Case Studies in EFL Reading: Perceptions, Experiences, and Strategies

  • This case study aimed to explore proficient EFL readers' perceptions and experiences about reading tasks and how those perceptions and experiences influence their reading processing behaviors, and to examine how the cultural background of a text affects their reading strategies and comprehension. Three college students who were non-English majors participated in this study. Three data sources were employed: questionnaires, interviews, and think-alouds. The results showed that: (1) the participants emphasized comprehension as the goal of reading and considered themselves good EFL readers; (2) their reading purposes were closely associated with personal pursuits; (3) they preferred to read materials that deal with areas of interest but did not try to take a risk in terms of level of difficulty and/or length; (4) they implemented a multistrategic approach to reading in that the majority of their strategy use was in conjunction with their concern about meaning construction; (5) they were able to develop useful understandings of unknown vocabulary; and (6) their clear awareness of the cultural background presupposed in the text helped them invoke prior knowledge and reduce unknown vocabulary hindrances which contributed to comprehension. Pedagogical implications for EFL reading instruction are provided.

호주 한국학 연구자들의 자료 접근 및 연구 분야에 대한 연구 (A Study of Koreanists' Areas of Interest and Their Access to the Relevant Resources in Australia)

  • 이 연구는 호주의 한국학 자료에 관한 연구자들의 요구에 대해 논의한다. 연구는 한국학 연구자의 연구 분야, 연구 자료 수집 방법, 선호하는 자료 유형 및 호주의 학술 도서관에서 제공하는 서비스 사용에 대한 설문 조사 및 인터뷰를 통해 수행되었다. 자료 접근성은 연구자들의 주요 관심사였으며, 대학도서관에서 한국학 자료에 쉽게 접근 할 수 있는 방법, 예를 들어 한국학 주제 전문 사서의 필요성이 제기되었다. 또한 이 연구는 한국학 연구자들과 한국학 장서가 없는 대학의 사서들이 호주 한국학의 최근 연구 동향을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

카페공간에서 방문의도성과 대상체의 유무에 따른 관심영역 분석 (An Analyzed the Area of Interest based on the Visiting Intention and Existence of People in Cafe Space)

  • To determine "how humans move in space, what they want, and through which visual information they act and choose," this study aims to define in which sense space is preferred in gaze. The ultimate goal is to extract data of human visual awareness and preference in space. This study analyzed the observation characteristics perceived through observation frequency and time depending on the purpose cafe customers to understand what intension of visiting the space has on the observation characteristics which are the results obtained as information through visual perception. This research methods are as follows. First, the areas of preference in $caf{\acute{e}}$ space gazed by visual concentration are analyzed by divided into 12 by 12 grid A and B images separated depends on existence of people. Second, eye-tracking visual path in conscious gaze is analyzed to examine. Third, though the higher section frequency is likely to have more observation time, the interest area of I(3sec/180), II(6sec/360) and III(9sec/540) had higher frequency of Intention. The followings are the results of this study. First, the time range for searching or wandering and the observation characteristics could be estimated by the meaning of observation time by grade with the time-range out of the distribution of sections. Second, at the time distribution by section, when there was intention, the observation time was found to have higher occupation. In conclusion, this study is to determine the correlation of human concentration gazing at space images. It is an exploratory research on research methodologies, and aims to develop methodologies and provide basic data to plan attractive spaces in light of the subconscious of consumers in the future by interpreting gaze data related to concentration.

도시지역 성인의 농촌치유관광 음식 특성 선호도 조사 (Survey on Food Characteristic Preferences for Rural Healing Tourism for Adults in Urban Areas)

  • This study was conducted to investigate food needs for dining out in the context of rural healing tourism by surveying food preference characteristics. A total of 600 adults in an urban area completed an online questionnaire on food characteristics for rural healing tourism. Regarding the purpose of rural healing tourism, 61.2% of respondents answered 'relaxation' while 6.3% answered 'promotion of health'. Exactly 66.3% of respondents selected Korean foods (rice) as the preferable food type for dining out in the context of rural healing tourism. Respondents considered 'regionality' and 'ingredient' as more important among food quality characteristics, whereas 'professionality' was less important. Females perceived 'nutrition' and 'cooking' as more important than males. Among food characteristics of professionality, regionality, and traditionality, respondents most preferred 'using regional specialty food'. Preference for 'using traditional food' significantly increased with subject's age. Respondents rated 'balanced nutrition' most highly among food characteristics of health and nutrition. 'Seasonal food' was the most preferred food characteristic among cooking and ingredients. Females showed higher interest in nutrition, cooking, and ingredients and higher preferences related to food characteristics of nutrition, cooking, and ingredients than males. In conclusion, Korean foods (rice) or Korean full course menu items using local specialty foods or seasonal foods with balanced nutrition are needed for dining out in the context of rural healing tourism.

청소년들의 독서동기 요인으로서 북트레일러의 효용성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effectiveness of Book Trailers as an Element of Reading Motivation for Teenagers)

  • 현대사회의 청소년은 책을 많이 읽지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이들을 독서활동으로 유인하기 위한 기초적 조사로 청소년의 독서동기에 미치는 북트레일러의 효용성을 조사하였다. 이를 위해 (1) 독서와 북트레일러에 대한 기본적 인식, (2) 북트레일러 시청 후의 인식, (3) AIDMA & AISAS 하위요소에 적용한 독자행동반응에 관한 설문을 마련하고, 중고등학교 학생 121명을 대상으로 조사하였다. 그 결과 청소년의 독서동기에서 북트레일러가 서평과 같은 인쇄매체보다 훨씬 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 선호하는 북트레일러 유형은 스토리전개형으로, 선호하는 북트레일러의 구성요소는 책의 줄거리, 배경음악, 영상효과 순으로 나타났다. 또한 청소년 독자행동반응을 조사한 결과 책에 대한 관심과 흥미, 책에 대한 기억, 책을 읽고 싶은 욕구와 정보검색, 북트레일러 제작 등 모든 영역에서 매우 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 북트레일러가 독서동기부여 및 독서표현활동으로 매우 효과적으로 활용될 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 결과이다.

대학생들의 건강관련 요인이 커피와 전통음료의 기호도와 섭취빈도에 미치는 영향 (The Preference and Frequency of Beverages related to Health Factor in University Students)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of the health related factors on the preference and frequency of intake of coffee and traditional beverages among 280 university students (128 males and 152 females) who were residing in Incheon areas. The results were as follows; 1. Male students of over weight and obese were more than female students and female students of under weight were more than male students. Female students were interested in weight control and had an experience in weight control more than male students. 2. The group who was much interested in weight control preferred green tea, yuja tea and dunggulre tea. The group who was much interested in health when drink beverages preferred green tea, ginseng tea, dunggulre tea, vinegar drinks and water but didn’t prefer coffee. 3. The frequency of intake of green tea is high in the group who had an experience in weight control. And the frequency of intake of honey tea was high in the group who drank alcohol almost every day. Coffee intake was the highest among beverages in smokers and water intake was the highest among beverages in nonsmokers. In conclusion this study showed that as an interest in health is higher, the preference and frequency of intake of coffee was low whereas those who intake of traditional beverages was high in general.

조리실습에 대한 인식 조사를 기반으로 한 조리교육 활성화 방안 연구 (Identifying the Best Approach to Revitalize High School Culinary Education Curriculum in Korea)

  • The aim of this study was to identify the most effective methods with which to revitalize Korean high school culinary education. To achieve this aim, a culinary recognition questionnaire survey of 616 students from 9 culinary high schools was carried out. The 9 surveyed schools represented the following of 7 regions: Chungnam, Busan, Incheon, Daegue, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk, and Gwangju. Collected data were subjected to descriptive analysis, $x^2$-test, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using SPSS(version 14.0). The results of this study are as follows. Culinary practice interest and learning demand of most students were high. 6.8% of students indicated that initial theory learning, followed by video education, and finally live demonstration is an effective teaching methodology. They preferred practicing on actual ingredients as the primary teaching and learning method, nominating technician cooking as the most favorite. As for areas needing improvement in culinary practice education, difficulties with material preparation and insufficient learning hours were identified as prominent factors by 66.8% of respondents. There was unanimous agreement that culinary practice education can be enhanced by highly skilled teachers, while interest for the discipline itself can be fostered by initiating and encouraging cooking participation in the home. Freshmen and special high school students suggested that a cooking related website is necessary to expand the current information interface, which is currently limited to colleagues and employers. In relation to culinary education revitalization, consistent promotion of departments, or high schools that have proven student satisfaction rates and effective culinary curriculum are required. Furthermore, teachers can also aid this process by more effective student pastoral care in order to improve school life satisfaction. However, teacher job satisfaction is an important component of this process, and better employment conditions and remuneration packages reflecting extra work must be considered as part of an attractive teacher-incentive employment policy.

Clinical application of cryolipolysis in Asian patients for subcutaneous fat reduction and body contouring

  • Background Cryolipolysis, a preferred method for minimally invasive body contouring, involves the noninvasive cooling of adipocytes to induce lipolysis without damaging other tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cryolipolysis for the treatment of excessive fat tissue. Methods Between May 2014 and December 2017, 231 patients with 448 areas of interest were enrolled and their records were retrospectively reviewed. We used five different vacuum applicators, and the best-fitting applicator was used for each area. One cycle of cryolipolysis was applied at a cooling intensity factor of 41.6. The efficacy was evaluated 12 weeks after treatment via review of clinical photographs, the pinch test, and ultrasonographic measurements of fat thickness. The occurrence of any complications was also assessed. Results The volume was reduced in all of the areas to which cryolipolysis was applied. The rate of reduction of the fat layer as measured via the pinch test was 19.2%, and the rate of the decrease in fat layer thickness as measured via ultrasonography was 22.8%. Fat reduction of the upper arm differed significantly from that of the abdomen and flank, but no significant difference was found between sexes. The side effects were limited to erythema, edema, bruising, and numbness at the treatment site and resolved without treatment. Conclusions Cryolipolysis, with new and better-fitting applicators, is safe, fast, and effective for the reduction of excessive fat tissue on the abdomen, back, flank, and extremities. It is a good option for treating excess adipose tissue in Asian patients.

과학영재학교 학생들의 정보요구 및 정보이용행태에 관한 연구 (Information Needs and Information Seeking Behaviors of Students in the Science School for Gifted)

  • 본 연구는 과학영재학교 재학생을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하여 정보요구와 정보이용행태를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 선행연구를 바탕으로 연구를 설계하고, 전국 8개의 과학영재학교 중 6개 학교에 재학 중인 10명의 학생들을 대상으로 반구조화된 면담을 진행하여 정보요구와 정보이용행태 전반을 탐색하였다. 과학영재학교 학생들의 정보요구를 교과 활동과 교과 외 활동 영역으로 확인할 수 있었고, 학생들의 주요 관심 주제인 수업 및 학습, 연구 활동에서의 정보이용행태를 ISP 모형 기반으로 살펴보았다. 정보 이용의 전 과정에서 선호정보원을 파악하고, 이를 종합하여 과학영재학교 학생들의 정보이용행태의 특이점과 시사점을 논의하였다. 본 연구는 영재학교 도서관 연구를 위한 기초자료로 사용되며, 과학 주제 분야에 심화적인 관심과 재능이 있는 학생들을 위한 서비스를 제공하기 위한 자료로도 활용할 수 있는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

교사와 학생의 사회적-과학적 쟁점(Socio-Scientific Issues) 주제 선호도 분석 (A Comparative Study of Teachers' and Students' Preference of Socio-Scientific Issues Topics)

  • 이 연구에서는 초등, 중, 고등학교의 학생과 교사가 선호하는 SSI 주제를 조사하여 학교급별 학생과 교사가 선호하는 SSI 주제의 유사성을 코사인 유사도 측정을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 대상은 초, 중, 고등학생 566명, 교사의 327명이었다. SSI 관련 선행연구 논문과 프로그램에 포함된 SSI 주제 60개를 환경, 과학기술, 보건·의학, 기타 사회 문제 영역로 구분하고 목록화하여, 연구 대상인 학생 또는 교사가 선호하는 주제 5개를 선택하도록 하였다. 자료수집은 서베이몽키를 이용한 온라인으로 진행하였고, 수집된 자료는 학생 및 교사별로 6개 집단으로 구분하고, 집단별로 주제의 선택 빈도를 조사하였다. 그리고 선택된 주제의 빈도를 기준으로 벡터 값을 계산하고, 학교급별 학생 간, 교사 간, 교사와 학생 간의 코사인 유사도를 측정하여 주제 선호 유사도를 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생의 학교급별 집단간 SSI 선호 주제 유사도는 중학생과 고등학생 사이의 코사인 유사도(0.982)가 초등학생과 중학생간(0.651) 또는 초등학생과 고등학생간(0.662)의 코사인유사도보다 높았다. 둘째, 교사의 학교급별 집단간 SSI 선호 주제 유사도는 초등, 중, 고등학교간의 모든 비교 집단에서 비교적 비슷한 코사인 유사도의 양상을 보였다. 셋째, 학생과 교사간 학교급별 SSI 선호 주제 유사도는 초등학교 학생과 교사 집단간 코사인 유사도(0.974)가 다른 학교급의 비교 집단, 중학교급(0.621) 또는 고등학교급(0.645)보다 높았다. 즉 초등학교의 학생과 교사는 서로 선호하는 SSI 주제가 73.33%의 수준에서 유사하고, 반면, 중학교 또는 고등학교의 학생과 교사는 서로 선호하는 주제가 33% 수준으로 유사한 경향을 보였다. SSI 교육에서 학생에게 관심 있는 주제로 접근하는 것은 학습 동기 유발과 지속, 그리고 즐거운 학습 경험과 학습에 대한 긍정적인 태도 형성과 긴밀하게 연관된다. 따라서, SSI 수업을 설계할 때, 학생 관심의 관점에서 주제를 검토해야 할 것이다. 특히 교사가 학생의 선호도와 다소 차이가 있는 SSI 주제를 선별한 경우, 그 차이를 극복할 수 있는 치밀한 교수 설계가 필요할 것이다.
