Polar rain is a spatially uniform precipitation of electrons with energies around 100eV that penetrate into the polar cap region where geomagnetic field lines are connected to the Interplanetary Magnetic Fields (IMF). Since their occurrences depend on the IMF sector polarity, they are believed to originate from the field aligned component of the solar wind. However, statistically direct correlation between polar rain and solar wind has not been shown. In this presentation, we examined specifically the IMF strength influence on the polar rain flux variation by classifying of IMF sector polarities. For this study, we employed the polar rain flux data measured by STSAT-1 and compared them with the solar wind parameters obtained from the WIND and ACE satellites. We found the direct mutuality between polar rain flux and IMF strength with correlation coefficient above 0.5. This proportional tendency appears stronger when the northern hemisphere is in the away sector of the IMF, which could be associated with a favorable geometry for magnetic reconnection. Simple particle trajectory simulation clearly shows why polar rain intensity depends on the IMF sector polarity. These results are consistent with the direct entry model of Fairfield et al.(1985), while low correlation coefficient with solar wind density, the similarity between slops of both energy spectra shows that transport process occur without acceleration.
The present study compares flow fields reconstructed by data assimilation method with different combinations of parameters. As a data assimilation method, Vortex-in-Cell-sharp (VIC#), which supplements additional constraints and multigrid approximation to Vortex-in-Cell-plus (VIC+), is used to reconstruct flow fields from scattered particle tracks. Two parameters, standard deviation of Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) and grid spacing, are mainly tested using artificial data sets which contain few particle tracks. Consequent flow fields are analyzed in terms of flow structure sizes. It is demonstrated that sizes of the flow structures are proportional to an actual scale of the standard deviation of RBF. It implies that a combination of larger grid spacing and smaller standard deviation which preserves the actual standard deviation is able to save computational resources in case of a low track density. In addition, a simple comparison using an experimental data filled with dense particle tracks is conducted.

Optimal design of an air-to-liquid finned plate heat exchanger is considered theoretically in this study. Based on existing correlations for the pressure loss and the heat transfer in channel flows, the optimal configuration of the plate heat exchanger including the optimal plate pitch and the optimal fin pitch is obtained to maximize the heat transfer within the limit of the pressure drop for a given flow depth of the plate heat exchanger. It is found that the optimal fin pitch is about one ninth of the optimal plate pitch. In the optimal configuration, the flow and thermal condition in the channels is just at the boundary between the laminar developing and laminar fully developed states. It is also found when reducing the flow depth of plate heat exchangers for compactness, the heat transfer performance can be maintained exactly the same if the geometric parameters such as the plate thickness, plate pitch, fin thickness, and fin pitch are reduced proportional to the square root of the flow depth as long as the flow keeps laminar within the heat exchangers.
The objective of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of the dynamic behavior of slope through both 1 g shaking table test and numerical analysis. Accelerometers were installed in the slope model with different types of seismic waves. The numerical analysis (ABAQUS and DEEPSOIL) was used to simulate 1 g shaking table test at infinite boundary. Similar Acceleration-time history, Spectral acceleration (SA) and Spectral acceleration amplification factor (Fa) were obtained, which verified the feasibility of modeling using ABAQUS and DEEPSOIL under the same size. The influence of the size (1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 times larger than that used in the 1 g shaking table test) of the model used in the numerical analysis were extensively investigated. According to the similitude law, ABAQUS was used to analyze the dynamic behavior of large-scale slope model. The 5% Damping Spectral acceleration (SA) and Spectral acceleration amplification factor (Fa) at the same proportional positions were compared. Based on the comparison of numerical analyses and 1 g shaking table tests, it was found that the 1 g shaking table test result can be utilized to predict the dynamic behavior of the real scale slope through numerical analysis.
Sonic wave dispersion characteristics are one of the most important targets of study, particularly in estimating shear wave velocity from borehole sonic logging. We have tested dispersion characteristics using monopole and dipole sources. Theoretical dispersion curves were computed for tool-absent and tool-included models having the same physical properties but different diameters (including ${\Phi}520mm$, ${\Phi}150mm$, and ${\Phi}76mm$). Comparisons were made between boreholes of different sizes and between tool-absent and tool-included models. Between the tool-included and the tool-absent boreholes, a close similarity in dispersion curve shape was revealed for the monopole source, and a significant difference was shown for the dipole source. However, for the cut-off frequency, particularly in the engineering boreholes (${\Phi}76mm$ and ${\Phi}50mm$), a significant difference was observed for signals from the monopole source, but approximately the same cut-off frequencies were found with the dipole source. This indicates the need of careful choice of source frequency in monopole-source sonic logging, particularly in an engineering borehole. The results of numerical experiments show that cut-off frequency is exponentially proportional to the inverse of borehole radius, irrespective of the mode type and the presence of a tool, and that the cut-off frequencies for each borehole environment could be expressed as an exponential function, rather than the inversely proportional relationship between the cut-off frequency and the borehole radius that was previously generally recognised. From the direct comparison of dispersion curves, the effects on the dispersion characteristics of borehole size and the presence of the tool can be revealed more clearly than in previous studies, which presented the dispersion curve and/or characteristics for each borehole environment separately.

When a geometric size of moonpool and an inflow velocity are determined based on the similarity of Froude number, Reynolds number is depending on the scale ratio of moonpool geometry. It means that different characteristics of flow fluctuations in moonpool can be observed depending on the scale ratio of moonpool even though Froude number is the same. In the present study two dimensional numerical simulations were performed to investigate the influence of scale ratios on the flow characteristics inside the moonpool. The inflow velocity at several scale ratios was determined to keep Froude number constant. A periodic response was observed in a small size of moonpool while a large moonpool showed complicated fluctuations with various amplitudes and frequencies, which made it difficult to distinguish the statistical steady-state response from the temporal responses in the case of large moonpool. The similarity of Froude number gave rise to a spectral characteristic which was inversely proportional to the square root of scale ratios ($f_{0.5}{\approx}{\sqrt{2}}f_1{\approx}2f_{2.0}$) but a low frequent occurrence of strong vortex ($f_{2.0}=0.07$)which is observed inside the large moonpool was characterized depending on scale ratios.

Objective: It is difficult to predict the treatment response of tissue after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) because radiation necrosis (RN) and tumor recurrence can coexist. Our study aimed to predict tumor recurrence, including the recurrence site, after SRS of brain metastasis by performing a longitudinal tumor habitat analysis. Materials and Methods: Two consecutive multiparametric MRI examinations were performed for 83 adults (mean age, 59.0 years; range, 27-82 years; 44 male and 39 female) with 103 SRS-treated brain metastases. Tumor habitats based on contrast-enhanced T1- and T2-weighted images (structural habitats) and those based on the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) images (physiological habitats) were defined using k-means voxel-wise clustering. The reference standard was based on the pathology or Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncologycriteria for brain metastases (RANO-BM). The association between parameters of single-time or longitudinal tumor habitat and the time to recurrence and the site of recurrence were evaluated using the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and Dice similarity coefficient, respectively. Results: The mean interval between the two MRI examinations was 99 days. The longitudinal analysis showed that an increase in the hypovascular cellular habitat (low ADC and low CBV) was associated with the risk of recurrence (hazard ratio [HR], 2.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46-4.91; P = 0.001). During the single-time analysis, a solid low-enhancing habitat (low T2 and low contrast-enhanced T1 signal) was associated with the risk of recurrence (HR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.01-2.35; P = 0.045). A hypovascular cellular habitat was indicative of the future recurrence site (Dice similarity coefficient = 0.423). Conclusion: After SRS of brain metastases, an increased hypovascular cellular habitat observed using a longitudinal MRI analysis was associated with the risk of recurrence (i.e., treatment resistance) and was indicative of recurrence site. A tumor habitat analysis may help guide future treatments for patients with brain metastases.

This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution pattern of international trade. The method is to analyze the principal components by changing interaction attribute matrix of four dimensions (hinterland, gateway, foreland and commodities) into two dimension matrix. The study area is the territory region of Cheongju clearance depot in inland. The result are as follows : Major spatial patterns of regional connections by hinterland, gateway and foreland are, in the case of exports, ten patterns and in the case of imports come to nine. Composition of major export and import commodities in Cheongju clearance depot are similar, but precision instrument manufactured commodity and nonmetal mineral are remarkable in export and mineral manufactured commodity machinery and electronic manufactured commodity are remarkable in import. Gateway are similar to export and import, but Incheon international airport is used more in the case of import. And Cheongiu international airport is used for some commodities and is remarkable as a foreland of import for the areas outside of Chungcheongbuk-do.
In this paper, we propose the receiver block error detection of the video codec and the image concealment algorithm using fuzzy inference. The proposed error detection and concealment algorithm gets SSD(Summation of Squared Difference) and BMC(Boundary Matching Coefficient) using the temporal and spatial similarity between corresponded blocks in the two successive frames. Proportional constant, ${\alpha}$, for threshold value, TH1 and TH2, is decided after fuzzy data is generated by each parameter. To examine the propriety of the proposed algorithm, random errors are inserted into the QCIF Susie standard image, then the error detection and concealment performance is simulated. To evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm, image quality is evaluated by PSNR for the error detection and concealed image by the existing VLC table and by the proposed method. In the experimental results, the error detection algorithm could detect all of the inserted error, the image quality is improved over 15dB after the error concealment compare to existing error detection algorithm.
This paper proposes the direction distribution of surface normal vectors as a feature descriptor of three-dimensional models. Proposed the feature descriptor handles rotation invariance using a principal component analysis(PCA) method, and performs mesh simplification to make it robust and nonsensitive against noise addition. Our method picks samples for the distribution of normal vectors to be proportional to the area of each polygon, applies weight to the normal vectors, and applies interpolation to enhance discrimination so that the information on the surface with less area may be less reflected on composing a feature descriptor. This research measures similarity between models with a L1-norm in the probability density histogram where the distances of feature descriptors are normalized. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method has improved the retrieval performance described in an average normalized modified retrieval rank(ANMRR) by about 17.2% and the retrieval performance described in a quantitative discrimination scale by 9.6%~17.5% as compared to the existing method.
