  • In this study, PU-LMO was made by immobilization of LMO on urethane foam (PU) with using an EVA as a binder. PU-LMO was characterized by using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The optimal ratio of EVA/LMO for preparation of PU-LMO was 0.26 gEVA/gLMO. The adsorption of lithium ions by PU-LMO was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum removal capacity of lithium ions was 17.09 mg/g. The PU-LMO was found to have a remarkably high selectivity of lithium ions and high adsorption capacity because the distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of lithium ion was higher than those of other metal ions.

  • PVA gel beads were made by immobilization of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) and trioctylphoshineoxide (TOPO) with poly vinyl alcohol (PVA). The prepared PVA gel beads were used for the removal of $Cu^{2+}$ from aqueous solution. The removal characteristics of $Cu^{2+}$ by PVA gel beads was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The maximum removal capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm equation was 9.59 mg/g. The optimal pH was in the range of 3.5~6. Even when the PVA gel beads were reused 5 times, the leakage of extractant and the damage of PVA gel beads was not observed.

  • The adsorption of crystal violet dyes from aqueous solution using the granular activated carbon was investigated. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The adsorption characteristic of crystal violet followed Langmuir isotherm. Based on the estimated Langmuir separation factor ($R_L=0.02{\sim}0.106$), this process could be employed as an effective treatment (0 < $R_L$ < 1). The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo second order model. The values of Gibbs free energy (-1.61~-11.66 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy (147.209 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption process is a spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The isosteric heat of adsorption decreased with increasing of surface loading by the limited adsorbent-adsorbate interaction due to increased surface coverage.

  • The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-DCP) in aqueous solution was studied using the magnetic activated carbon (MAC) prepared from waste citrus peel. The adsorption characteristics of 2,4-DCP by MAC were investigated by varying the contact time, MAC dose, solution temperature, pH and 2,4-DCP concentration. The isothermal adsorption data were well explained by the Langmuir isotherm model equation and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm equation was 312.5 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order reaction equation. The intraparticle diffusion model data indicated that both the film and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously during the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters of ${\Delta}H^o$ and ${\Delta}G^o$ have positive and negative values, respectively, indicating that the adsorption of 2,4-DCP by MAC is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. After the adsorption experiment was completed, the used MAC could be easily separated by an external magnet.

  • Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of operating parameters such as the temperature, initial concentration, contact time and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption of antibiotics amoxicillin (AMX) by waste citrus peel based activated carbon (WCAC). The kinetics and isotherm experiment data can be well described with the pseudo-second order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of AMX by WCAC calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 125 mg/g. The adsorption of AMX by WCAC shows that the film diffusion (external mass transfer) and the intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously during the adsorption process. The adsorption rate is more influenced by the intraparticle diffusion than that of the external mass transfer as the particle size of WCAC increases, and the intraparticle diffusion is the rate controlling step. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction of AMX by WCAC was an endothermic and spontaneous process.

  • In this study, Malachite Green (MG) dye removal from synthetic wastewaters by adsorption process using raw boron enrichment waste (BEW) and it's modifications (with acid and ultrasound) were aimed. 81% MG removal was obtained by BEW at optimum equilibrium conditions (time: 40 min., dosage: 500 mg/dm3, pH: 5-6, speed: 200 rpm, 298 K). MG removal from wastewaters using acid modified boron enrichment waste (HBEW) was determined as 82% at optimum conditions (time: 20 min., dosage: 200 mg/dm3, pH: 10, speed: 200 rpm, 298 K). For ultrasound modified BEW (UBEW), the highest MG removal percent was achieved as 84% at optimum conditions (time: 30 min, dosage: 375 mg/ dm3, pH: 8, speed: 200 rpm, 298 K). The equilibrium data of Malachite Green was evaluated for BEW, HBEW and UBEW adsorbents by using sorption isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models, out of which Langmuir model (R2 = 0.971, 0.987 and 0.984) gave better correlation and maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 147.05, 434.78 and 192.30 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation for sorption of MG onto wastes. A look at thermodynamic data reveals that natural sorption is spontaneous and endothermic because of free negative energy exchange and positive change in enthalpy, respectively. The results indicated that boron enrichment waste, and HCl and ultrasound-modified boron enrichment waste served as good alternative adsorbents in dye removal from wastewater.

  • The study objective was to evaluate the enhanced removal of high concentrations of phosphorus from synthetic wastewater (solely phosphorus-containing) and real wastewater (pig manure) by using carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated steel slag. Generally, phosphorus removal by steel slag is attributed to Ca2+ eluted from the slag. However, in this study, CNT was used to control the excess release of Ca2+ from steel slag and increase the phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal rate by the uncoated steel slag was lower than that of the CNT-coated steel slag, even though the Ca2+ concentrations were higher in the solution containing the uncoated steel slag. Therefore, the phosphorus removal could be attributed to both precipitation with Ca2+ eluted from steel slag in aqueous solution and adsorption onto the surface of the CNT-coated steel slag. Furthermore, the protons released from the CNT surface by exchanging with divalent cations acted to reduce the pH increase of the solution, which is attributed to the OH- eluted from the steel slag. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the CNT-coated steel slags followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the uncoated and CNT-coated steel slags was 6.127 and 9.268 mg P g-1 slag, respectively. In addition, phosphorus from pig manure was more effectively removed by the CNT-coated steel slag than by the uncoated slag. Over 24 hours, the PO4-P removal in pig manure was 12.3% higher by the CNT-coated slag. This CNT-coated steel slag can be used to remove both phosphorus and metals and has potential applications in high phosphorus-containing wastewater like pig manure.

  • In this study, it was investigated on the boron separation ken synthetically prepared seawater. ion exchange resin used in the experiments was Amberlite IRA 743, containing glucamine functional group. The experiments were carried out as a function of the conditions of the pH, boron initial concentration and temperature of seawater in a batch reactor. As a result, optimum conditions for boron adsorption were at pH 8.5 and 313 K, respectively. The adsorption rate was increased very fast with increasing the temperature, but decreased with increasing the initial concentration of boron. Also, the kinetics for boron adsorption applied the pseudo-second order model, as follows: $$\frac{X}{1-X}=780[C_0]^{-1.65}t^{1.48}\;exp\;({-\frac{17883}{RT}}\)\;;\;pH8.5$$

  • Poly(butylene terephthalate- co-oxybenzoate)(PBOT) containing mesogenic oxybenzoate units in the main chain was synthesized through ester exchange reaction by melt mixing of poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) and p-acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA). From the kinetics of the copolymerization reaction, the activation energies and the rate constants of homopolymerization and copolymerization, k$_{h}$ and k$_{c}$, could be determined. From the reaction conditions of different compositions, 4/6, 5/5, and 6/4 of PBT/ABA, at 250, 260, and 27$0^{\circ}C$, it was revealed that copolymerization between PBT and ABA proceeds on a pseudo-second order reaction if the ABA content and its conversion are low. In this case, the ratio of rate constants of homopolymerization to copolymerization was in the range from 1.08 to 3.17, indicating that the copolymer with more notable block character was obtained at the higher mole fraction of ABA and at higher temperature.e.e.

  • Batch adsorption experiments were performed to adsorb cadmium [Cd(II)], copper [Cu(II)], and lead [Pb(II)] onto sphagnum peat moss. According to the results, 10-50 mg/L of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) were effectively adsorbed and removed within 1 h by 1.0 g/L of sphagnum peat moss. The amounts of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorbed on sphagnum peat moss increased with increasing the initial concentrations. The kinetics for the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) on sphagnum peat moss was described well using the pseudo-second order model at different initial concentrations. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherm for Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(III) were 33.90, 29.15, and 91.74 mg/g, respectively. Experimental results showed that sphagnum peat moss was a very effective adsorbent on the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II).
