  • The most important issue during shield TBM tunneling in soft ground formations is to appropriately control ground surface settlement. Among various operational conditions in shield TBM tunneling, the face pressure and backfill pressure should be the most important and immediate measure to restrain surface settlement during excavation. In this paper, a 3-D hydro-mechanical coupled FE model is developed to numerically simulate the entire process of shield TBM tunneling, which is verified by comparing with real field measurements of ground surface settlement. The effect of permeability and stiffness of ground formations on tunneling-induced surface settlement was discussed in the parametric study. An increase in the face pressure and backfill pressure does not always lead to a decrease in surface settlement, but there are the critical face pressure and backfill pressure. In addition, considering the relatively low permeability of ground formations, the surface settlement consists of two parts, i.e., immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, which shows a distinct settlement behavior to each other.

  • Settlement in the Shallow Foundation are presented. Various practical methods to calculate immediate settlement, consolidation settlement, and secondary compression of the compressive soils under the shallow foundation are summerized. Especially the critical depth for settlement calculation, the contact pressure, the allowable settlement of the shallow foundation are recommended.

  • This study was performed to estimate the degree of consolidation using excess pore water pressure in the very soft ground. The final settlement prediction methods by Hyperbolic, Asaoka and Curve fitting methods from the measured settlement data were used to compare with the degree of consolidation estimated by excess pore water pressure. The dissipated excess pore water pressure during embankment construction and the peak excess pore water pressure on the completed embankment were used for the estimation of the degree of consolidation. After completion of embankment, it was concluded that the degree of consolidation estimated from dissipated excess pore water pressure was more reliable than that from the peak excess pore water pressure. And, the degree of consolidation estimated from the surface settlement was nearly the same as settlement of each layer. The degree of consolidation estimated from dissipated excess pore water pressure was a little larger than that from settlement.

  • Artesian pressure exists in Yangsan site, the maximum value of which has been measured as high as 5 t/m$^2$. This paper deals with the prediction of consolidation settlement for the site with artesian pressure. The consolidation settlement at the site has been accelerated using vertical band drains. Since the artesian pressure gives lower effective stress than a static condition, its effect should be considered in the settlement prediction. This case study shows that the prediction of settlement and pore pressure dissipation agrees well with the measurements, when considering the artesian effect.

  • To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.

  • Predicted behaviour of a soft clay deposit in design stage is sometimes different from in-situ settlement and pore pressure measured during and after construction. In this paper, characteristics of settlement and pore pressure occurred in soft soil deposits were investigated briefly in order to get a better understanding of time-dependent viscoplastic behaviour and prevent geotechnical problems resulted from long-term settlement, differential settlement, etc.

  • This study was performed to analyze the degree of consolidation by the dissipation of excessive pore water pressure and final settlement prediction methods of the very soft clay. Hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and curve fitting method were used to compute the degree of consolidation. The degree of consolidation with excessive pore water pressure were used to compute, which considered the dissipation time with embankment construction. The degree of consolidation that was obtained by the peak excessive pore water pressure was less than in the case of the dissipation excessive pore water pressure. And, the degree of consolidation by the total settlement was nearly the same value that of layer settlement. The degree of consolidation that was obtained by excessive pore water pressure was larger than in the case of the settlement.

  • Tunnel boring machines combined with the earth pressure balanced shield method (EPB shield TBMs) have been adopted in urban areas as they allow excavation of tunnels with limited ground deformation through continuous and repetitive excavation and support. Nevertheless, the expansion of TBM construction requires much more minor and exquisitely controlled surface settlement to prevent economic loss. Several parametric studies controlling the tunnel's geometry, ground properties, and TBM operational factors assuming ordinary conditions for EPB shield TBM excavation have been conducted, but the impact of excessive excavation on the induced settlement has not been adequately studied. This study conducted a numerical evaluation of surface settlement induced by the ground loss from face imbalance, excessive excavation, and tail void grouting. The numerical model was constructed using FLAC3D and validated by comparing its result with the field data from literature. Then, parametric studies were conducted by controlling the ground stiffness, face pressure, tail void grouting pressure, and additional volume of muck discharge. As a result, the contribution of these operational factors to the surface settlement appeared differently depending on the ground stiffness. Except for the ground stiffness as the dominant factor, the order of variation of surface settlement was investigated, and the volume of additional muck discharge was found to be the largest, followed by the face pressure and tail void grouting pressure. The results from this study are expected to contribute to the development of settlement prediction models and understanding the surface settlement behavior induced by TBM excavation.

  • When subjected to earthquake shaking, saturated sandy soil may generate excess pore pressure. And a time may come when initial confining pressure will equal to excess pore pressure. Depending on the characteristics of the soil and the length of the drainage path, excess pore pressure was dissipated after earthquake. For this reason, it was induced settlement in grounds and fatal damage of various structures. In this study, settlement in silty sand grounds induced earthquake was evaluated using post-liquefaction constitutive equation between volumetric strain and shear strain from previous study. Using that, it was proposed that simplified estimation of settlement in silty sand grounds induced liquefaction.

  • In this paper the effect of confining pressure and tunnel depth on the ground vertical settlement has been investigated using particle flow code (PFC2D). For this perpuse firstly calibration of PFC2D was performed using both of tensile test and triaxial test. Then a model with dimention of 100 m × 100 m was built. A circular tunnel with diameter of 20 m was drillled in the middle of the model. Also, a rectangular tunnel with wide of 10 m and length of 20 m was drilled in the model. The center of tunnel was situated 15 m, 20 m, 25 m, 30 m, 35 m, 40 m, 45 m, 50 m, 55 m and 60 m below the ground surface. these models are under confining pressure of 0.001 GPa, 0.005 GPa, 0.01 GPa, 0.03 GPa, 0.05 GPa and 0.07 GPa. The results show that the volume of colapce zone is constant by increasing the distance between ground surface and tunnel position. Also, the volume of colapce zone was increased by decreasing of confining pressure. The maximum of settlement occurs at the top of the tunnel roof. The maximum of settlement occurs when center of tunnel was situated 15 m below the ground surface. The settlement decreases by increasing the distance between tunnel center line and measuring circles in the ground surface. The minimum of settlement occurs when center of circular tunnel was situated 60 m below the surface ground. Its to be note that the settlement increase by decreasing the confining pressure.
