Psycho-acoustic evaluation of the indoor noise in cabins of a naval vessel using a back-propagation neural network algorithm

  • The indoor noise of a ship is usually determined using the A-weighted sound pressure level. However, in order to better understand this phenomenon, evaluation parameters that more accurately reflect the human sense of hearing are required. To find the level of the satisfaction index of the noise inside a naval vessel such as "Loudness" and "Annoyance", psycho-acoustic evaluation of various sound recordings from the naval vessel was performed in a laboratory. The objective of this paper is to develop a single index of "Loudness" and "Annoyance" for noise inside a naval vessel according to a psycho-acoustic evaluation by using psychological responses such as Noise Rating (NR), Noise Criterion (NC), Room Criterion (RC), Preferred Speech Interference Level (PSIL) and loudness level. Additionally, in order to determine a single index of satisfaction for noise such as "Loudness" and "Annoyance", with respect to a human's sense of hearing, a back-propagation neural network is applied.

  • The noise inside a naval vessel is very important in considering the need for hearing protection, improving the working environment and maintaining good communications for crews living on board a naval vessel. The indoor noise of a ship usually is specified by the A-weighted sound pressure level, but other evaluating parameters are required to reflect human senses more effectively. This paper uses additional noise indices related to room acoustics, such as NR(noise rating), NC(noise criterion), RC(room criterion), PSIL(preferred speech interference level) and loudness level to evaluate the noise inside cabins on a naval vessel. Using these psychological noise indices, allowable limit of noise level in cabins is suggested through psycho-acoustic evaluation for the noise in cabins.

An Experimental Study on the Psycho-acoustic Response to Alarming Sound in a Fire (화재발생시 음향통보장치 신호음의 청감반응에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A fire is occurring increasingly every you and the damage is bigger in proportion to the number. Therefore a fire is classified as a serious calamity. It is important to evacuate and fight a fire by early Perception. However, if the alarming sound is not perceived when a fire breaks out the damage could be expanded. From this point of view, this study aims to analyse the correlation between alarming sound sources and sound quality parameters through psycho-acoustic experiment using Korean vocabularies extracted by existing study. The sound sources more dangerous, tense and urgent were chosen. The results from this study are as follows: 1. airraid, klaxon2 and S.O.S got a point more than conventional alarming sound.2. correlation coefficient between Loudness(L) and Unbiased Annoyance(UA) was highest with 0.63 md Sharpness(S) and Roughness(R) was -0.40 and Fluctuation Strength(FL) and Tonality(T).

DEVELOPMENT OF A SOUND QUALITY INDEX FOR THE EVALUATION OF BOOMING NOISE OF A PASSENGER CAR BASED ON REGRESSIVE CORRELATION

  • This paper proposes a sound quality index to evaluate the vehicle interior noise. The index was developed using a correlation analysis of an objective measurement and a subjective evaluation data. First, the objective set of measurements was obtained at two specified driving conditions. One is from a wide-open test condition and the other is from a constant-speed test condition. At the same time, subjective evaluation was carried out using a score of ten scale where 17 test engineers participated in the experiment. The correlation analysis between the psycho-acoustic parameters derived from the objective measurement and the subjective evaluation was performed. The most critical factors at both test conditions were determined, and the corresponding equations for the sound quality were obtained from the multiple factor regression method. Finally, a comparative work between previous index and present index was performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed index.

Development of an Index for the Evaluation of Intake Booming Noise of a Passenger Car (차량의 흡기부밍소음 평가지수 개발)

  • In this paper, an index for the evaluation of vehicle intake booming noise is developed through a correlation analysis of objective measurement data and subjective evaluation data. First, intake orifice noise is measured at the wide-open test condition. And then, acoustic transfer function between intake orifice noise and interior noise at the steady state condition is estimated. Simultaneously, subjective evaluation was carried out with a ten-scale score by 8 engineers. Next, the correlation analysis between the psycho-acoustic parameters derived from the measured data and the subjective evaluation is performed. The most critical factor was determined and the corresponding index for the intake booming noise is obtained from the multiple factor regression method. At last, the effectiveness of the proposed index is validated.

  • The diffuser noise of HVAC(heating ventilating and air-conditioning) uses dB(A) or NC as a indoor noise criteria that ASHRAE represents, and there is no specific guide line for application. According to the previous study, there are some problems like that even though the sound level of sound source is same, the NC shows different values, which makes the noise rating confused. This problem is caused by the frequency characteristics of sound source and its sound level. Therefore, appropriate evaluation method should be considered based on the subjective responses. This study aims to analyze the physical parameters appropriate for the evaluation of HVAC diffuser noise. Quantifying the Urgency Perception of Voice Alarm Generated by Concatenative Synthesizer (연결형 합성음성을 이용한 경보음의 주관적 위급도 정량화)

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the factors modulating the urgency perception of voice alarm generated by concatenative synthesizers. Four experiments were conducted using psycho-physical approach in which 105 participants made magnitude estimation for urgency perception of various voice alarm stimuli. Experiment 1 identified 6 acoustic and non-acoustic factors modulating the perceived urgency of synthesized voice alarm. Experiment 2, 3 and 4 quantified the relations between the objective changes in each of the quantifiable parameters and the subjective changes in urgency perception. This research has implications for the design and implementation of synthesized voice alarm systems where urgency mapping is required.
