. However, these conventional methods have problems of weakened paper strength and lowered converting fitness caused by paper formation hindrance. The strength of linerboard could not be increased in case KOCC is used, because hornified OCC pulp can-not be sufficiently refined due to the lowered drainage property caused by fines formation. We studied about a new technique consisting of froth-flotation for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction. This study will be developed in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of a recycled OCC pulp by selective treatment of flocculant on fractionated OCC Fines.

The bacterial cellulose(BC) has many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. In order to enhance inherently inferior physical property of chemithermomechanical pulp(CTMP) sheet, chemical pulp has been used widely. Bacterial cellulose also has an enhanced sheet strength because of its unique physical and morphological features. This study was carried out to inverstigate the effect of BC addition on physical properties of CTMP sheets. The effect of BC addition on its optical properties was also discussed. The apparent density, internal bond strength, Young's modulus, tensile strength and folding endurance of CTMP sheet are increasing with increase of BC contents. This strength increase would be attributed to the increase of relative bonding sites among pulp fibers by addition of BC which has microfibrillar structure with very high specific surface areas. There were not so significant changes in opacity of CTMP sheet upto 20% addition level of BC, while over 40% addition, the opacity gradually decreased and levelled off. Porosity is decreased with addition of BC. This decrease would be attributed to densification of sheet by fine and filamentous structure of BC fibers.
