Recently, patent images are growing importance and thus patent image retrieval is a growing area of research. However, most existing patent image retrieval systems use edges extracted in the images, whose performance is affected by the quality of edge detection in the image pre-processing step. To overcome this disadvantage, we propose a SURF-based patent image retrieval method which uses the morphological characteristics of the images. The proposed method detects SURF interest points with directions and computes regional histograms. We apply the proposed method to a patent image database with 2000 binary images and we show the proposed retrieval system achieves excellent results, even when the images have some loss or degradation.
Topographical images such as aerial and satellite images are usually similar with respect to colors and textures but not in shapes. Thus shape features of the images and the methods of extracting them become critical for effective image retrieval from topographical image databases. In this paper, we propose a shape feature extraction method for topographical image retrieval. The method extracts a set of attributes which can model the presence of holes and disconnected regions in images and is tolerant to pre-processing, more specifically segmentation, errors. Various experiments suggest that retrieval using attributes extracted using the proposed method performs better than using existing shape feature extraction methods.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 9, which is currently located at 155°E geostationary orbits, has transmitted earth observation data acquired by imager to CDA at NOAA. After the acquisition on ground, observation data are corrected on ground and re-transmitted to GOES-9 for the dissemination to users. In this paper, the procedure and result from raw data acquisition and pre-processing for earth observation imagery retrieval from GOES-9 Raw data acquired in Korea at May 2005 are introduced.

Fuzzy information retrieval which uses the concept of fuzzy relation is able to retrieve documents in the way based on not morphology but semantics, dissimilar to traditional information retrieval theories. Fuzzy information retrieval logically consists of three sets : the set of documents, the set of terms and the set of queries. It maintains a fuzzy relational matrix which describes the relationship between documents and terms and creates a thesaurus with fuzzy relational product. It also provides the user with documents which are relevant to his query. However, there are some problems on building a thesaurus with fuzzy relational product such that it has big time complexity and it uses fuzzy values to be processed with flating-point. Actually, fuzzy values have to be expressed and processed with floating-point. However, floating-point operations have complex logics and make the system be slow. If it is possible to exchange fuzzy values with binary values, we could expect sp eding up building the thesaurus. In addition, binary value expressions require just a bit of memory space, but floating -point expression needs couple of bytes. In this study, we suggest a new method of building a thesaurus, which accelerates the operation of the system by pre-applying an ${\alpha}$-cut. The experiments show the improvement of performance and reliability of the system.
We propose an efficient method for content-based ultrasound image retrieval using magnitude frequency spectra and implement a retrieval system based on the proposed method. The target images are ultrasound images of adult organs. Trained users often acquire such images so that images of the same kind of organs are very similar, although their locations may not exactly coincide. Therefore, the magnitude frequency spectrum, which has a translation-invariant property, is used as a feature. All the object images in the image DB is pre-classified in the same kind organs. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to some well-known conventional methods.

In this paper, we introduce two retrieval methods for photos with speech documents. We compare the pattern of speech query with those of speech documents recorded in digital cameras, and measure the similarities, and retrieve photos corresponding to the speech documents which have high similarity scores. As the first approach, a phoneme recognition scheme is used as the pre-processor for the pattern matching, and in the second one, the vector quantization (VQ) and the dynamic time warping (DTW) are applied to match the speech query with the documents in signal domain itself. Experimental results show that the performance of the first approach is highly dependent on that of phoneme recognition while the processing time is short. The second method provides a great improvement of performance. While the processing time is longer than that of the first method due to DTW, but we can reduce it by taking approximated methods.
Recently, the necessity of systems which effectively store and retrieve video data has increased. Conventional video retrieval systems retrieve data using menus or text based keywords. Due to the lack of information, many video clips are simultaneously searched, and the user must have a certain level of knowledge to utilize the system. In this paper, we suggest a natural language based conversational video retrieval system that reflects users' intentions and includes more information than keyword based queries. This system can also retrieve from events or people to their movements. First, an event database is constructed based on meta-data which are generated by domain analysis for collected video in an office environment. Then, a script database is also constructed based on the query pre-processing and analysis. From that, a method to retrieve a video through a matching technique between natural language queries and answers is suggested and validated through performance and process evaluation for 10 users The natural language based retrieval system has shown its better efficiency in performance and user satisfaction than the menu based retrieval system.

According to the recent advances of digital encoding technologies and computing power, large amounts of multimedia informations such as image, graphic, audio and video are fully used in multimedia systems through Internet. By this, diverse retrieval mechanisms are required for users to search dedicated informations stored in multimedia systems, and especially it is preferred to use contents-based retrieval method rather than text-type keyword retrieval method. In this paper, we propose a new contents-based indexing and searching algorithm which aims to get both high efficiency and high retrieval performance. To achieve these objectives, firstly the proposed algorithm classifies images by a pre-processing process of edge extraction, range division, and multiple filtering, and secondly it searches the target images using spatial and textural characteristics of colors, which are extracted from the previous process, in a image. In addition, we describe the simulation results of search requests and retrieval outputs for several images of company's trade-mark using the proposed contents-based retrieval algorithm based on wavelet.

This paper proposes the noise robust algorithm to detect the starting point of music. Detection of starting point of music is necessary to solve computational-waste problem and retrieval-comparison problem with inconsistent input data in music content based retrieval system. In particular, such detection is even more necessary in time sequential retrieval method that compares data in the sequential order of time in contents based music retrieval system. Whereas it has the long point that the retrieval is fast since it executes simple comparison in the order of time, time sequential retrieval method has the short point that data starting time to be compared should be the same. However, digitalized music cannot guarantee the equity of starting time by bit rate conversion. Therefore, this paper ensured that recognition rate shall not decrease even while executing high speed retrieval by applying time sequential retrieval method through detection of music starting point in the pre-processing stage of retrieval. Starting point detection used minimum wave model that can detect effective sound, and for strength against noise, the noises existing in mute sound were swapped. The proposed algorithm was confirmed to produce about 38% more excellent performance than the results to which starting point detection was not applied, and was verified for the strength against noise.
In this paper, we present a hybrid approach which incorporates color, texture and shape in content-based image retrieval. Colors in each image are clustered into a small number of representative colors. The feature descriptor consists of the representative colors and their percentages in the image. A similarity measure similar to the cumulative color histogram distance measure is defined for this descriptor. The co-occurrence matrix as a statistical method is used for texture analysis. An optimal set of five statistical functions are extracted from the co-occurrence matrix of each image, in order to render the feature vector for eachimage maximally informative. The edge information captured within edge histograms is extracted after a pre-processing phase that performs color transformation, quantization, and filtering. The features where thus extracted and stored within feature vectors and were later compared with an intersection-based method. The content-based retrieval system is tested to be effective in terms of retrieval and scalability through experimental results and precision-recall analysis.
