  • In this study, tests and finite element analyses were performed regarding compression after impact strength for laminated composite structures of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic widely used in structural materials. Two lay-up sequences of composite laminates were selected as test specimens and four impact energy conditions were applied respectively. Impact and compressive strength tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM standards. Impact damages in test specimens were analyzed by using non-destructive inspection method of C-Scan, and compression after impact strengths were calculated with compressive test results. Progressive failure analysis method that can progressively simulate damages and fractures of fiber/matrix/lamina/laminate level was used for impact and compressive strength analyses. All analysis results including contact force, deflection, impact damages, compressive strengths, etc. were compared to test results, and the validity of analysis method was verified.

  • In this paper, statistical volume element modeling method was developed for multi-scale progressive failure analysis of fiber reinforced composite materials. Big-size statistical volume elements (BSVEs) was considered to minimize the size effect in the micro-scale, by including as many fibers as possible. For that purpose, a mesh cutting method is suggested and adapted into the fiber model generator that creates finite element domain rapidly. The fiber defect model was also developed based on the experimental distribution of the fiber strength. The size effects from the local load sharing (LLS) are evaluated by increasing the fiber inclusion in the micro-scale model. Finally, continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model to the fiber direction was extracted from numerical analysis on BSVEs. And it was compared with strength prediction from typical representative volume element (RVE) model.

  • Three dacades of time have passed since the Korean labour movement experimented its political empowerment struggle. Generally it has failed for all some positive results. But unfortunately there were no critical and intellectual reflections regarding the failure within the labour movement. This study drew three conclusions. Firstly, the success or failure of political experiments was caused mainly by the labour regime changes of the Korean society. Secondly, the motive power was provided not by the progressive party, the Democratic Labour Party, but by the trade union movement and organization, the Minjoonochong. Lastly, the Candle-Light revolution in 2016 has produced some new conditions for the second stage of political empowerment praxis in Korean labour movement.

  • In this study, the progressive failure behavior of the composite fan blade dovetail element under tensile loading is numerically investigated through finite element(FE) simulation. The accuracy of prediction by FE simulation is verified through tensile testing. The dovetail element is one of the joints for coupling the fan blade with the disk in a turbofan engine. The dovetail element is usually made of a metal material such as titanium, but the application of composite material is being studied for weight reduction reasons. However, manufacturing defects such as drop-off ply and resin pocket inevitably occur in realizing complex shapes of the fan blade made by composite materials. To investigate the effect of these manufacturing defects on the composite fan blade dovetail element, we performed numerical simulation with FE model to compare the prediction of the FE model and the tensile test results. At this time, the cohesive zone model is used to simulate the delamination behavior. Finally, we found that FE simulation results agree with test results when considering thermal residual stress and through-thickness compression enhancement effect.

  • As environmental regulations are strengthened, automobile manufacturers continuously research lightweight structures based on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). However, it is difficult to see the effect of strength reinforcement when using a single CFRP material. To improve this, a hybrid laminate in which CFRP is mixed with the existing body structural steel was proposed. In this paper, CFRP patch reinforcement is applied to each compression/tensile action surface of a 22MnB5 metal sheet, and it was evaluated through a 3-point bending experiment. Progressive failure was observed in similar deflection on bending deformation to each one-sided reinforced specimen. After progressive failure, the tensile reinforced specimen was confirmed to separate the damaged CFRP patch and 22MnB5 sheet from the center of the flexure. The compression reinforced specimen didn't separate that CFRP patch and 22MnB5, and the strength reinforcement behavior was confirmed. In the compression reinforced specimen, damaged CFRP patches were observed at the center of flexure during bending deformation. As a result of checking the specimen of the compression reinforcement specimen with an optical microscope, It is confirmed that the damaged CFRP patch and the reinforced CFRP patch overlapped, resulting in a concentrated load. Through the experimental results, the 22MnB5 strength reinforcement characteristics according to the reinforcement position of the CFRP patch were confirmed.

  • Backgrounds/Aims: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is an autosomal recessive inherited disease requiring liver transplantation (LT). The objective of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological features and posttransplant courses of seven LT recipients with PFIC. Methods: This was a retrospective single-center study of patients with PFIC who underwent LT from January 2013 to June 2020. Results: Two and five patients were diagnosed with PFIC type 1 and type 2, respectively. For all seven patients, age of PFIC onset was at birth. Jaundice was present in all cases. Mean pretransplant total and direct bilirubin levels were 16.1 ± 8.1 mg/dL and 12.4 ± 6.2 mg/dL, respectively. Median patient age and body weight at LT were 10 months and 7 kg, respectively. Types of donors were mothers of patients in four and deceased donors in three. All five patients with PFIC type 2 recovered uneventfully. One patient each with PFIC type 1 underwent retransplantation due to graft failure or died due to multi-organ failure. Overall graft and patient survival rates at five years were 66.7% and 83.3%, respectively. Bile salt export pump immunohistochemical staining showed normal canalicular expression in two patients with PFIC type 1, focal loss in two patients with PFIC type 2, and total loss in three patients with PFIC type 2. Conclusions: LT is currently the only effective treatment for PFIC-associated end-stage liver diseases. It is mandatory to perform regular follow-up due to the risk of complications including steatohepatitis, especially for patients with PFIC type 1.

  • In this paper, an enhanced finite element model based on homogenisation technique is proposed to capture the localized failure mode of the intact rock masses. For this, bifurcation analysis at the element level is performed and, once the bifurcation is detected, equivalent material properties of the shear band and neighbouring intact rock are used to trace the post -peak behaviour of the material. It is demonstrated that mesh sensitivity of the strain softening model is overcome and progressive failure mode of rock specimen can be simulated relaistically. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the crack propagation and final failure mode can be captured with relatively coarse meshes and compares well with the experimental data available.

  • Crippling stress and failure behavior of Z-section graphite/epoxy composite laminated stringers are investigated by the nonlinear finite element method. Stringers are idealized using 9-node laminated shell element. The complete unloading model is introduced into the finite element method for the progressive failure analysis. A modified Riks method is used to trace the post-failure equilibrium path after local buckling. Finite element results are validated with previous experimental results. The results show that the most important parameter affecting the crippling stress of Z-section stringers is the flange width. In terms of stacking sequence. the highest cripping stress is found at the stringer with $[{\pm}45/0/90]s$ lamination.

  • The postbuckling compressive strengths of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panels with various fiber angles and width-to-length ratios are characterized by the nonlinear finite element method. For the iteration and load-increment along the postbuckling equilibrium path a modified arc-length method in which the effect of failure can be considered is introduced. In the progressive failure analysis the maximum stress criterion and complete unloading model are used. Present finite element results show good agreement with experiments for $[0_3/90]_s$ cylindrical panel and $[0/\pm45/90/]_s$ plate. The postbuckling compressive strength of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panel is independent of the initial buckling stress but high in the panel with large value of the bending stiffness in axial direction. In the several cylindrical panels, it is observed that the prebuckling compressive failures occur and result into the collapse before the buckling.

  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome(HUS) is characterized by acute renal failure, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia and the most common pathogen is Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157 : H7. Ischemic colitis, which rarely occurs in children, is due to the reduced local blood flow to the intestine, tissue necrosis and secondary bacterial infection. We describe a patient who was admitted with abdominal pain, vomiting and hematochezia, and diagnosed as ischemic colitis by barium enema. This patient showed hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and progressive renal failure and was subsequently diagnosed as hemolytic uremic syndrome. After hemodialysis, the patient showed improvement of symptoms and resolution of renal failure and ischemic colitis.
