  • A microgrid is defined as two or more distributed generation or storage assets configured in a networks and capable of operation in parallel or independently form a larger electric gird, while providing continuous power to one or more end users. And when microgrid are separated from grid oprating protection devices by faults of the grid side, microsources should charge electrical power needs of loads in microgrid and operate maintaining power quality. The magnitude of the switching transients will vary based on voltage phase difference between microgrid and grid, when the microgrid is resynchronized to grid. In this paper, when microgrid is resynchronized to grid, we analyzed the existing problems for reducing switching transients of SS(Static Switch).

  • With the fast growth of Internet and a new widespread interest in optical networks, the unparalleled potential of Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is leading to further research and development efforts. One of those areas of research is Path Protection Mechanism. It is widely accepted that layer three protection and recovery mechanisms are too slow for today’s reliability requirements. Failure recovery latencies ranging from several seconds to minutes, for layer three routing protocols, have been widely reported. For this reason, a recovery mechanism at the MPLS layer capable of recovering from failed paths in 10’s of milliseconds has been sought. In light of this, several MPLS based protection mechanisms have been proposed, such as end-to-end path protection and local repair mechanism. Those mechanisms are designed for intra-domain recoveries and little or no attention has been given to the case of non-homogenous independent inter-domains. This paper presents a novel solution for the setup and maintenance of independent protection mechanisms within individual domains and merged at the domain boundaries. This innovative solution offers significant advantages including fast recovery across multiple nonhomogeneous domains and high scalability. Detailed setup and operation procedures are described. Finally, simulation results using OPNET are presented showing recovery times of a few milliseconds.

  • Presently, optical burst switching (OBS) technology is under study as a promising solution for the backbone of the optical Internet in the near future because OBS eliminates the optical buffer problem at the switching node with the help of no optical/electro/optical conversion and guarantees class of service without any buffering. To implement the OBS network, there are a lot of challenging issues to be solved. The edge router, burst offset time management, and burst assembly mechanism are critical issues. In addition, the core router needs data burst and control header packet scheduling, a protection and restoration mechanism, and a contention resolution scheme. In this paper, we focus on the burst assembly mechanism. We present a novel data burst generation algorithm that uses hysteresis characteristics in the queueing model for the ingress edge node in optical burst switching networks. Simulation with Poisson and self-similar traffic models shows that this algorithm adaptively changes the data burst size according to the offered load and offers high average data burst utilization with a lower timer operation. It also reduces the possibility of a continuous blocking problem in the bandwidth reservation request, limits the maximum queueing delay, and minimizes the required burst size by lifting up data burst utilization for bursty input IP traffic.

  • The MOV(Metal Oxide Varistor), a voltage limiting element, has been installed in the SPD(Surge Protective Device) or inside the internal circuit of an electronic appliance for protection of the electric power system and electronic device against electrical surge. Such an MOV is exposed, however, to the risk of the thermal runaway resulting from excessive voltage and deterioration. In this paper, a reciprocal action has been tested and analyzed using a phosphorus bronze switching module and the low-temperature solder. And a short current break characteristic test linked with the circuit breaker has been performed to limit the inrush current when the MOV breaks down. It has been proven that the phosphorus bronze switching module installed inside the internal circuit can improve the safety of the power line system and the electronic device.

  • This paper describes a switching-level operation analysis of BTB(Back-To-Back) converter for HVDC(high voltage DC) application based on MMC(modular multi-level converter). A switching-level operation analysis for BTB converter is very important to understand the converter operation in detail and check the voltage and current transients in each components. However, the development of switching-level simulation model for the actual size BTB Converter is very difficult because the MMC normally has more than 150 sub-modules for each arm. So, a switching level simulation model for the 11-level MMC-based BTB converter was developed with PSCAD/EMTDC software, which has 12 sub-modules for the positive arm and another 12 sub-modules for the negative arm. The DC-voltage balance algorithm, the circulating-current reduction algorithm, the harmonic reduction algorithm, and the redundancy operation algorithm were included in this simulation model. The developed simulation model can be utilized to analyze the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application in switching level and to develop the protection scheme for the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application.

  • In this paper, high efficiency power management IC(PMIC) with DT-CMOS(Dynamic threshold voltage Complementary MOSFET) switching device is presented. PMIC is controlled PWM control method in order to have high power efficiency at high current level. The DT-CMOS switch with low on-resistance is designed to decrease conduction loss. The control parts in Buck converter, that is, PWM control circuit consist of a saw-tooth generator, a band-gap reference(BGR) circuit, an error amplifier, comparator circuit, compensation circuit, and control block. The saw-tooth generator is made to have 1.2MHz oscillation frequency and full range of output swing from supply voltage(3.3V) to ground. The comparator is designed with two stage OP amplifier. And the error amplifier has 70dB DC gain and $64^{\circ}$ phase margin. DC-DC converter, based on current mode PWM control circuits and low on-resistance switching device, achieved the high efficiency nearly 96% at 100mA output current. And Buck converter is designed along LDO in standby mode which fewer than 1mA for high efficiency. Also, this paper proposes two protection circuit in order to ensure the reliability.

  • We proposed a new power system, Superconducting Power System. The SPS consists of superconducting power cables, fault current limiters, and transformers. The basic concept is to replace 154kV conventional cables with 22.9kV superconducting cables and to convert a 154kV substation into a 22.9kV switching station in downtown area. For the application of the SPS to real power system, it is very important to construct the protection system of the SPS. This study presents a protection system for the new Superconducting Power System (SPS).

  • This paper presents a new transient voltage blocking device(TOBD)which low power and high frequency bandwidth to protect info-communication facilities from transient voltages. Conventional protection devices have some problems such as low frequency bandwidth low ener-gy capacity and high remnant voltage. in order to improve these limitations a hybrid type TOBD which consists of a gas tube avalanche diodes and junction type field effect transistor (JFETs) is developed. The TOBD differs from the conventional protection devices in configuration and JFETs are used as an active non-linear element and a high speed switching diode with low capacitance limited high current. Therefore the avalanche diode with low energy capacity are protected from the high current and the TOBD has a very small input capacitance. From the performance test using combination surge generator which can produce $1.2/50{\mu}m$ 4.2 kV/max, $8/20{\mu}m$ 2.1 kAmax it is confirmed that the proposed TOBD has an excellent protection per-formance in tight clamping voltage and limiting current characteristics.

  • It is currently increasing to use surge protection devices in the protection of various electronic circuits from the transient overvoltages such as lightning strikes and switching surges. For this reason, the simulation methods, which can easily predict the protection performance of the devices, are strongly required in order to design the adequate surge protection circuits in lightning surge cut-off performance and economic aspects. This paper deals with ZnO varistor modeling method for designing a surge protection circuit and suggests the Pspice simulation model which takes the characteristic of varying clamping voltage into consideration during the time-to-crest, in range of $8{\sim}30{\mu}s$, of surge current applied to a ZnO varistor. The ZnO varistor Pspice simulation data introduced in this paper has produced almost same values as the measured results experimentally.
