  • Science-Technology-Society curricula have been developed in several countries for the last 20 years. Those curricula were focused on social aspects of science, i.e., value-laden knowledge and scientific enterprise, and society-related scientific and technological issues, i.e., energy, pollution, natural resources. The major teaching models employed in those curricula were problem solving and decision making, which required the following teaching techniques: teacher as a manager, small group discussion, controversy as a motivational force for substantive learning, and sufficient factual information into the discussion. Further researches are to be made to ascertain whether or not the expectations of the curricula might be realized in practice. It was shown that most Korean biology teachers considered the STS-related goal of science education as more important than the other goals. Based upon the findings, some recommendations for development of Korean STS curriculum were made as follows: 1. The contents of the STS curricula are to be organized with the integrated mode; 2. The major teaching models throughout the contents are to be problem solving and decision making. These are considered to provide students with the opportunities to involve in debates on practical issues and to draw consensus from them; 3. Some degree of flexibility should be provided on teachers' implementation of the curriculum in terms of contents, teaching techniques etc.; 4. To increase the practicality of the curriculum, teachers should be involved in the development of the curriculum and the relevant research; and 5. Contents to be included in STS curriculum were suggested by some science educators, but the more systematic study is required in this respect.

  • The Quality of human living depends on the environmental quality of the region sustaining the life. The environmental deterioration of the modern society is due to mechanical environmentalism. For the better quality of the life, The changes of recognition and attitude on the environments are required. These changes of mind are also important in environmental education for teenagers. The 7th national curriculum, officially anounced December 1998, focuses on the change of attitude to environments and practical behavior in real life for “Environments”, the environmental education curriculum in middle school. Basic elements of the curriculum are cultivation of the pro-environmental thinking, multi-levelling of teaching materials and methods, and encouraging of student participating activity. Actually, the curriculum construction is composed of stepped-levelling of teaching and learning, reasonable contents volume, encouraging of student practice, and suggesting of evaluation standards of textbook writing. Three main subjects of environmental education for middle school consist of (1) man and environment, (2) recognition of environmental problem, and (3) protection activity for environment. Methodology of environmental education can include multi-disciplinary approaches, variable teaching methods, and continuing evaluation of student practice and participation attitude. Environmental education for teenagers relating to the 7th national curriculum focuses on recognition of the environmental problems and practice activity in daily life. The recognition includes considering relationship of human life to environment, solving environmental problems in regional context, and development of comprehensive understanding concept of the environments. For the practice education, variable teaching methods, such as field survey and application of multi-media, are needed.

  • Teaching with technology has been widespread in practical classroom settings, and increased the needs to enhance pre-service teachers' capability with a variety of technologies. The purpose of this study is focused on designing and implementing a training program to develop pre-service teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge(TPACK) which promotes them use technologies tactically in integrated science classes. Based on the theoretical framework of TPACK and Practitioner's Guide to TPACK, the authors developed ten periods of lessons comprised instructional skills in elementary science education. Subsequently, the program was applied into a teacher trainee course in Korea. The results of this study indicate that the TPACK training program for pre-service teachers significantly influenced on attitude toward convergence, TPACK, and science teaching efficacy of the engaged participants. The developed program, meanwhile, caused a significant TPACK improvement of female participants of the teachers college more effectively. Furthermore, it mitigated the gap between science and humanity tracks coming from their high schools. Consequently, there are possibilities to improve pre-service teachers' teaching strategies for integrated classes, if they have opportunities to review the comprehensibility of technological, pedagogical, content knowledge, and intersected areas with metacognitive perspectives.

  • In this study, KTOP (Korean Teaching Observation Protocol) was applied to teaching practicum for improving pre-service teachers' science teaching. To do this, four pre-service teachers and supervisor teacher observed and analyzed the lessons using the KTOP, and tried to improve he succeeding lessons through collaboration activities. As a result, the pre-service teachers conducted the collaboration activities based on the lesson analysis using the KTOP, therefore it was concluded that the KTOP took a practical role of guidance for improving pre-service science teachers' teaching. And it was found that the collaboration activities using the KTOP helped the improvement of the succeeding lesson, however, more iterative application is necessary for more effective improvement of teaching. Based on the analysis of questionnaire, observation, and interview, it was found that pre-service teachers need to be confident about the use of the KTOP and strive to become a student-centered lesson. And, the KTOP needs to be modified by reducing the number of items and as a more convenient form. Finally, it was inferred that we need to give an effort to help students recognize that learning should be self-directed.

  • Until now, There have been few studies to investigate a degree of abilities or interesting about mathematical problem-posing of first and second grades in elementary school. This is due to the fact that this students(1st and 2nd grades) have a limited amount of study time and their minds are not fully developed, and are lacking in their representation of ability to use the national language. This being the case, it is difficult to investigate their Mathematical problem-posing in a practical manner. However, our 7th elementary school Mathematics curriculum emphasizes the teaching and learning of Mathematical problem-posing from a basic level of first and second grade with emphasis on activity in teaming Mathematics. Through this study, having analysed the problems those children posed, I have found out they improved in numbers and correctness of their posed problems. And I too could found out showing to their much interesting and confidence to mathematical problem-posing and could confirmed for the children to admit themselves its merits through analyzing some questions to ask their opinions to it. I expect that this study can help to develop the teaching and learning materials for mathematical problem-posing and also to improve its methods of elementary school mathematics. The next study task is, I think, that it is necessary to accumulate the studies to investigate and analyse the practical learning activities of children for problem-posing contents of mathematics text books.
