  • This paper proposes an isolated bidirectional three-phase push-pull dc-dc converter for high power application such as eco-friendly vehicles, renewable energy systems, energy storage systems, and solid-state transformers. The proposed converter achieves ZVS turn-on of all switches and volume of passive components is small by an effect of three-phase interleaving. The proposed converter has identical switching pattern for both boost and buck mode, and therefore can provide seamless characteristic at the mode transition. A 3kW prototype of the proposed converter has been built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed operation.

  • In this paper, we propose the converged profile and authentication scheme for supporting converged media services of broadcasting & communications convergence in fixed mobile convergence networks. The proposed scheme supports the management of access, service, mobility and IPTV profiles on subscriber and a function of open API(Application Program Interface) for providing the subscriber profile for the third party service provider with the PUSH/PULL method. The open API is based on a web service and a REST(Representational State Transfer) and provides various services for the third party service provider with ease. In addition, the proposed scheme supports a function of SSO(Single Sign-on). After user succeeded in establishing an access connection, user can sustain the same authentication state with this function although connected access network is changed or IMS(IP Multimedia Subsystem) service network is attached. We evaluate and analyze the performance of the proposed scheme through the implementation of CUPS(Converged User Profile Server) system test-bed.

  • Small RNAs (sRNAs) are widespread and play major roles in regulation circuits in bacteria. Previously, we have demonstrated that transcription of esrE is under the control of its own promoter. However, the regulatory elements involved in EsrE sRNA expression are still unknown. In this study, we found that different cis-regulatory elements exist in the promoter region of esrE. We then screened and analyzed seven potential corresponding trans-regulatory elements by using pull-down assays based on DNA affinity chromatography. Among these candidate regulators, we investigated the relationship between the ferric uptake regulator (Fur) and the EsrE sRNA. Electrophoresis mobility shift assays (EMSAs) and β-galactosidase activity assays demonstrated that Fur can bind to the promoter region of esrE, and positively regulate EsrE sRNA expression in the presence of Fe2+.

  • The new technique has been used to determine the soil-reinforcement interaction. The testing apparatus is essentially a triaxial cell fitted with the capability to house a hollow cylinderical sample. A hollow cylinderical sand specimen with a concentrical layer of reinfarcing material sandwitched in the middle is used in this investigation. The reinforcement is fastened at the base. The hollow specimen can be viewed as a "unit sheet" of a soil-reinforcement composite system of infinite horizontal extent. Axial load as well as inner and outer chamber pressures can be applied to perform a test. The specimen is first subjected to an isotropic stress state corresponding to the overburden pressure. Next, an extension test by reducing the axial load is carried out. The specimen is "loaded" to failure by either the breakage of reinforcing material (tensile failure) or slippage which takes place at the soil-reinforcement interface (i.e. the overcoming of the bonding capacity). Since the reinforcement is fastened at its lower end to the base, any tendency of relative movement between the reinforcement and the sand during an extension test can induce tensile force in the reinforcement thus forming a "reversed pull-out" test condition. Preliminary test results have demonstrated positively of the new approach to test the soil-reinforcement interaction. Reinforcing elements of different extensibility were used to study the deformbility of reinforced soil. Furthermore, both the breakage and the pull-out modes of failure were observed.

  • Since low-rise residential buildings are the most common and vulnerable structures in coastal areas, a reliable prediction of their performance under hurricanes is necessary. The present study focuses on developing a refined finite element model that is able to more rigorously represent the load distributions or redistributions when the building behaves as a unit or any portion is overloaded. A typical 5:12 sloped low-rise residential building is chosen as the prototype and analyzed under wind pressures measured in the wind tunnel. The structural connections, including the frame-to-frame connections and sheathing-to-frame connections, are modeled extensively to represent the critical structural details that secure the load paths for the entire building system as well as the boundary conditions provided to the building envelope. The nail withdrawal, the excessive displacement of sheathing, the nail head pull-through, the sheathing in-plane shear, and the nail load-slip are found to be responsible for the building envelope damage. The uses of the nail type with a high withdrawal capacity, a thicker sheathing panel, and an optimized nail edge distance are observed to efficiently enhance the building envelope performance based on the present numerical damage predictions.

  • RPK118 is a sphingosine kinase-1-binding protein that has been implicated in sphingosine 1 phosphate-mediated signaling. It contains a PX (phox homology) domain and two pseudo-kinase domains, and co-localizes with sphingosine kinase-1 on early endosomes. In this study we identified a novel RPK118-binding protein, PRDX3 (peroxiredoxin-3), by yeast two-hybrid screening. The interaction between these proteins was confirmed by pull-down assays and co-immunoprecipitation experiments. Deletion studies showed that RPK118 interacted with PRDX3 through its pseudokinase domains, and with early endosomes through its PX domain. Double immunofluorescence experiments demonstrated that PRDX3 co-localized with RPK118 on early endosomes in COS7 cells. PRDX3 is a member of the antioxidant family of proteins synthesized in the cytoplasm and functioning in mitochondria. Our findings indicate that RPK118 is a PRDX3-binding protein that may be involved in transporting PRDX3 from the cytoplasm to its mitochondrial site of function or to other membrane structures via endosome trafficking.

  • In this paper, simulation results of a robust digital tracking controller on a robotic manipulator are presented. The objective is to follow a ramp reference input with zero steady state error in the presence of a disturbance and system parameter variations. Some of the difficulties are caused by the Coulomb frictions, the disturbance due to the gravitational pull, the spring effect of a link between the drive motor and the manipulator arm. Another difficulty is that, because of the non-differentiable Coulomb friction, the digital control system cannot be represented as a discrete system. It is thus necessary to design the controller based on a discrete-continuous hybrid model. The controller is based on feeding back the state variables and augmenting the system by addition discrete integrators. The feedback gain parameters are obtained by applying the quadratic optimal control theory and then choosing the new weighting matrices to eliminate the limit cycle by using the describing function method for hybrid system.

  • The purpose of this study presents useful data on the choice or development of floor covering from slip viewpoint by examining closely the impact of the changes in sliding experiments due to the wear of floor covering by walk. The result of wear practical test per ten thousand walks enforces some kind of popular floor covering and measure of coefficient of slip resistance as follows: (1) When surface of floor covering is in the state of wet, the degree of wear doesn't affect greatly in slip. (2) When surface of floor covering is in dry and clean state, most floor coverings have the tendency to lower the coefficient of slip resistance with the amount of walk on it. (3) Change in the tendency of slip resistance by wear appeared mainly due to the differences in the state of floor covering and organic floor covering appeared to have great reduction of coefficient of slip resistance than the inorganic ones. (4) According to the result of investigation on changes in tendency of coefficient of slip resistance due to the increase in the number of walk and if two hundred thousand walks were done, regardless of surface shape or kind of site, etc, the safety of floor covering, in slip viewpoint, greatly reduces.

  • This paper presents experimental study of the static and dynamic fracture toughness behavior of a A1-6061 aluminum alloy reinforced alumina( .delta. -A1$_{2}$0$_{3}$) whiskers with 5%, 10%, 15% volume fraction. The static fracture tests using three-point bending specimen were performed by UTM25T. And drop weight impact tester performing dynamic fracture tests was used to measure dynamic locads applied to a fatigue-precracked specimes. The oneset of crack initiation was detected uwing a strain gage bonded near a crack tip. The value of static fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ and dynamic fracture toughness $K_{ID}$ were decided on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The effects of fiber volume fraction and loading on fracture toughness were investigated. The distribution of whiskers, bonding state and fracture interfaces involved in void, fiber pull-out state were investigated by optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)
