  • This study examined the income and price elasticities of tourism demand model by using the ARDL models. This paper used the ARDL & ARDL-RECM model based on the annual number of tourists arrivals, GDP and CPI including tourists from the US, Japan and China entering Korea. First, the income elasticity of the US was inelastic and insensitive necessities for long-run US tourists in the ARDL model. China's income elasticity was elastically sensitive luxuries. Second, the US and China's own price elasticities were very elastic to tourism demand in both models. Third, the US's cross price elasticity showed the relationship between inelastic positive substitutes and inelastic negative complements in China in ARDL model. The cross price elasticities of the US and China showed inelastic positive substitutes in the ARDL-RECM model. Fourth, the coefficients of the error correction term were such that the actual sign and the expected sign of the US and China coincided with the negative sign in the ARDL-RECM model. Therefore, first, it can be established in a tourist policy or tourism strategy through income elasticity. Second, we can improve the quality and differentiation of products, recognizing that Korea's tourism price is more elastic than other markets through price elasticity.

  • This study investigates urban household consumption patterns for clothing items in different income cohorts through the analysis of an Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) model. Korea quarterly time-series statistics data for urban household expenditures from 1990 to 2013 analyzed household demand. The price and total consumption expenditure elasticities of 4 clothing items (outer wear, shoes, clothing related services and other miscellaneous clothing) for 7 income cohorts were estimated to investigate the clothing consumption patterns of different income cohorts. The study results show that the different household income cohorts have different consumption patterns for clothing items. The elastic demand of total consumption expenditures in the lowest household income cohort suggests that they consume clothing items as luxuries while other households mostly consume them as necessities. The price elasticity for all household income cohorts and clothing items (except the highest household income cohort and outer wear) was found to be elastic. The highest household income cohort had an inelastic price demand for all clothing items that implied a less sensitive clothing consumption change for the clothing price change than other households.

  • This paper estimated the demand function of the cuts of pork by using the consumer panel and the weather data from the Korea Meteorological Administration with a log-log model and AIDS model. The results show that the price elasticity of demand for cuts of pork is high in the sequence of arm shoulder, leg, special cuts, tenderloin, blade shoulder. In contrast, spare rib, belly and loin are classified as low price elasticity of demand. The income elasticities of demand for leg and blade shoulder are 11% and 7.6% respectively. The loin is classified as inferior goods, because demand decreases when income increases. The results also demonstrate show that the demand increases highly in the sequence of loin, arm shoulder, spare rib, belly if housewife is older, and the demand of belly increases when family number increases. Belly substitutes every cut except spare rib, and tenderloin substitutes special cuts. Spare rib, on the other hand, does not substitute other cuts. In addition, job status, family member, husband job, purchasing place, consumer characteristic, eating-out times, purchasing time, and weather are statistically significant.

  • Now we are facing severe environmental issues such as global warming. Due to these, the concerns about eco-friendly energy have been increased. Kyoto protocol and Copenhagen climate change conference are circumstantial evidence of it. With these trends, the interests for the Electric Vehicles(EVs) which do not emit any harmful gases have gradually been raised. Unfortunately, however, massive connection of EVs to the power system could cause negative impacts such as voltage variations, frequency variations and increase of demand power. To prevent the mentioned issues, KEPCO adopts Time-of-Use(ToU) price for EVs charging. Nevertheless, it is important to verify the propriety of the charging system. In this paper, therefore, we used pre-introduced price elasticity concept to predict possible Demand Response(DR) on charging of EVs. And analyzed possible demand power increase according to various price elasticities. Simulation results show that given ToU based charging system would not enough to control the increase of demand power by EVs on the power system. It is concluded, therefore, additional methods and/or algorithms are required.

  • This study analyzes the price elasticities of airline Passenger demand through the 'Stated Preference' technique which uses survey data. Because the domestic airfare has been regulated by the government. it is not easy to derive Price elasticity through the usual regression analysis with aggregate data and thus a special methodology is required for elasticity estimation. Therefore, in this study we estimated the Price elasticities of domestic air passenger demand and the modal share change rates to the alternative modes with logit model and sample enumeration method, by analyzing the survey data on air Passengers' demand behavior about the mode choice between air-rail. air-bus, and air-car. As the results, the estimated price elasticities are in the range of -0.6~-0.9, and rail is mainly chosen as an alternative mode. bus is chosen Partly, and car is barely used.

  • In this study, we investigate the welfare effect of mandatory prescription(MP) in Korea. An immediate effect of MP is the increase in the implicit price of prescribed medicine, which could be obtained easily from drug stores before MP. This will lower the quantity demanded. which will in turn reduce the abuse of drugs. The key to the cost-benefit analysis of MP, therefore, should be focused on this point; price increase in the cost side and quantity decrease in the benefit side. Since we do not have as much information as needed for the analysis, however, we made strong assumptions for the clarity of numbers; the severity of moral hazard of medical doctors related to the sales of hospital drugs, constant demand elasticity, constant benefit multiplier of reduced drug usage, and so on, With these rather strong assumptions, we find that i) the benefit side is much more sensitive to demand elasticity than the cost side effect ii) the larger the demand elasticity, the greater the size of net gain of MP, though the result depends on the size of the benefit multiplier. This analysis shows that we need to have more information on the specific institutional path of health benefit diffusion caused by the reduction of drug usage, which was the major target of MP.

  • In the new electric industry, many of generators and consumers exist in competitive market and electric price is determined by the response of suppliers and consumers. Power supply and consumption make change the electric price and social welfare depends on the elasticity that indicates sensitivity to changes of price related on the electric demand or supply. If elasticity is changed, social welfare that represents the sum of producers and customers surplus will be changed together. This paper investigates the change of the social welfare depending on the elasticity, and presents the propriety of competitive electric market.

  • This study analyzes the interfuel substitution of energy demand in Korean manufacturing sector using static and dynamic linear logit models. For the period of 1981~2002, this study uses petroleum, electricity, natural gas and coal as energy sources. According to the empirical results, firstly, the own-price elasticity of coal has been increased steadily even though its elasticity is smallest compared with those of other energy sources. On the other hand, price elasticity of natural gas is largest, but its value has been decreased after 1997. Price elasticities of petroleum and electricity are very stable over the sample period. One of the main features in trends of interfuel substitution is as follows. Substitution effect of a change in price of natural gas on both petroleum and coal has been increased especially after 1997. The implication of the empirical results is summarized as follows: First, the fact of inelastic own-price elasticity of petroleum implies that the dependency of Korean manufacturing sector on petroleum and coal will be persistent even in a sharp fluctuation of petroleum price. Second, the effects of price increase in natural gas on demand for petroleum and coal are very significant. Thus, price decline of natural gas rather than price declines of coal and petroleum could be more effective as an energy price policy for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission. The assessment on this implication will remain for future researches.

  • This study judged that although milk with various properties is currently being released, the growth rate of the milk market has not changed significantly, and the reason for this is that a substitution relationship has been formed between existing white milk and milk with various properties and they are competing with each other. The purpose of this study was to provide implications for the future growth of the milk market by identifying the relationship between diversified milk attributes. As a research method for this purpose the own price elasticity, cross-price elasticity, and expenditure elasticity of each attribute were derived through the LA/AIDS demand system model, and an analysis of consumers' milk purchasing factors was conducted through factor analysis. Based on the analysis results, it presented implications for growth in the milk market, such as expanding products with great differentiation in attributes such as flavor, plant and lactose-free properties, establishment of marketing strategies targeting consumers with children, and expansion of online malls.

  • In electricity market with a imperfect competition, participants make plans of biddings and transaction strategies to maximize their own profits. The market price and the quantity are determined by bidding systems and market demands. Practically the characteristics of power demand have rather two forms; elastic region and inelastic region, than constant slope elasticity. Furthermore the price cap in the market can be modelled as a region of perfect elasticity in the demand function. This paper analyses supplier's bidding strategies which are reflected the characteristics of practical demand. Equilibrium strategies are solved by using the Bertrand model and payoff matrices.
