Purpose: This study investigated general, psychological, and health-related factors related to subjective health status reported from adolescents in multicultural families. Methods: Data from the seventh Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2001), collected by the Korean Center for Disease Control, was statistically analyzed using the t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple regression analysis. Results: The average points reported for subjective health status was 3.73(SD=0.87)out of 5 points. A major factor accounting for differences in the subjective health status reported was gender. In addition key differences related to psychological and health-related factors were cognition of stress, satisfaction with sleep amount, and moderate physical exercise. Conclusion: The findings suggest that tailored intervention programs should be provided to prevent adolescent problems in multicultural families. We also recommend the development of a program that can help control the variables identified in this study.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the images, knowledge, and stereotypes plus perceptions about the elderly between students in nursing class and those in other classes and to determine the correlation among variables. Methods: The subjects of this study were 400 students, 200 from nursing class and 200 from other classes(premedical students were excluded) from one university. Result: Images the elderly of all participants showed an average score of 2.96(${\pm}0.376$), total average score of knowledge about the elderly was 16.22(${\pm}2.356$), and average score for stereotypes plus perception was 2.92(${\pm}0.394$). Comparison between students in nursing class and those in the other classes showed that students in the nursing class had deeper knowledge regarding physical and physiological fields of the elderly, however they had comparatively negative cognition in the images and stereotypes plus perceptions about the elderly. In addition interest in the elderly and volunteer experiences were significantly affected by the images and stereotypes plus perceptions. Images, knowledge, and stereotypes plus perceptions about the elderly showed significant positive correlation. Conclusion: In development of curriculum related to the elderly in nursing class, development of specific and diverse approaches that will raise positive awareness of the elderly is necessary.
The purpose of this study was to discuss the difference of stress by the grade, examine the relationship between characteristics and main stress, and to investigate the effect of the National Examination of Registered Nurses on stress by using the stress self-rating scale targeting university nursing students (n=314), The stress self-rating scale consists of three subscales: stress responses, stressors and coping parts, such as perceived social support and a sense of humor. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression analysis. The results showed that passing the National Examination of Registered Nurses was the first problem among the stressors. Stressors of the living factors and nursing factors, and subjective stressors of the surveyed nursing students were the highest among the senior students, but stressors of nursing factors increased according to the grade of the nursing students. Perceived stress responses were high in psychological responses of other aspects, and perceived stress responses increased according to the grade (p<.001). Senior students had a high weight of perceived stress responses (problem-focused, emotion-focused). and active and negative coping modes. Significant factors that explained the stressors were coping mode(r=.62-82. p<.01) and cognition(r=.19. p<.01). including the social support. These findings suggest that social support was very important for seniors. and that we have to develop approaches to decrease stress according to the student grade for nursing education process.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the level of health behaviors, perceived health status, emotional and cognitive conditions and depression of the elderly residence in homeless shelters, and to identify related factors on their depression. Method: This was a descriptive study using a questionnaire. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used for examining depression, and other questionnaire were adopted and modified from the customized visiting health care service. Result: The 41 subjects displayed mild depression ($5.34{\pm}3.33$). The majority were non-smokers (73.2%) and non-drinkers (85%), and 81.1% of the subjects did light activities with 74.4 % performing regular exercise more than once per week. Perceived health status was above average in 70.7%, and feeling stress (70.7%), suicidal thoughts (12.2%) and abnomal KDSQ-C (29.3%) were shown in emotional and cognitive conditions. Depression had a significant relationship with regular exercise (t=3.61, p=.001), perceived health status (t=3.47, p=.041) and suicidal thoughts (t=2.85, p=.007). Conclusion: It is necessary to increase shelters for the elderly homeless and construct the system for examining not only their physical health but also their psychological problems, and to ensure long- term care recognizing their unique characteristics and needs, and their increasing number.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to draw practical implications applicable to the field by analyzing a double-mediator model of social participation and depression in relation to the utilization of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and cognitive function. Methods: The data from the Fifth Living Profiles of Older People Survey in Korea was used, and the sample included 3,925 people, 75 years of age or older. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and the PROCESS macro test were used for verification of the double mediator model. Results: The results were as follows: First, ICT utilization was rated at an average of 1.4 out of 10, social participation at an average of 1.1 out of 7, depression at an average of 3.72 out of 15, and cognitive function at an average of 22.42 out of 30. Second, ICT utilization has a significant effect on cognitive function. Third, the mediating effects of social participation between ICT utilization and cognitive function were significant. Fourth, the mediating effects of depression between ICT utilization and cognitive function were not significant. Fifth, the serial double mediator effects leading to ICT utilization, social participation, depression, and cognitive function were significant. Conclusion: The study discussed the implications of maintaining and protecting cognitive function in the vulnerable elderly through the utilization of ICT.
