  • The prestressing force introduced to the tendon in pretensioned concrete members is transferred by direct bond between tendon and concrete, which requires a proper estimation of stress transfer length. The use of pretensiond and/or precast members with UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) may give many advantages in quality control. This paper presents an experiment to estimate the stress transfer length of UHPC for various compressive strength levels of UHPC, cover depths, diameters of tendons and tensioning forces. According to the result of this experiment, the stress transfer length of UHPC member is much reduced comparing that of normal strength concrete. The reduction in stress transfer length of UHPC may come from the high bond strength capacity of UHPC. The transfer lengths obtained from this experiment are compared to those in current design code and a new formula is proposed.

  • This study reports the interfacial bond strength between Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and Normal Strength Concrete (NSC). While previous studies have focused on the interfacial strength between NSC substrate and UHPC overlay, this study use precast UHPC for enhanced constructability and replacement of formwork. The factors affecting the interface strength are comprehensively reviewed. It can be classified into: interface shape, degree of hardening and moisture condition of UHPC before combining with NSC, and curing condition of composite materials. Conducted experiments verify the effects of each factor on the interface strength and, accordingly show different failure modes. In particular, a new failure mode of the failure of a part of UHPC was firstly found in the case of sample with rough interface between UHPC and NSC. The other factors of the degree of hardening and the moisture and curing conditions of UHPC were discussed. This research will provide a valuable foundation to utilize the UHPC as a composite material.

  • Retaining walls are used to prevent excessive movement of retained soils. Typical retaining walls include gravity, reinforced concrete, reinforced earth and tie-back. However, from a practical viewpoint there are still drawbacks among these often constructed retaining walls. New types of retaining walls constructed with precast concrete blocks are proposed. This type of retaining wall is incorporates each blocks interconnected with adjacent block by connecting unit to build up a flexible retaining-wall system. This paper focus to behavior characteristics includes deformation and distribution of lateral earth pressure by loading tests and FEM analysis. For model tests, a 1/10 scale reduce models are manufactured include unevenness part, drainage hole and connecting unit and steel wire used to connect each blocks with adjacent block. To simulate the real retaining walls closely, uneven parts are interconnected each other and the construction type of blocks and wall front inclination are varied to investigate the relative displacement of individual block and the location of maximum deformation of wall as increasing surcharging. Additionally, PENTAGON3D, which solve the geotechnical and other problem, used for verifying and comparing with model tests.

  • This study on the elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell by rigia element method is classified into two parts : (1) theoretical consideration on elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell, (2) elastic and elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell with the open stiff ring. In 1982, Y. Tsuboi proposed the new analytical method which is called the rigid element method, for analyzing the elasto-plastic behavior of wall-type precast concrete structures by applying the concepts of rigid bodies-sprins model (i.e., when structures reach their ultimate state of leading, they may be yield, collapsed ana crushed into pieces, and each part or piece of structures mar move like a rigid body.). In this paper, for improvement and expansion this rigid element method, it is proposed the adaptation equation of rectangular-shaped spherical element and rectangular-shaped spherical bending element developed by present authors, and the analytical procedure for the elastic and the elasto-plastic increment method of structures.

  • In this study, Interaction among each element was construed by the unit of new stiffness matrix to analyze the finite element about Japanese precast concrete slab track and improved slab track. Dynamic analysis which is assumed a static analysis and a trainload on the transverse and the longitudinal load of the train into a series periodic function was performed by using the common program. And then, the difference of the movement between an improved section and an existing structure type was realized. Longitudinal static analysis indicated that the stress of the improved section is smaller than that of the protrusion of the existing slab track. And static and dynamic analysis on transverse load showed a little decrease of the displacement on new slab track. But the dynamic analysis result showed that new track system was considerably decreased by 30% compared with the existing Japanese slab track.

  • Recently there are many attempts to introduce PC construction method in buildings. But the study on PC structural wall has been made progress so slowly because it is very difficult to develop new items. In this study, we have developed new vertical joint on PC wall in order to upgrade constructivity and structural performance of the existing connections, then we have evaluated the seismic resistance performance. As a result of the cyclic loading tests for two specimens, proposed vertical joint on PC wall has shown that it behave the excellent structural performance in comparison to PC wall having no joint. Therefore, we think that proposed vertical joint is the system to apply buliding structure.

  • Exodermic deck systems are new composite steel grid deck systems which have been used in various projects during the past decade. One of the eminent features of this system is considerable reduction in the structure weight compared to the ordinary reinforced concrete decks and also reduction in construction time by using precast Exodermic decks. In this study, dynamic properties of the Exodermic deck bridges with alternative perfobond shear connectors are investigated experimentally. In order to evaluate the dynamic properties of the decks, peak picking and Nyquist circle fit methods are employed. Frequencies obtained experimentally are in good agreement with the results of the finite-element solution, and the experimental results show that the first mode is the most effective mode among the obtained modes. The first four modes are the rigid translational motion modes, and the next two modes seem to be rigid rotational motion modes around a horizontal axis. From the 7th mode onwards, modes are flexible. The range of damping ratios is about 0.5%. Furthermore, the static behavior of the Exodermic decks under a static load applied at the center of the decks was investigated. Failure of the decks under positive bending was punching-shear. The bending strength of the decks under negative bending was about 50 percent of their strength under positive bending. In addition, the weight of an Exodermic deck is about 40% of that of an equivalent reinforced concrete slab.

  • In order to improve the workability in erecting Precast Concrete (PC) members and enhance the seismic resistance capacity of the joints in PC moment frames, a new PC column and its construction process are introduced in this paper. This column is manufactured by centrifugal force in keeping the hollow tube inside; the hollow is little bit wide and the grout can be poured from top to bottom after erection at site so that more compact grouting is possible in horizontal joint. The repeated cyclic loading test for four full scaled specimens was conducted to evaluate the seismic resistance capacity of the joint designed by the proposed system. For the continuity of main reinforcements in column, two connecting methods are used in designing specimens; one is to use mechanical connector and other is lab splice. From the cyclic lateral loading test, it was found that the seismic capacity of the developed PC column joint is comparable to that of monolithic joint.

  • Prefabricated bridge substructures provide new possibility for designers in terms of efficiency of creativity, fast construction, geometry control and cost. Even though prefabricated bridge columns are widely adopted as a substructure system in the bridge construction project recently, lack of deeper understanding of the seismic behavior of prefabricated bridge substructures cause much concern on their performance in high seismic zones. In this paper, experimental research works are presented to verify enhanced design concepts of prefabricated bridge piers. Integration of precast segments was done with continuity of axial prestressing tendons and mild reinforcing bars throughout the construction joints. Cyclic tests were conducted to investigate the effects of the design parameters on seismic performance. An analytical method for moment-curvature analysis of prefabricated bridge columns is conducted in this study. The method is validated through comparison with experimental results and the fiber model analysis. A parametric study is conducted to observe the seismic behavior of prefabricated bridge columns using the analytical study based on strain compatibility method. The effects of continuity of axial steel and tendon, and initial prestressing level on the load-displacement response characteristics, i.e., the strain of axial mild steels and posttensioned tendon at fracture and concrete crushing strain at the extreme compression fiber are investigated. The analytical study shows the layout of axial mild steels and posttensioned tendons in this experiment is the optimized arrangement for seismic performance.
