  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate flow characteristics of STED with ram structure shape. By increasing the attack angle of shock cone, vacuum pressure is increased because of oblique shock at ram structure and separation point moved to the downstream of the second throat. By increasing blockage ratio, expansion wave angle is increased at ram structure while vacuum pressure is constant.

  • Supersonic Dual Bell Nozzle (SDBN) is an altitude-adaptive propulsion nozzle achieved only by a nozzle wall inflection. In order to investigate the altitude adaptive capability and the effectiveness of this nozzle concept, the present study addresses a computational work of the flow through SDBN. Several types of the SDBNs are tested for a wide range of the pressure ratio which covers from an over-expended flow to a fully under-expended flow at the exit of the SDBN. Axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume differencing scheme. The present computational results reveal that the base nozzle length affects the shock wave system occurring inside SDBN. For a quit wide range of the pressure ratio the flow separation occurs at the nozzle inflection point. It is found that the maximum thrust coefficient is obtainable for the correct expansion state at the exit of SDBN.

  • Thrust vectoring control by injection of secondary jet inside a convergent-divergent supersonic nozzle was studied by both experimentally and computationally. For various stagnation pressure of the secondary jet injected at a specific location(12 mm-downstream of throat) in the divergent section of nozzle, the characteristics of thrust vectoring were observed. Present numerical results were compared with previous investigators' results and Schlieren flow visualizations for the identical boundary conditions, and it showed a qualitatively good agreement. It was also noticed that the characteristics of thrust vectoring is strongly related to the reflection structure of oblique shock inside nozzle, ie., the pressure ratio of the secondary jet, SPR.

  • The flowfield around transonic wing-body configuration was simulated using in-house CFD code and compared with the experimental data to understand the influence of several features of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) ; grid dependency, turbulence models, spatial discretization, and viscosity. The wing-body configuration consists of a simple planform RAE Wing 'A' with an RAE 101 airfoil section and an axisymmetric body. The in-house CFD code is a compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes solver based on unstructured grid. For the turbulence model, the $k-{\omega}$ model, the Spalart-Allmaras model, and the $k-{\omega}$ SST model were applied. For the spatial discretization method, the central differencing scheme with Jameson's artificial viscosity and Roe's upwind differencing scheme were applied. The results calculated were generally in good agreement with experimental data. However, it was shown that the pressure distribution and shock-wave position were slightly affected by the turbulence models and the spatial discretization methods. It was known that the turbulent viscous effect should be considered in order to predict the accurate shock wave position.

  • Water pipes are laid on the ground, making it impossible to visually detect leaks due to aging of pipes, and technology to detect leaks in pipes is mainly used to detect leaks in pipes by detecting leaks. In this paper, two accelerometers were attached to both ends of the constant water piping to calculate the time difference between the acquired data to detect leakage points. The leak test of piping was performed by installing valves at 4.3m, 8.6m, and 12.9m points on piping 17.2m, and changing the development rate of valves to 30% and 70%. Leakage can be detected for pressure drop in piping, which is 30% and 70% open valve. It is very important to detect leakage in the early stage, and it is judged that detection of the initial leak point from the algorithm applied in this paper will be possible.

  • Probing the electronic structures of crystalline Mg-silicates at high pressure is essential for understanding the various macroscopic properties of mantle materials in Earth's interior. Quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory are used to explore the atomic configuration and electronic structures of Earth materials at high pressure. Here, we calculate the partial density of states (PDOS) and O K-edge energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) spectra for $MgSiO_3$ perovskite at 25 GPa and 120 GPa using the WIEN2k program based on the full-potential linearized projected augmented wave (FP-LPAW) method. The calculated PDOS and O K-edge ELNES spectra for $MgSiO_3$ Pv show significant pressure-induced changes in their characteristic spectral features and relative peak intensity. These changes in spectral features of $MgSiO_3$ Pv indicate that the pressure-induced changes in local atomic configuration around O atoms such as Si-O, O-O, and Mg-O length can induce the significant changes on the local electronic structures around O atoms. The result also indicates that the significant changes in O K-edge features can results from the topological densification at constant Si coordination number. This study can provide a unique opportunity to understand the atomistic origins of pressure-induced changes in local electronic structures of crystalline and amorphous $MgSiO_3$ at high pressure more systematically.

  • Buried natural gas pipelines in densely populated urban areas have serious hazards of property damages and casualties generated by release, dispersion, fire and explosion of gas caused by outside or inside failures. So as to prevent any accident in advance, managers implement danger management based on quantitative risk analysis. In order to evaluate quantitative risk about buried natural gas pipelines, we need calculation for radiant heat and pressure wave caused by calculation for release rate of chemical material, dispersion analysis, fire or explosion modeling through consequence analysis in priority, in this paper, we carry out calculation for release rate of pressured natural gas, radiant heat of fireball based in accident scenario of actual "San Bruno" buried high pressured pipelines through models which CCPS, TNO provide and compare with an actual damage result.

  • Considering the complexity and difficulty on the researching, how to enhance the performance of ejector-diffuser system effectively became a significant task. In the present study, the supersonic nozzle was redesigned using Chevrons installed at the inlet of the secondary stream of the ejector-diffuser system for the purpose of the performance improvement. A CFD method based on Fluent has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows and shock waves inside the ejector. Primary numerical analysis results show that the Chevrons get a positive effect on the ejector flows. The comparison of ejector performance with and without the Chevron was obtained and optimal number of chevron lobe is discussed to increase the performance. The ejector-diffuser system performance is discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, pressure recovery as well as total pressure loss.

  • As a gas explosion is the most fatal accident in shipbuilding and offshore plant industries, all safety critical elements on the topside of offshore platforms should retain their integrity against blast pressure. Even though many efforts have been devoted to develop blast-resistant design methods in the offshore engineering field, there still remain several issues needed to be carefully investigated. From a procedure for calculation of explosion design pressure, impulse of a design pressure model having completely positive side only is determined by the absolute area of each obtained transient pressure response through the CFD analysis. The negative pressure phase in a general gas explosion, however, is often quite considerable unlike gaseous detonation or TNT explosion. The main objective of this study is to thoroughly examine the effect of the negative pressure phase on structural behavior. A blast wall for specific FPSO topside is selected to analyze structural response under the blast pressure. Because the blast wall is considered an essential structure for blast-resistant design. Pressure time history data were obtained by explosion simulations using FLACS, and the nonlinear transient finite element analyses were performed using LS-DYNA.

  • Theoretical backgrounds on the experimental methods of explosive welding, explosive forming and shock consolidation of powders are introduced. Explosive welding experiments of titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SUS 304) plate were carried out. It was revealed that a series of waves of metal jet are generated in the contact surface between both materials; and that the optimal collision velocity and collision angle is about 2,100~2,800 m/s and $15{\sim}20^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, explosive forming experiments of Al plate were performed and compared to a conventional press forming method. The results confirmed that the shock-loaded Al plate has a larger curvature deformation than those made using conventional press forming. For shock consolidation of powders, the propagation behaviors of a detonation wave and underwater shock wave generated by explosion of an explosive are investigated by means of numerical calculation. The results revealed that the generation and convergence of reflected waves occur at the wall and center position of water column, and also the peak pressure of the converged reflected waves was 20 GPa which exceeds the detonation pressure. As results from the consolidation experiments of metal/ceramic powders ($Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$), shock-consolidated $Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$ bulk without cracks was successfully obtained by adapting the suggested water container and strong bonding between powder particles was confirmed through microscopic observations.
