  • The purpose of this research was examining the effects of problem-based learning strategies(PBL) on problem solving skill conducted in Korea, using meta-analysis technique. This meta-analysis reviewed the results of 41 studies published between 1998 and 2017 in Korea. The overall weighted mean effect size value was .753 with .064 standard error which was calculated by random effects model. PBL strategies have been found to be more effective in mathematics course (d=.922), art course (d=.916), practical art course (d=.827), E-PBL (d=.791) and middle school level (d=.972). As PBL exhibit a substantial effect on students' problem solving skill, it is recommended that teachers should learn how to implement these strategies in their lesson. PBL is expected to contribute to the improvement of teaching methods as the learning environment changes during the 4th Industrial Revolution.

  • This study investigated the effects of grouping method in solving chemistry problems using Think-Aloud Paired Problem Solving (TAPPS). Three classes (125 students) of a co-ed high school in Seoul were randomly assigned to the control, the homogeneous TAPPS, and the heterogeneous TAPPS groups. Prior to the instructions, a test of awareness of metacognition was administered. In the treatment groups, students were grouped into either homogeneous or heterogeneous group on the basis of their pre-achievement levels, and worked in pairs on chemistry problems about chemical equation and stoichiometry. Students' analytical skill, problem solving ability, and awareness of metacognition were examined after the instructions. One-way ANCOVA results indicated that the scores of the homogeneous TAPPS group in the analytical skill test were significantly higher than those of the heterogeneous TAPPS group. However, there were no significant differences among the three groups in the problem solving ability and the awareness of metacognition.

  • Problem-solving ability is one of the most important learning outcomes for students to compete and accomplish in a knowledge-based society. It has been empirically proven that visualization plays a central role in problem-solving. The best performing problem-solver might have a strong visualization tendency. However, there is little research as to what factors of visualization tendency primarily related to problem-solving ability according to phases of problem-solving. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between visualization tendency and problem-solving ability, to determine which factors of visualization tendency influence problem-solving ability in each phase of problem-solving, and to examine different problem-solving ability from the perspective of the levels of visualization tendency. This study has found out that visualization tendency has a significant correlation with problem-solving ability. Especially, Generative Visualization and Spatial-Motor Visualization as sub-visualization tendency were more strongly related to each phase of problem-solving. It indicates that visualization tendency to generate and operate mental processing can be considered a major cognitive skill to improve problem-solving ability. Furthermore, students who have high visualization tendency also have significantly higher problem-solving ability than students with low visualization tendency. It shows that the levels of visualization tendency can predict variables related to students' problem-solving ability.

  • This study examined the influence of problem solving ability, communication skill and self-efficacy on clinical competence of nursing students. The research subjects were 184 grade 4 nursing students in D and G city. Data were collected from September 1 to September 10, 2016 and analyzed by independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression using the IBM SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. The results showed that the problem solving ability was 3.60, communication skill was 3.79, and self-efficacy was 3.45. The clinical competence was positively correlated with problem solving ability, communication skill and self-efficacy. Problem solving ability (${\beta}=0.283$, p<0.001), self-efficacy (${\beta}=0.249$, p<0.001), motivation for nursing (${\beta}=0.182$, p=0.002), communication skills (${\beta}=0.176$, p=0.016), and interpersonal relationships (${\beta}=0.101$, p=0.082) explained 42.8% of the total variance in clinical competence of nursing students. The most significant predictors of clinical competence were problem solving ability, followed by self-efficacy and communication skills. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an empowerment program to improve problem solving ability, self-efficacy and communication skills of nursing students.
