  • Design codes have specified the minimum shear reinforcement requirement for reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PSC) members to prevent brittle and premature shear failure. They are, however, very different from one another, and particularly, ACI318 code allows the required minimum shear reinforcement to be reduced in PSC members, compared to that in RC members, by specifying the additional equation for PSC members whose basis is not clear. In this paper, the minimum shear reinforcement ratio for PSC members was proposed, which can provide a sufficient reserved shear strength and deformation capacity. The proposed equation was also verified by the test results of PSC specimens lightly reinforced in shear, comparing to design codes and other proposed equations from previous studies.

  • A simplified method fur the eigenpair sensitivities of damped system with multiple eigenvalues is presented. This approach employs a reduced equation to determine the sensitivities of eigenpairs of the damped vibratory systems with multiple natural frequencies. In the proposed method, adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compute an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m the number of multiplicity of multiple natural frequencies. The proposed method is an improved Lee and Jung's method which was developed previously. Two equations are used to find eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives in Lee and Jung's method. A significant advantage of this approach over Lee and Jung's method is that one algebraic equation newly developed is enough to compute such eigenvalue derivatives and eigenvector derivatives. This method can be consistently applied to both structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To demonstrate the theory of the proposed method and its possibilities in the case of multiple eigenvalues, the finite element model of the cantilever beam and 5-DOF mechanical system in the case of a non-proportionally damped system are considered as numerical examples. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. and that of the 5-DOF mechanical system is a spring.

  • We propose a near optimal controller design method for ramp metering based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. We parameterize the optimal nonlinear controller in terms of the solution matrices of an SDRE. We also give a simple algorithm to obtain the controller gain. Finally we give numerical results to show the effectiveness of the proposed near optimal traffic controller design method.

  • In order to design a conveyer system which is driven by short primary single sided linear induction motors (SLIM), the thrust force characteristics of SLIM have been calculated from the fundamental equation based on Maxwell's electromagnetic equation and by varying the various design parameters. A conveyer system of moving secondary has been constructed using the design values obtained by the simulation and these values are compared with the experimental values. The control method of the conveyer system is also proposed.

  • Problems on vibration due to blasting for infrastructure development are getting important because of a civil appeal. Blasting-induced vibration is representative construction pollution, hence, it is possible that a number of environmental damages occur. In this study, borehole test blasting was conducted at Sintanjin area, Daejeon and square root equation with 95% confidence level was proposed for prediction of blasting-induced vibration. The vibration value predicted from this equation was more conservatively evaluated than the values predicted from U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Nippon Oil & Fats Co., Ltd. (NOF) equations. Therefore, the proposed equation in this study seems to contribute for safety blast design. However, for optimal blast design, inducing equation for prediction of blasting-induced vibration through the identical test blasting with field construction such as rock slope blasting would be required.

  • In this paper, an area-efficient degree-computationless modified Euclidean (DCME) algorithm is presented and implemented for high-speed Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder. The DCME algorithm can be used to solve the key equation in Reed-Solomon decoder to get the error location polynomial and the error value polynomial. A pipelined recursive structure is adopted for reducing the area of key equation solver (KES) block with sacrifice of an amount of decoding latency. For comparisons, KES block for RS(255,239,8) decoder with the proposed architecture is implemented using Verilog HDL and synthesized using Synopsys design tool and 65nm CMOS technology. The synthesis results show that the proposed architecture can be implemented with less gate counts than other existing DCME architectures.

  • In this paper, a near optimal decentralized observer-controller design method is proposed for ramp metering systems based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. The optimal nonlinear observer gain is parameterized in terms of the solution matrix of an SDRE. This paper gives a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal observer gain. The optimal control design problem is also considered. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to illuminate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed design method.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm for active control design of structures is proposed and investigated. The algorithm preserves the decoupling property of the modal vibration equation and eliminates the spillover problem, which is the main shortcoming in the independent modal space control(IMSC) algorithm. With linear quadratic regulator(LQR) control law, the analytical solution of algebraic Riccati equation and the optimal actuator control force are obtained, and the control design procedure is significantly simplified. A numerical example for the control design of a tall building subjected to wind loads demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in reducing the acceleration and displacement responses of tall buildings under wind actions.

  • To achieve high efficiency and reliability, multiphase interleaved converters with coupled inductors have been widely applied. In this paper, a coupled inductor design method for 2-phase interleaved boost converters is presented. A new area product equation is derived to select the proper core size. The wire size, number of turns and air gap length are also determined by using the proposed coupled inductor design method. Finally, the validity of the proposed coupled inductor design method is confirmed by simulation and experimental results obtained from a design example.

  • This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for deriving inverse kinematics equation of 5-axis machine. Because the joint order and direction of 5-axis machine are different for each type of machine, each type of machine needs its own inverse kinematics equation for post-processing of NC data. Also derived inverse kinematics equation may cause problems of indeterminate and inconsistent solution. In order to resolve these problems, we have developed a generic method to derive direct kinematics equation by considering orthogonal joints of 5-axis machines. Using this method, we also have proposed a general algorithm for deriving inverse kinematics equation for various types of 5-axis machines.
