  • We investigated fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which consisted of a primary winding and several secondary windings connected in series between $high-T_C$ superconducting (HTSC) thin films. Each YBCO thin film has a 2 mm wide and 42 cm long meander line with 14 stripes of different length. The power imbalance due to the slight difference of Ie between YBCO current limiting elements causes the significant power burden on YBCO element with lower $I_C$. We confirmed from our experiments that the mutual coupling between the primary winding and secondary windings of the flux-lock type SFCL reduced the power imbalance between YBCO current limiting elements compared with the resistive type SFCL connected in series.

  • The dynamic characteristics of Control Element Drive Mechanism(CEDM) for Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant are studied with the CEDM modeled as a secondary mass in a simplified two degree of freedom system, while the reactor vessel as a primary mass. The optimal .mu.-f curve is developed to reduce the response amplitudes of both primary and secondary masses. In order to improve a design it is proposed that the natural frequency ratio, f, should be converged to 0.93, the mass ratio, .mu., should not be reduced, and the result should be converged to the optimal .mu.-f curve. Optimal design for CEDM components has been carried out and the response amplitude ratios of reactor are reduced 10.5 - 19.7% while those of CEDM are reduced 6.3 - 3.4%.

  • In soft ground, consolidation settlement is mainly consider. The primary consolidation settlement which is the time when the excess pore water pressure is completely dispersed and the secondary consolidation settlement which follows. Recently as the depth of consolidation layer increases the consideration of not only the primary consolidation settlement but also of the secondary consolidation settlement becomes a very important element. But up to the present there were only a few in-depth study of the secondary consolidation settlement performed. At present there are a lot of methods available when it comes to the improvement of soft soil. In this study, Preloading Method which is the most commonly used soft soil improvement method locally was used in order to investigate the method for the reduction of secondary consolidation settlement. The objective of this study is to determine the amount of preloading required to reduce secondary consolidation settlement and to determine whether secondary consolidation settlement using standard consolidation test.

  • Researches on fire resistant performance of primary structural elements such as columns and beams located at above the ground have actively been doing than those located at the below the ground from many researchers. But the structural elements such as columns at underground is very important in aspects of not only structural performance but also fire environment. The columns at the basement carry all the structural loads from the above and that means very critical in fire circumstances than that located at above the grounds. To evaluate the fire resistance performance of primary structural elements located at below the ground we conducted several sorts of surveys that contained fire regulations from several countries and structural types, materials and status of passive fire protection methods.

  • There are normally two types of the energy absorbers used in the crashworthiness of trains. The first is a structure type, which mainly used in not only the primary structures of the train but also the crash energy absorbers at the accident. The second is a module type, which just absorbs the crash energy independent of the primary structures and attached to the structures of the train. The expansion and inversion tube are widely used as the module type crash energy absorbers, especially in the train. The tubes should not be buckled under the load acting on the end of the tube in longitudinal direction during absorbing the crash energy. The buckling stability of the tubes is affected by the boundary conditions, thickness and length of tube. In this study, the effects of the length and thickness of the tubes on the buckling load are studied by using the ABAQUS, a commercial finite element analysis program, and then presents the guideline to design the tube. The analysis processes to compute the buckling load consist of a linear buckling analysis and a nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The buckling modes are evaluated by the linear buckling analysis, as using these modes, the buckling loads are computed by the nonlinear post-buckling analysis.

  • The most common structure of the current transformer (CT) consists of a length of wire wrapped many times around a silicon steel ring passed over the circuit being measured. Therefore, the primary circuit of CT consists of a single turn of the conductor, with a secondary circuit of many tens or hundreds of turns. The primary winding may be a permanent part of the current transformer, with a heavy copper bar to carry the current through the magnetic core. However, when the large current flows into a wire, it is difficult to measure its magnitude of current because the core is saturated and the core shows magnetic nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, we proposed a newly designed CT which has an air gap in the core to decrease the generated magnetic flux. Adding the air gap in the magnetic path increases the total magnetic reluctance against the same magnetic motive force (MMF). Using a ferrite core instead of steel also causes the generation of low magnetic flux. These features can protect the magnetic saturation of the CT core compared with the steel core. This technique can help the design of the CT to obtain a special shape and size.

  • Stress of a steam separator, equipment of the high-pressure (HP) evaporator for a HRSG, was analyzed and evaluated according to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. First, from the analysis results of the piping system model of the HP evaporator, reaction forces of the riser tubes connected to the steam separator, i.e., nozzle loads, were derived. Next, a finite element model of the steam separator was constructed and analyzed for the design pressure and the nozzle loads. The results show that the maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary membrane stresses at the shell and nozzle were found to be less than the allowable stress. Next, the steam separator was analyzed for the steady-state operating conditions of operating pressure, operating temperature, and nozzle loads. The maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary plus secondary membrane plus bending stress at the shell and nozzle was found to be less than the allowable stress.

  • New UBV Photometric observations for a close binary RZ Cas were obtained at the Chungbuk National University Observatory for 42 nights from October 1991 to March 1993, and standardized UBV light curves were constructed. From the primary light curves, the eight minimum times were determined by using a new light element. We confirmed the primary minimum was totality and derived the average duration was 18.1 minutes corresponding to $0.^{p}01$. The photometric and spectroscopic solutions were calculated with the obtained light curves and the radial velocity curves of Duerbeck & Hanel(1979) by using Wilson-Devinney method. From these values, the absolute dimensions of this binary system were estimated.

  • For the purpose of reduction of production cost in the industrial papermaking process, the use of waste paper has been more and more increased as a fibrous raw material, and the closed system of white water became closed more than ever. "Scum" indicates the floated sludge by a flotation during primary wastewater treatment process in paper mills. If the scum is used as the raw material, it could reduce both the raw material and solid waste treatment cost with even small quantity. In this study, the element survey and the toxicity measurement was carried out for recycling scum. A load factor of stock preparation process in paper mills was measured by somerville screen. Physical properties of paper sheet containing the accepted scum from the stock of AOCC or KOCC were evaluated. The result of this study shows that recycling scum has potential to be used in paper making system. It also might be able to reduce the required energy used by the pressing or drainage process, the raw material cost, and solid waste treatment cost due to the recycling of scum.

  • A finite element analysis of a trunnion pipe anchor is presented. The structure is analyzed for the case of internal pressure and moment loadings. The stress results are categorized as average and linearly varying(through the thickness) stresses. The resulting stresses are interpreted per Section 111 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code from which the Primary(B$_1$) and Secondary(C$_1$) stress indices for pressure, the Primary(B$_2$) and Secondary(C$_2$) stress indices for moment are developed. Several analysis were peformed on various structural geometries in order to determine empirical relationships for the stress indices as a function of dimensionless ratios.
