  • A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.

  • A systematic experimental study is carried out for the fire fighting monitor nozzle of 65A diameter to design and manufacture a new nozzle with better water spray performance than available domestic nozzles. The nozzle inlet pressure, flow rate and reach for the discharged water from the nozzle are measured by utilizing the experimental facility consisting of two pumps and piping system with a flow meter and pressure gauges. It was found that the baffle position and baffle head chamfering were the most sensitive design factors to be remarkably changed in the flow rate of the discharged water. Also, It was confirmed that the baffle position and the water exit area had the significant effect on the change in reach distance. The results obtained from this study are expected to be used effectively to design new nozzles with excellent spray performances and also to validate numerical analysis results for evaluating the water spray performance of fire fighting monitor nozzles.

  • This study presents a CRUD modelling to simulate the thermal resistance behavior of CRUD, deposited on the surface of a cladding tube of a fuel assembly. When heat produced from fuels transfers to a coolant through a cladding tube, the CRUD acting as an additional thermal resistance is expressed as two layers, i.e., a solid oxide layer and an imaginary fluid layer, which are added to the experimental tube's heat structure of the MARS-KS input data. The validation calculation for the experiments performed in UNIST-DISNY facility showed that the center and surface temperatures of the cladding tube increased as the porosity and the steam amount inside pores of the CRUD got higher. In addition, the temperature gradient in the imaginary fluid layer was calculated to be larger than that in the solid oxide part, indicating that the steam amount inside the layer acted more largely as thermal resistance. It was also evaluated through sensitivity calculations that the cladding tube temperature was more sensitive to the CRUD porosity and the steam amount in pores than to the inlet flow rate of the coolant.

  • Suspended monorail trains (SMTs) are sensitive to crosswinds, and instantaneous aerodynamic characteristics of two SMTs passing each other under crosswinds are particularly complicated. In this study, a pressure measurement test is carried out on stationary train-bridge models arranged in several critical positions. In addition, a validated moving CFD model is developed with the dynamic and sliding mesh method to explore the realistic train movement effects. The time-varying aerodynamic forces and surface pressure distribution on, as well as the flow field around running trains and bridges during trains passing each other, are computed in detail to illustrate the shielding effect of the upstream train. The results reveal that when two trains begin to pass each other, the side force coefficient of the downstream train reduces significantly to negative values due to the wind shielding effect of the upstream train. The moving model successfully captures that airflow is separated on the middle line of the head car for the suspended monorail train, and the surrounding bluff double-beams can significantly affect the flow structures around the train. The wind shielding effect of the upstream train on the downstream train will weaken as the relative yaw angle decreases.

  • Purpose : High-Sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) has been recognized as a very useful and sensitive predictor of the future risk of myocardial infarction. But the clinical significance of hs-CRP in children remains uncertain. To confirm the existence of obesity-induced vascular inflammation and the association between metabolic syndromes and elevation of CRP in children, we investigated the relationship among CRP, obesity, blood pressure(BP), and serum lipids in schoolboys. Methods : Twenty-eight obese(BMI $29.61{\pm}3.29kg/m^2$) and 93 non-obese(BMI $18.99{\pm}2.21kg/m^2$) boys aged 14 years were examined. Serum CRP levels was measured by the high sensitive latex turbidimetric immunoassay and subjects with CRP levels below 0.3 mg/dL were adopted to avoid the influence of acute infection. Results : Obese children had significantly higher hs-CRP levels than their non-obese group($0.104{\pm}0.075$ vs. $0.054{\pm}0.005mg/dL$). In the obese group, BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, apolipoprotein B, atherogenic index, and triglyceride were significantly higher than in nonobese. The BMI, diastolic blood pressure, apolipoprotein E, atherognic index, and triglyceride showed positive correlation with log CRP by simple regression. Multiple regression analysis indicated that BMI and apolipoprotein E were strongly related to CRP. Conclusion : This study revealed that obese children tended to have higher levels of serum hsCRP, BP elevation and dyslipidemia than the control group and that BMI and apolipoprotein E were strongly related to CRP. These results indicate that obesity related metabolic syndrome can be developed in children.

  • Recently, devices such as smart watches capable of measuring small biosignals have been released. Body composition, blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation can be easily obtained. However, the part that is not trusted by the user is accuracy. These biosignals are sensitive to the external environment and have large fluctuations depending on the conditions inside the subject's body. Blood pressure measurements, in particular, still give different results, depending on how the conditions in the body are handled. Therefore, in this study, PPG was analyzed to measure PTT at two points of 80% and 100%, the highest in PTT measurement. The effect of the measured value on SBP and DBP was analyzed and a method was proposed to increase the accuracy. As a result of the study, the measured value of PTT at 80% of the peak PPG is more effective in estimating blood pressure of SBP and DBP than the value measured at 100%. In the regression analysis of the rate of change blood pressure estimation, the coefficient of determination of SBP (80%) was 0.6946, and DBP (100%) was 0.547.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adequate clothing pressure of upper and lower body foundation garment and subjective assessment of those compressive foundation depending on various wearing conditions. Eighteen women in their 30s and 40s participated in the experiments for this study to evaluate the level of clothing pressure of girdle and waist nipper. Subjects were divided into two groups by the wearing habits of foundation, one is the group of wearing foundation garment 'tightly' and the other is 'loosely', It was found that the group wearing foundation garment 'loosely' was much more sensitive than the group of 'tightly' in everyday life. The adequate pressure of upper foundation, waist nipper was about $1.5{\pm}0.8$ kPa which is lower than that of the lower body foundation, girdle. And at the same time, the sensitivity of the pressure level was higher when subjects are wearing waist nipper compared with wearing girdle. Therefore, precise pattern making process is necessary to meet the adequate level of pressure of the upper body foundation such as waist nipper, specially for those who used to wear clothing loosely.

  • Magnetic properties of the isotropic and anisotropic NdFeB magnets obtained by the Current-Applied Pressure-Assisted (CAPA) process from a melt-spun NdFeB powder were investigated using B-H loop analyser. The coercivity of the isotropic magnets is sensitive to the applied pressure in the CA-pressing and increases with increasing the pressure. The remanence of the anisotropic magnet increases with increasing the degree of deformation, and it results in the increase of a maximum energy Product. The best magnetic Properies of the isotropic and anistropic magnet are B$\sub$r/= 8.7 kG, $\sub$i/H$\sub$c/= 16.9 kOe, (BH)$\sub$max/= 16.5 and B$\sub$r/= 13.6 kG, $\sub$i/H$\sub$c/= 10.9 kOe, (BH)$\sub$max/= 44.2 MGOe, respectively.

  • Optical fiber has many advantages, such as high reliability, long lifetime, immunity to the electromagnetic interference, high speed response and low cost. In this study, we proposed and developed an optical fiber impact and pressure sensor for prevention of accident which occurs in the automatic system or auto door. The principle of the sensor is to detect different optical intensity caused by variation of a speckle pattern due to the external perturbation. Speckle pattern appears at the end of a multimode fiber in which coherent beam propagates. The fabricated sensor in this study was tested. As a result of experiments, amplitude of the output signal isn't linear, but it has sufficient sensitivity for a sensor. Moreover, we can control sensitivity of the sensor by an amplifier at receiver. It has several advantages which are ability of detection at all point on the multimode fiber, large sensitive area, and many application areas for a sensing impact and pressure.

  • Nonlinear behaviors such as steep-fronted wave motions and a finite amplitude limit cycle often accompanying combustion instabilities have been numerically investigated using a characteristic-based approximate Riemann solver and the well-known ${\eta}-{\tau}$ model. A resonant pipe initially subjected to a harmonic pressure disturbance described the natural steepening process that leads to a shocked N-wave. For a linearly unstable regime, pressure oscillations reach a limit cycle which is independent of the characteristics of the initial disturbances and depends only on combustion parameters and operating conditions. For the 1.5 MW gas generator under development in KARI, the numerical results show good agreement with experimental data from hot-firing tests.
