  • The case of proportional cell frequencies for the two-way cross-classification with interaction is considered. Several types of hypotheses for the general unbalanced data that are commonly used in the literature are shown, and they are written out for this particular case. A reparameterized form of the cell means model is defined to establish the reparameterized model, and orthogonal property of the model is shown using the augmented matrix and the numerator sums of squares are computed. Different ways of producing the same analysis of variance tables are shown in both orthogonal and nonorthogonal situations.

Goodness-of-Fit Tests for the Ordinal Response Models with Misspecified Links

  • The Pearson chi-squared statistic or the deviance statistic is widely used in assessing the goodness-of-fit of the generalized linear models. But these statistics are not proper in the situation of continuous explanatory variables which results in the sparseness of cell frequencies. We propose a goodness-of-fit test statistic for the cumulative logit models with ordinal responses. We consider the grouping of a dataset based on the ordinal scores obtained by fitting the assumed model. We propose the Pearson chi-squared type test statistic, which is obtained from the cross-classified table formed by the subgroups of ordinal scores and the response categories. Because the limiting distribution of the chi-squared type statistic is intractable we suggest the parametric bootstrap testing procedure to approximate the distribution of the proposed test statistic.

  • A Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) based on the heterodyne method was developed using He-Ne laser as a light source. The heterodyne method was employed to eliminate the ambiguity in the direction of the motion. The frequency shifted object beam (40 MHz) by a Bragg cell was focused on the surface of the moving target and the Doppler shifted reflected beam was combined at the fast photodetector to produce frequency modulated signal centered at 40 MHz. The signal from the detector was amplified, filtered and downconverted to intermediate frequency centered at 5 MHz. The voltage output that was proportional to the velocity of the moving surface was obtained using PLL. This LDV can be used to measure the resonant frequency of the electric equipments such as circuit breakers and bushings, of which resonant frequencies are changed when they are damaged.

  • Mosaic plots, proposed by Hartigan and Kleiner (1981, 1984), are very useful in visualizing categorical data. In mosaic plot, multi-way classified cell frequencies are represented by rectangles with proportional area. The plot is easy to understand while preserving the information contained in the data. Plot's appearance, however, does change substantially depending on the order of variables and the orders of categories with variable put into the plot. In this study, we propose the algorithms for ordering variables and categories of the categorical data to be explored via mosaic plots. We demonstrate our methods to three well-known datasets: Titanic, Housing and PreSex.

  • A Laser Doppler Vibrometer(LDV) was developed using He-Ne laser as a light source. The heterodyne method was employed and its output signal was digitally processed with a $\mu$-processor and the result was displayed with LCD. The frequency shifted object beam(40 MHz) by a Bragg cell was focused on the surface of the moving target and the Doppler shifted reflected beam was recombined with reference beam at the fast photodetector to produce frequency modulated signal centered at 40 MHz. The signal from the detector was amplified and downconverted to intermediate frequency centered at 1 MHz after mixing process. The voltage output that was proportional to the velocity of the moving surface was obtained using PLL. With the same method, the fringe pattern signal of the moving surface is obtained. This fringe pattern signal is converted to TTL signal with ZCD(zero-crossing detector) and then counted to calculate the displacement due to the vibration, which is displayed with LCD. This LDV can be used to measure the resonant frequency of the electric equipments such as circuit breakers and transformers, of which resonant frequencies are changed when they are damaged.

Increase of Vδ2+ T Cells That Robustly Produce IL-17A in Advanced Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Tissues

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a chronic dilation of the aorta with a tendency to enlarge and eventually rupture, which constitutes a major cause of cardiovascular mortality. Although T-cell infiltrates have been observed in AAA, the cellular, phenotypic, and functional characteristics of these tissue-infiltrating T cells are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the proportional changes of T-cell subsets-including CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and γδ T cells-and their effector functions in AAAs. We found that Vδ2+ T cells were presented at a higher frequency in aortic aneurysmal tissue compared to normal aortic tissue and PBMCs from patients with AAA. In contrast, no differences were observed in the frequencies of CD4+, CD8+, and Vδ1+ T cells. Moreover, we observed that the Vδ2+ T cells from AAA tissue displayed immunophenotypes indicative of CCR5+ non-exhausted effector memory cells, with a decreased proportion of CD16+ cells. Finally, we found that these Vδ2+ T cells were the main source of IL-17A in abdominal aortic aneurysmal tissue. In conclusion, our results suggest that increased Vδ2+ T cells that robustly produce IL-17A in aortic aneurysmal tissue may contribute to AAA pathogenesis and progression.

  • To investigate the combined effect of radiation and pesticide on Tradescantia somatic cell mutations, potted plants of Tradescantia 4430 on which parathion had been sprayed evenly 24 hours before irradiation. Radiation doses were 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 Gy of gamma-ray. The plants irradiated only with the gamma-ray radiation were used as control groups (CT). Pink mutation frequency increased linearly proportional to the radiation dose and the peak interval of elevated mutation frequencies appeared during 7 ~ 11 days after irradiation in both CT and Pa +${\gamma}$ groups. The slope of dose -response curve in CT was 5.99 ($r^2$= 0.988), while it was 3.43 (r$x^-2$=0.981) in Pa+${\gamma}$. It seemed that parathion pretreatment had a protective effect against radiation-induced cell damages since it decreased the slope value by 43%. It is suggested that an adaptive response or radiomodification could be induced in irradiated stamen hair cells by parathion pretreatment.

  • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70$\pm$1.32mmHg/min)compared to CF dialyzers(4.32$\pm$0.55mmHg/min)(p<0.05). However, there was no observable difference in the UFR between the two dialyzers. Neither APD nor UFR showed any significant increase with an increasing number of reuses for up to more than 20reuses. A substantial number of failures observed in APD(larger than 20mmHe/min)on the reused dialyzers(2 out of 40 CP and S out 26 C-DAK) were attributed to the Possible damage on the fibers. The purpose of this study is to identify major geometrical differences between Korean femurs 3nd others that we believe belong to Caucasians so that we would be able to get insights into the femoral component design that fits Asians including Koreans. We utilized computerized tomography (CT) images of femurs extracted from cadavers. The CT images were transformed into bitmap data by using a film scanner, and then analyzed by using a commercially available software called Image v.1.0 and a Macintosh IIci computer.The resulting data were compared with already published data. The major results show that the geometry of the Korean femurs is significantly different from that of Caucasians: (1) the anteversion angle and the canal flare index are greater by the amount of approximately 8˚ and 0.5, respectively, (2) the shape of the isthmus cross section is more round, and (3) the distance between the teaser trochanter and the proximal border of the isthmus is shelter by about 15 mm. In this paper, a new method to detect nonlinear propagation characteristics of the internal vibration in the tissue for the low frequency mechanical vibration by using bispectral analysis is proposed. In the method, low frequency vibration of f0( = 100Hz) is applied on the surface of the object, and the waveform of the internal vibration x (t) is measured from Doppler frequency modulation of silmultaneously transmitted probing ultrasonic waves. Then, the bispectra of the signal x (t) at the frequencies (f0, f0) and (f0, 2f0) are calculated to estimate the nonlinear propagation characteristics as their magnitude ratio, w here since bispectrum is free from the gaussian additive noise we can get the value with high S/N. Basic experimental system is constructed by using 3.0 MHz probing ultrasonic waves and the several experiments are carried out for some phantoms. The operating system and database management system were SCO UNIX and SCO foxbase, respectively. For program development, we used Xbase language provided by SCO foxbase. The C language was used for interface purpose. To make the system use friendly, pull-down menu was used. The system connected to our hospital information system via application program interface (API), so the information related to patient and request details is automatically transmitted to our computer. Our system interfaced with fwd complete blood count analyzers(Sysmex NE-8000 and Coulter STKS) for unidirectional data tansmission from analyzer to computer. Because the point of maximun temperature of laser-irradiated gelatin exists below the surface due to surface cooling, evaporation at the boiling temperature is made explosively from below the surface. The important parameters of this process are the conduction loss to laser power absorption (defined as the conduction-to-laser power parameter, Nk), the convection heat transfer at the surface to conduction loss (defined as Bi), dimensionless extinction coefficient (defined as Br.), and dimensionless irradiation time (defined as Fo). Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Muscle types of the lower extremity were classified according to their mechanical property of contraction, which are slow muscle (msoleus m.) and fast muscle (medial gastrocneminus m., rectus femoris m., vastus lateralis m.). Optimal parameters of electrical stimulation for slow muscles were 20 Hz, 0.2 ms square pulse. For fast muscle, 40 Hz, 0.3 ms square pulse was optimal to produce repeated contraction. Higher stimulus intensity was required when synergistic muscles were stimulated simultaneously than when they were stimulated individually. Electrical stimulation for each muscle was designed to generate bipedal locomotion, so that individual muscles alternate contraction and relaxation to simulate stance and swing phases.
