This paper briefly discusses the main sources of errors and their solutions for measuring hydrogen uptake from gas phase by the Sieverts technique. Correction of volumetric errors of apparatus, density of hydrogen storage material, estimation of temperature gradient are investigated. Systematic errors and the change of density of the host material according to the pressure have been the subject of much controversy in recent years. We considered the standard ball calibration, temperature gradient distribution, pretreatment of hydrogen storage materials to minimize errors. We could lessen the miscalculations after applying those methods to Equilibrium pressure-composition isotherm data.
Recently fuel cell is considered to be a new technology that can substitute the ICE(Internal Combustion Engine) as well as overcome environmental issues. In military applications, fuel cell has an unique advantages, which are quietness, namely, stealth. The environmental requirement such as shock and vibration in military application, however, is very severe comparing to civilian demand. Especially, the safety concerning hydrogen storage is the most important problem. Among the candidate methods to store hydrogen, the metal hydride storage is promising method owing to the storage mechanism of chemical absorption of hydrogen to metal hydrides. In this study, the new composition of Ti-Zr type metal hydride(A composition) was suggested and investigated to increase the hydrogen storage capacity. For comparison, the hydrogen charge-discharge properties were investigated with the commercialized Ti-Zr type metal hydride(B composition) using PCT(Pressure-Composition-Temperature) measurement. Also two hydrogen storage cylinders were loaded with each metal hydride and their hydrogen charging and discharging characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the new Ti-Zr type metal hydride has a slightly higher hydrogen storage capacity compared to commercial Ti-Zr type metal hydride.
$MgH_2$ was synthesized by hydriding chemical vapor deposition (HCVD). In this study, we examined the hydrogen storage property of $MgH_2$ synthesized by HCVD. The results of pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) measurement showed that the HCVDed $MgH_2$ reversibly absorbed hydrogen as much as 6 wt%. Each hydrogenation rate was very greater than the conventional alloy methods. The reason was that the particle size made by HCVD was small as approximately 1 ${\mu}m$. The PCT of $MgH_2$ made by HCVD methode was similar to a commercial $MgH_2$. The ${\Delta}H$ and ${\Delta}S$ value are respectively -76.8 $kJ/mol{\cdot}H_2$ and -137.4 $kJ/mol{\cdot}H_2$. Mg made by HCVD methode was activated easily than commercial Mg. Also the initial reaction rate was faster than that of commercial $MgH_2$. 70% of the total storage were stored during 400s.
The hydrogen energy had recognized clean and high efficiency energy source. The research field of hydrogen energy was production, storage, application and transport. The commercial storage method was using high pressure tanks but it was not safety. However metal hydride was very safety due to high chemical stability. Mg and Mg alloys are attractive as hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and high absorption capacity (about 7.6 wt%). Their range of applications could be further extended if their hydrogenation properties and degradation behavior could be improved. The main emphasis of this study was to find an economical manufacturing method for Mg-Ti-Ni-H systems, and to investigate their hydrogenation properties. In order to examine their hydrogenation behavior, a Sievert's type automatic pressure-compositionisotherm (PCI) apparatus was used and experiments were performed at 423, 473, 523, 573, 623 and 673 K. The results of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the absorbed hydrogen contents were around 2.5wt.% for (Mg8Ti2)-10 wt.%Ni. With an increasing Ni content, the absorbed hydrogen content decreased to 1.7 wt%, whereas the dehydriding starting temperatures were lowered by some 70-100 K. The results of PCI on (Mg8Ti2)-20 wt.%Ni showed that its hydrogen capacity was around 5.5 wt% and its reversible capacity and plateau pressure were also excellent at 623 K and 673 K.
Tritium was attracted with high energy source in neutron fusion energy systems. A number of research was performed in tritium storage materials. The Korea was raised storage and delivery systems (SDS) of international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) research. However, bottles of SDS would be important because of stability. The bottles have a welding zone, this zone will be vulnerable to hydrogen embrittlement. This zone have a high thermodynamic energy and heat deterioration. Therefore bottles were studied about hydrogen embrittlement to retain stability. The heat treatment of hydrogen was carried under pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) apparatus because of checking at real time. And then, mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile test and hardness test. In results of this study, hydrogen atmosphere condition is very important by tensile test and kinetics test. The samples were evaluated, that is more weak hydrogen pressure, increasing temperature and time. This results could be useful in SDS bottle designs.
Mg hydride has a relatively high hydrogen storage amount of 7.6wt%, and inexpensive due to abundant resources, but has high reaction temperature and long reaction time because of treble oxidation reactivity and upper activation energy. Their range of applications could be further extended if their hydrogenation kinetics and degradation behavior could be improved. Therefore, the effect of CaO has improved the hydrogenation kinetics and slowed down the degradation. This study focused on investigating whether to improve the hydrogenation kinetics by synthesizing Mg2NiHx-5wt% CaO composites. The Mg2NiHx-5wt% CaO composites have been synthesized by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. The synthesized composites were characterized by performing X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Thermogravimetric, and Sivert's type automatic pressure-composition-temperature analysis. Hydriding kinetics were performed using an automatic PCT measurement system and evaluated over the temperature range of 423 K, 523 K, and 623 K. As a result of calculating the hydrogen adsorption amount through the hydrogenation kinetics curve, it was calculated as about 0.42wt%, 0.91wt%, and 1.15wt%, the highest at 623 K and the lowest at 423 K.
Mg and Mg-based alloys are most important hydrogen storage materials. It is a lightweight and low-cost materials with high hydrogen storage capacity. However, the formation of hydride at high temperature, the deterioration effect, the hydriding and dehydriding kinetics are bad factor for application. In this study, Mg and Ni have been produced by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying(HIMA) process. The raw materials, Mg(purity 99.9%) chip and Ni(purity 99.95%) chip was prepared by using a planetary ball mill apparatus(FRITSCH pulverisette 5). The balls to chips mass ratio(BCR) are 30:1. The hydrogen pressure induced 2.0MPa and milling times were 12, 24, 48, 72, 96 hours with a rotating speed of 200rpm. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis was made to characterize the crystallite size and misfit strain. The crystallite size measured by laser particle size analysis(PSA). Microstructure changes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and the transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The hydrogen storage properties were evaluated by using an Sivert's type automatic pressure-composition-therm(PCT) apparatus.
Recently, the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels for rapid industrial development and population significantly caused an environment pollution and global warming such as climate change. So research and development of sustainable and eco-friendly energy have been performed. Especially the interest in nuclear fusion fuel was significantly increased from the developed countries. The system of fusion energy production was tritium separation, storage and delivery, and purification. Republic of Korea is in charge of Storage and Delivery System (SDS) in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Welding part of the SDS bottles for storing the tritium is known to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, conducted a study for the relaxation of the stability and hydrogen embrittlement of the weld area. The hydrogen heat treatment was processed through the Pressure-Composition-Temperature (PCT) device according to the time variation. Also mechanical properties such as impact test and hardness test according to using the alkaline cleaning liquid for hydrogen embrittlement relief and the fracture was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the mechanical properties evaluation.
