A Study on Development of a Prediction Model for the Sound Pressure Level Related to Vehicle Velocity by Measuring NCPX Measurement (NCPX 계측 방법에 따른 속도별 소음 데시벨 예측 모델 개발에 대한 연구)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to provide for the overall SPL (Sound Pressure Level) prediction model by using the NCPX (Noble Close Proximity) measurement method in terms of regression equations. METHODS: Many methods can be used to measure the traffic noise. However, NCPX measurement can powerfully measure the friction noise originated somewhere between tire and pavement by attaching the microphone at the proximity location of tire. The overall SPL(Sound Pressure Level) calculated by NCPX method depends on the vehicle speed, and the basic equation form of the prediction model for overall SPL was used, according to the previous studies (Bloemhof, 1986; Cho and Mun, 2008a; Cho and Mun, 2008b; Cho and Mun, 2008c). RESULTS : After developing the prediction model, the prediction model was verified by the correlation analysis and RMSE (Root Mean Squared Error). Furthermore, the correlation was resulted in good agreement. CONCLUSIONS: If the polynomial overall SPL prediction model can be used, the special cautions are required in terms of considering the interpolation points between vehicle speeds as well as overall SPLs.

  • Carbonation is one of the major deterioration factors for concrete. So. lots of researchers have proposed the equations for determining carbonated depth and the initial time of steel corrosion due to carbonation to predict the service life of concrete structures. However, there are large gaps among the equations for predicting carbonation because each researcher has different considering factors to predict carbonation depth. So, in this study, we calculated the deviations of the proposed equations for carbonation, and we calculated each researcher different corrosion initiation time. However, it has a lot of deviation. Therefore, we evaluated the probability of steel corrosion considering each deviation using MCS, an analysis method based on probability theory. In the results, we have proposed much advanced information for determining service life of reinforced concrete structures due to carbonation.

  • Numerical investigation on the dynamic stall over an oscillating airfoil is presented. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are coupled with transition transport equations for the natural transition. Computational results considering the turbulent transition are compared with the fully turbulent computations and the experimental data. Results with transition prediction show closer correlation with the experimental data than those with the fully turbulent assumption, especially in the reattachment region.

  • By using literature data, the empirical equations have been derived which describe the interrelationships of explosion and other related properties of n-alcohols. The properties which have been correlated data are : lower and upper explosive limits, heats of combustion, carbon numbers. Also, the new equation for predicting the temperature dependence of lower explosive limits(LEL) of n-alcohols on the basis of explosive limits, heats of combustion, flame propagation theory and mathematical method is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. From a given explosive properties. by using the proposed equations, it is possible to predict the other properties. It is hoped eventually that this method will permit the estimation of the explosive properties of alcohol with improved accuracy and the broader application for other compounds.

Dynamic Analysis of Harmonically Excited Non-Linear Structure System Using Harmonic Balance Method

  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.

Aeroacoustic Tonal Noise Prediction of Cross-Flow Fan by a Hydrodynamic-Acoustic Splitting Method (유동-음향 분리 기법에 의한 횡류홴의 공력 소음 예측)

  • Acoustic pressure field around the cross-flow fan is predicted by a hydrodynamic-acoustic splitting method. Unsteady flow field is obtained by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using an unstructured finite-volume method on the triangular meshes, while the acoustic waves generated inside the cross-flow fan are predicted by solving the perturbed compressible equations(PCE) with a 6th-order compact finite difference method. Computational results show that the acoustic waves of BPF tone are generated by interactions of the blades wakes with the stabilizer, which then are reflected from the rear-guider and mainly propagate towards the fan inlet. Also, a directivity of BPF noise predicted by the PCE is noticeably different from that of the FW-H equations, in which a fan casing effect cannot be included.

  • In this paper, the Gauge-Uzawa methods for the Darcy-Brinkman equations driven by temperature and salt concentration (DBTC) are proposed. The first order backward difference formula is adopted to approximate the time derivative term, and the linear term is treated implicitly, the nonlinear terms are treated semi-implicit. In each time step, the coupling elliptic problems of velocity, temperature and salt concentration are solved, and then the pressure is solved. The unconditional stability and error estimations of the first order semi-discrete scheme are derived, at the same time, the unconditional stability of the first order fully discrete scheme is obtained. Some numerical experiments verify the theoretical prediction and show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Assessment of Dryout Heat Flux Correlations for Particle Beds

  • To assess the coolability of particle bed, which is formed in reactor cavity, it is important to assess the prediction capabilities of Dryout Heat flux correlations. The existing DHF correlations (Sowa et al., Dhir-Catton (a), Dhir-Catton (b), Hardee-Nilson, Ostesen, Shires-Stevens, Lipinski, Jones et al., Dhir-Barleon, Theofanous-Saito, Henry-Fauske) for particle beds are assessed using developed DHF database. Eleven DHF correlations are chosen for assessment based on literature survey. Among them, five are based on flooding correlation, which are used for chemical engineering and others are based on conservation equations. The parameters in DHF correlations are directly substituted into correlations. Totally 202 data are classified into 6 groups based on bed thickness and particle diameter. In each group, prediction capabilities of correlations are assessed and shown by standard deviation and root mean square (RMS) error. Prediction capability of each correlation depends on the data group and none of correlations shows best prediction capability on entire groups. According to present study, even if those correlations show poor prediction capability, Lipinski correlation is best correlation considering entire groups.
