Progressive collapse in a structure occurs when load bearing members are failed and the adjoining structural elements cannot resist the redistributed forces and fails subsequently, that leads to complete collapse of structure. Recently, construction using precast concrete technology is adopted increasingly because it offers many advantages like faster construction, less requirement of skilled labours at site, reduced formwork and scaffolding, massive production with reduced amount of construction waste, better quality and better surface finishing as compared to conventional reinforced concrete construction. Connections are the critical elements for any precast structure, because in past, major collapse of precast structure took place because of connection failure. In this study, behavior of four different precast wet connections with U shaped reinforcement bars provided at different locations is evaluated. Reduced 1/3rd scale precast beam column assemblies having two span beam and three columns with removed middle column are constructed and examined by performing experiments. The response of precast connections is compared with monolithic connection, under column removal scenario. The connection region of test specimens are filled by cast-in-place micro concrete with and without polypropylene fibers. Performance of specimen is evaluated on the basis of ultimate load carrying capacity, maximum deflection at the location of removed middle column, crack formation and failure propagation. Further, Finite element (FE) analysis is carried out for validation of experimental studies and understanding the performance of structural components. Monolithic and precast beam column assemblies are modeled using non-linear Finite Element (FE) analysis based software ABAQUS. Actual experimental conditions are simulated using appropriate boundary and loading conditions. Finite Element simulation results in terms of load versus deflection are compared with that of experimental study. The nonlinear FE analysis results shows good agreement with experimental results.

Open-hole tensile tests are usually performed to measure the tensile strengths of composites as they are an essential parameter for designing composite structures. However, correctly modeling the tensile test is extremely challenging as it involves various damages such as fiber and matrix damage, delamination, and debonding damage between the fiber and matrix. Therefore, a progressive damage model was developed in this study to estimate the in-plane failure and delamination between the fiber and matrix. The Hashin damage model and cohesive zone approach were used to model ply and delamination failures. The results of the present model were compared with previously published experimental and numerical findings. It was observed that neglecting delamination during finite element analysis led to overestimation of tensile strength.
To evaluate the flexural deformation and strength of composite motor case above the glass transition temperature$(T_g),\;170^{\circ}C$, of resin material, a finite element analysis(FEA) model in which material non-linearity and progressive failure mode were considered was proposed. The laminated flexural specimens which have the same lay-up and thickness as the composite motor case were tested by 4-point bending test to verify the validity of FEA model. Also. mechanical properties in high temperature were evaluated to obtain the input values for FEA. Because the material properties related to resin material were highly deteriorated in the temperature range beyond $T_g$, the flexural stiffness and strength of laminated flexural specimen in $200^{\circ}C$ were degraded by also $70\%\;and\;80\%$ in comparison with normal temperature results. Above $T_g$, the failure mode was changed from progressive failure mode initiated by matrix cracking at $90^{\circ}$ ply in bottom side and terminated by delamination at the center line of specimen to fiber compressive breakage mode at top side. From stress analysis, the progressive failure mechanism was well verified and the predicted bending stiffness and strength showed a good agreement with the test results.

Progressive collapse, which is referred to as the collapse of the entire building under local damages, is a common failure mode happened by earthquakes. The collapse process highly depends on the whole structural system. Since, asymmetry of the building plan leads to the local damage concentration; it may intensify the progressive collapse mechanism of asymmetric buildings. In this research the progressive collapse of regular and irregular 6-story RC ordinary moment resisting frame buildings are studied in the presence of the earthquake loads. Collapse process and collapse propagation are investigated using nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) in buildings with 5%, 15% and 25% mass asymmetry with respect to the number of collapsed hinges and story drifts criteria. Results show that increasing the value of mass eccentricity makes the asymmetric buildings become unstable earlier and in the early stages with lower number of the collapsed hinges. So, with increasing the mass eccentricity in building, instability and collapse of the entire building occurs earlier, with lower potential of the progressive collapse. It is also demonstrated that with increasing the mass asymmetry the decreasing trend of the number of collapsed beam and column hinges is approximately similar to the decreasing trend in the average story drifts of the mass centers and stiff edges. So, as an alternative to a much difficult-to-calculate local response parameter of the number of collapsed hinges, the story drift, as a global response parameter, measures the potential of progressive collapse more easily.

In this study the progressive collapse potential of braced frames were investigated using the nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. All of nine different brace types were considered along with a special moment-resisting frame for comparison. According to the pushdown analysis results, most braced frames designed per current design codes satisfied the design guidelines for progressive collapse initiated by loss of a first story mid-column; however most model structures showed brittle failure mode. This was caused by buckling of columns after compressive braces buckled. Among the braced frames considered, the inverted- V type braced frames showed superior ductile behavior during progressive collapse. The nonlinear dynamic analysis results showed that all the braced frame model structures remained in stable condition after sudden removal of a column, and their deflections were less than that of the moment-resisting frame.

In this paper, the progressive damage of an orthogonal grid shell fabricated with plain weave fabric CFRP under bending load was investigated. The orthogonal grids were cured with the bottom composite shell. Progressive damage analysis of an orthogonal grid shell under bending was performed using nonlinear finite element method with Hashin-Rotem failure criterion and Matzenmiller-Lubliner-Taylor(MLT) model. In addition, the three - point bending test for the structure was carried out and the test results were compared with the analysis results. The comparison results of the strain and displacement agreed well. The damage area estimated by the progressive damage analysis were compared with the visual inspection and ultrasonic non-destructive inspection.

Recently, the fiber composite materials such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, or aramid, have been frequently used in strengthening reinforced concrete structures. The fiber composite materials typically have orthotropic characteristic and the strength changes significantly acording to the direction of fibers and the method of the lamination. In this study, an algorithm to estimate the stress-strain relationship of the composite materials which have different fiber directions and symmetric or non-symmetric lamination has been developed by using Tsai-Hill and Tsai-Wu failure criteria and progressive laminate failure theory. This algorithm has been implemented to several stress-strain models for the laterally confined concrete compression members such as Mander, Hosotani, and Nakatsuka. The evaluated stress-strain behaviors by the different models are discussed.
A numerical approach for predicting the ultimate strength of laminate composites has been studied using the Weibull distribution of the strengths of lamina plies. The probabilistic initial failure strengths of laminates were calculated using Tsai-Hill failure criterion. The ultimate strength of the laminate composites has been predicted using progressive failure analysis. The experimental results show that the strength prediction based on the Weibull distribution of ply strength reasonably agrees well with the experimentals better than equal strength assumption.
Acute respiratory failure has become an increasingly frequent cause of death following shock or trauma. Interstitial or diffuse alveolar edema, as chief pathophysiologic change of acute respiratory insufficiency, can be the result of sepsis, fat embolism, cardiac failure, lung congestion, and oxygen toxicity. These pulmonary problems are extremely difficult to treat without early recognition of their development and aggressive management. If the treatment is delayed, the progressive respiratory failure is almost uniformly fatal. Authors have experienced two cases of acute respiratory insufficiency following the blunt chest trauma, which were healed uneventfully. Literatures were briefly reviewed.

For the axial crushing tests of various shape of tubes, it was reported that composite tubes need trigger mechanism to avoid brittle failure. In this study, static axial crush tests were performed with the new aluminum/GFRP hybrid tubes. Glass/Epoxy prepregs were wrapped around aluminum tube and co-cured. The failure of hybrid tube was stable and progressive without trigger mechanism, and specific energy absorption was increased to maximum 34% in comparison with aluminum tube. Effective energy absorption is possible for inner aluminum tube because wrapped composite tube constrain the deflection of aluminum tube and reduce the folding length. The failure of hybrid composite tube was stable without trigger mechanism because inner aluminum tube could play the role of crack initiator and controller. Aluminum/Glass-Epoxy hybrid tube is suitable for the vehicle front structure due to effective energy absorption capability, easy production, and simple application for RTM process.
