  • The local preconditioning method has both robust convergence and accurate solutions by using local flow properties for parameters in the preconditioning matrix. Preconditioning methods have been very effective to low speed inviscid flows. In the viscous and turbulent flows, deterioration of convergence should be overcame on the high aspect ratio grids to get better convergence and accuracy. In the present study, the local time stepping and min-CFL/max-VNN definitions are applied to compare the results and we propose the method that switches between two methods. The min-CFL definition is applied for inviscid flow problems and the min-CFL/max-VNN definition is implemented to viscous and turbulent flow problems.

  • A new preconditioning method is investigated to reduce the roundoff error in computing derivatives using Chebyshev col-location methods(CCM). Using this preconditioning causes ration of roundoff error of preconditioning method and CCm becomes small when N gets large. Also for accuracy enhancement of differentiation we use a domain decomposition approach. Error analysis shows that for this domain decomposition method error reduces proportional to the length of subintervals. Numerical results show that using domain decomposition and preconditioning simultaneously gives super accu-rate approximate values for first derivative of the function and good approximate values for moderately high derivatives.

  • A temperature preconditioning that modulates the derivative of density with respect to temperature is proposed to improve the convergence characteristics of the preconditioned Euler equations. Flows in a two-dimensional channel with a 10% circular bump in the middle of the channel were calculated at different speeds. The numerical dissipation terms of the Roe’s FDS scheme according to the temperature preconditioning are derived. It is shown that the temperature preconditioning accelerates convergence of the preconditioned Euler equations.

  • Time marching methods are well-suited for high speed compressible flow computations. However, it is well known that the time marching methods suffer a slow down in convergence due to disparity in Eigenvalues. A local preconditioning method is one of numerical methods to enhance convergence characteristics of low mach number flows by modifying Eigenvalues of the governing equations. In this paper, the local preconditioning method of Weiss is applied to a 2 dimensional Navier-Stokes code and the efficiency of the preconditioning method is shown through a number of computational examples.

  • Effect of ischemic preconditioning on left ventricular function after cardiac arrest in isolated rat heart.Ischemic preconditioning reduces infarct size caused by sustained ischemia. However, the effects of preconditioning on post ischemic cardiac function are not well-known. The objective of the present study was to determine whether preconditioning would improve the recovery of left ventricular functions after cardiac arrest in isolated rat heart model.Isolated rat hearts were allowed to equilibrate for 20 minutes and were then subjected to either 5 minutes of global, normothermic transient ischemia [Group 2 and 4] or not [Group 3]. A stabilization period of perfusion lasting 5 minutes after the termination of transient ischemia was followed by a standard global, normothermic 20 minute-ischemia and 35-minute reperfusion challenge [Group 3 and 4]. These following results were odtained.1. The recovery of left ventricular developed pressures showed no significant differences between Group 3 and Group 4 at 50 [P>0.3] and 85 minute [P>0.2].2. Heart rates showed no significant differences throughout all the course of experiment and between groups [P>0.5].3. The recovery of left ventricular maximum dP/dt showed no significant differences between Group 3 and Group 4 at 50 [P>0.1] and 85 minute [P>0.2].4. The recovery of pressure-rate products showed no significant differences between Group3 and Group 4 at 50 [P>0.5] and 85 minute [P>0.1].These results suggest that ischemic preconditioning does not provide significant benefit for the postischemic left ventricular functions in isolated rat hearts.

  • Background Ischemic preconditioning has been shown to improve the outcomes of hypoxic tolerance of the heart, brain, lung, liver, jejunum, skin, and muscle tissues. However, to date, no report of ischemic preconditioning on vascularized bone grafts has been published. Methods Sixteen rabbits were divided into four groups with ischemic times of 2, 6, 14, and 18 hours. Half of the rabbits in each group underwent ischemic preconditioning. The osteomyocutaneous flaps consisted of the tibia bone, from which the overlying muscle and skin were raised. The technique of ischemic preconditioning involved applying a vascular clamp to the pedicle for 3 cycles of 10 minutes each. The rabbits then underwent serial plain radiography and computed tomography imaging on the first, second, fourth, and sixth postoperative weeks. Following this, all of the rabbits were sacrificed and histological examinations were performed. Results The results showed that for clinical analysis of the skin flaps and bone grafts, the preconditioned groups showed better survivability. In the plain radiographs, except for two non-preconditioned rabbits with intraoperative ischemic times of 6 hours, all began to show early callus formation at the fourth week. The computed tomography findings showed more callus formation in the preconditioned groups for all of the ischemic times except for the 18- hour group. The histological findings correlated with the radiological findings. There was no statistical significance in the difference between the two groups. Conclusions In conclusion, ischemic preconditioning improved the survivability of skin flaps and increased callus formation during the healing process of vascularized bone grafts.

  • The protective effect of'ischemic preconditioning'on ischemid-reperfusion injury of heart has been reported in various animal species. but without known mechAnism in detail, In An attempt to investigate the cardioprotective mechanism of ischemic preconditioning, we examined the effects of nitric oxide(UO) synthesis in preconditioned heart of rat The isolated hearts perfused by Langendorfr's method were ex- posed to 30min global ischemia followed by 30min reperfusion with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit(K-H) sol- ution. Ischemic preconditioning was performed with three episodes of Sm n ischemia and Smin repeyfusion before the induction of prolong ischemia(30min)-reperfusion(30min). Ischemic preconditioning prevented the depression of cardiac function(left ventricular pressure .K heart rate) observed in the ischemia- reperfusion hearts and reduced the release of lactate dehydrogenase during the reperfusion period. On electromicroscopic pictures, myocardial ultrastructures wore relatively well preserved in isthemic preconditioned hearts. N6_nitro-L-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME) an inhibitor of L-arginine citric oxide pathway, was infused at a rate O.Smllmin In a dose of 10mg kg-1 before the initial ischemic preconditioning. neither the protection of cardiac function nor the reduction of LDH releAse in ischemic preconditioning hearts was altered in the presence of added L-NAME On ultrastructural finding, the preservation of morphology in ischemic preconditioning heart was not change by the pretreatment of L-UAME. The failure of the WO synthesis inhibitor to reduce t e effect of ischemic preconditioning may be related to be species specific in that NO may allot be the trigger for ischemic preconditioning in rats.

  • A preconditioning technique is presented for a simultaneous solution to wind-membrane interaction. In the simultaneous equations, a linear elastic model was employed to deal with the fluid-structure data transfer at the interface. A Lagrange multiplier was introduced to impose the specified boundary conditions at the interface and strongly coupled simultaneous equations are derived after space and time discretization. An initial linear elastic model preconditioner and modified one were derived by treating the linearized elastic model equation as a saddle point problem, respectively. Accordingly, initial and modified fluid-structure interaction (FSI) preconditioner for the simultaneous equations were derived based on the initial and modified linear elastic model preconditioners, respectively. Wind-membrane interaction analysis by the proposed preconditioners, for two and three dimensional membranous structures respectively, was performed. Comparison was made between the performance of initial and modified preconditioners by comparing parameters such as iteration numbers, relative residuals and convergence in FSI computation. The results show that the proposed preconditioning technique greatly improves calculation accuracy and efficiency. The priority of the modified FSI preconditioner is verified. The proposed preconditioning technique provides an efficient solution procedure and paves the way for practical application of simultaneous solution for wind-structure interaction computation.

  • We analyse in this paper the possibility of using preconditioning techniques as for square non-singular systems, also in the case of inconsistent least-squares problems. We find conditions in which the minimal norm solution of the preconditioned least-wquares problem equals that of the original prblem. We also find conditions such that thd Kaczmarz-Extendid algorithm with relaxation parameters (analysed by the author in [4]), cna be adapted to the preconditioned least-squares problem. In the last section of the paper we present numerical experiments, with two variants of preconditioning, applied to an inconsistent linear least-squares model probelm.

  • A numerical method using dual time stepping and preconditioning procedure for efficient computations of unsteady low speed compressible flow problems is developed. The time-derivative preconditioning method which is valid at low speed flow conditions cannot maintain temporal accuracy because of the modification of the time-derivative term in Navier-Stokes equations. The dual time stepping procedure is incorporated to enable the time accurate computations and this procedure introduces a pseudo-time derivative in addition to the physical time derivative. At a given physical time, an inner iteration can be carried out until a steady state in pseudo-time is achieved. This will effectively yield a time accurate solution. Computational capabilities of the above algorithm are demonstrated through computation of a variety of practical fluid flows and it is shown that the algorithms is efficient in the essentially incompressible flows and low Mach number compressible flows with heat source.
