  • Navier's and Finite element solutions based on the first-order shear deformation theory are presented for the analysis of through-thickness functionally graded plates and shells. The functionally graded materials are considered: a sigmoid function is utilized for the mechanical properties through the thickness of the isotropic structure which varies smoothly through the plate and shell thickness. The formulation of a nonlinear 9-node Element-based Lagrangian shell element is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis. Natural-coordinate-based strains are used in present shell element. Numerical results of the linear and nonlinear analysis are presented to show the effect of the different top/bottom elastic modulus, loading conditions, aspect ratios and side-to-thickness ratios on the mechanical behaviors. Besides, the result according to the variation of the power-law index of isotropic functionally graded structures is investigated.

  • The diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance $(K_d({\lambda}))$ is an important parameter for ocean studies. Based on the optical profile data measured during three cruises in the northern South China Sea in autumn from 2003 to 2005, variations in the $K_d({\lambda})spectra$ were analyzed. The variability of $K_d({\lambda})$ shows much distinct features both in magnitude and spectra shape. The $K_d({\lambda})value$ are much higher in costal waters than that of open oceanic waters and the blue-to-green(443/555) ratios of $K_d({\lambda})$ tends to increases with the chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl a]) from open ocean to coastal waters. These characteristics can be explained primarily by the increasing of $a_{w+p}(433)/a_{w+p}(555)$ with [Chl a]. In the short waveband, the relation between $K_d({\lambda})-K_w({\lambda})$ and [Chl a] can be well described by a power law function, suggesting the large contribution of phytoplankton to the variations in $K_d({\lambda})$. As for the spectral model of the diffuse attenuation coefficient, there are good linear relationships between $K_d(490)$ and $K_d({\lambda})$ at other wavelengths, with the slope parameter and the intercept following linear functions within the spectral range $412{\sim}555$ nm. These variabilities of $K_d({\lambda})$ provided much useful information for us to study the bio-optical properties in the northern South China Sea.

  • In this study, with the view to using effectively small and medium diameter Korean domestic woods as structural materials, cross-laminated woods were manufactured by using six species of Korean domestic softwoods and hardwoods, and bending creep properties were investigated for each species. The creep curves showed the shape of the exponential function plot, and the creep curves after 1 hour were able to estimate by fitting it to the power law. The initial and creep compliances of cross-laminated woods showed the higher values in wood species with a low density than in that with a high density. And by cross-laminating, the initial and creep compliances perpendicular to the grain considerably decreased, the extent of the decrease was found to be greater in creep deformation than in initial deformation. The creep anisotropies of cross-laminated woods were considerably decreased by cross-laminating. The relative creep of $C_{\bot}$ type composed of perpendicular-direction lamina in the faces decreased 0.59 - 0.64 times compared to that of $P_{\bot}$ type composed of perpendicular-direction laminae in all layers, and that for $C_{\parallel}$ type composed of parallel-direction laminae in the faces increased 1.5 - 1.6 times compared to that of $P_{\parallel}$ type composed of parallel-direction laminae in all layers.

  • The chemistry of 5-methyl-4-imidazolecarboxylic acid ester synthesis involves three distinct reaction steps. Of these the rate of formation of diketone was found to be a function of oxime and HCl concentration and temperature by the batch experiment. The decomposition of diketone was found to be a slow process whereas temperature was the only variable to affect it significantly. An empirical rate expression for the net formation of diketone fits the experminetal data satisfactorily. The principal objectives of this study are to study the kinetics of the diketone formation reaction and to develop the empirical rate expression.

  • This study examined the flow properties, paste clarity, freeze-thaw stability and gel strength of acetylated sweet potato starch (ASPS) pastes and gels as a function of degree of substitution (DS). ASPS showed high shear-thinning flow behaviors with high Casson yield stress ($\sigma_{oc}$). Consistency index (K), apparent viscosity ($\eta_{a,100}$) and $\sigma_{oc}$ values of ASPS increased with an increase in DS. In the temperature range of $25{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, ASPS followed an Arrhenius temperature relationship. The activation energies (Ea=13.2~14.3 kJ/mol) of the ASPS samples were much lower than that (18.1 kJ/mol) of the native sweet potato starch (SPS). ASPS gels showed better freeze-thaw stability with a significant decrease in syneresis (%) compared to SPS gel. The gel strength values of ASPS were much lower than that of SPS, and significantly decreased with an increase in DS. The clarity of native SPS paste increased after acetylation.

  • According to the law revision of TPMS mounting obligations in Korea, researches about energy harvester which is the alternative of the battery are actively performed by many groups. Because WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) has the proposition of "Install and forget" and the power supplier also has the same performance as the vehicle's lifetime. In this paper, electromagnetic induction type of energy harvester through the relative motion between the rotating wheel and the fixed brake disc is introduced by using the most efficient source as the rotating motion in the view of vehicle's mechanism. The coil on the wheel and the permanent magnet at the brake disc are arranged in several ways. These various arrangements are the number of coil turns are consisted of design variables. By using the orthogonal array to reduce the experimental cost, the optimal composition is verified through the experiment. Finally the validity of the module is considered by measuring the level of storable electrical energy.

  • This study is derived relationships of the resistance coefficients of Darcy-Weisbach and Manning for flow resistance and the dimensionless velocity using many field measurements for 1,875 rivers consist of sand 179, gravel 992, cobble 651 and boulder 53 channels in natural rivers, respectively. The relationships of power law forms are developed as a function of flow discharge, friction slope, and relative submergence by the regression and the semi-empirical method. The measurements distribution of Manning resistance coefficients by the Box-Whisker Plots show the values which ranges from 0.004~0.151 for sand, 0.008~0.250 for gravel, 0.015~0.327 for cobble, 0.023~0.444 for boulder in natural rivers, respectively. Relationships of these semi-empirical and resistance coefficients will be useful to give information in hydraulic engineering.

  • A free vibration analysis and wave propagation of functionally graded porous beams has been presented in this work using a high order hyperbolic shear deformation theory. Unlike other conventional shear deformation theories, a new displacement field that introduces indeterminate integral variables has been used to minimize the number of unknowns. The constituent materials of the beam are assumed gradually variable along the direction of height according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The variation of the pores in the direction of the thickness influences the mechanical properties. It is therefore necessary to predict the effect of porosity on vibratory behavior and wave velocity of FG beams in this study. A new function of the porosity factor has been developed. Hamilton's principle is used for the development of wave propagation equations in the functionally graded beam. The analytical dispersion relationship of the FG beam is obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. Illustrative numerical examples are given to show the effects of volume fraction distributions, beam height, wave number, and porosity on free vibration and wave propagation in a functionally graded beam.

  • This is a proposal to probe local part of the interplanetary dust (IPD) cloud complex and retrieve mean volume emissivity of the local IPDs at mid-infrared wavelengths. This will be done by monitoring, with Infrared Camera (IRC) aboard the ASTRO-F, the annual modulation of the zodiacal emission. In pointing mode of the ASTRO-F mission the spacecraft can make attitude maneuvering over approximately ${\pm}1^{\circ}$ range centered at solar elongation $90^{\circ}$ in the ecliptic plane. The attitude maneuvering combined with high sensitivity of the IRC will provide us with a unique opportunity observationally to take derivatives of the zodiacal emission brightness with respect to the solar elongation. From the resulting differential of the brightness over the ${\pm}1^{\circ}$ range, one can directly determine the mean volume emissivity of the local IPDs with a sufficient accuracy to de-modulate the annual emissivity variations due to the Earth's elliptical motion and the dis-alignment of the maximum IPD density plane with respect to the ecliptic. The non-zero eccentricity ($e_{\oplus}$= 0.0167) of the Earth's orbit combined with the sensitive temperature dependence of the Planck function would bring modulations of amplitude at least $3.34\%$ to the zodiacal emission brightness at mid-infrared wavelengths, with which one may determine the IPD temperature T(r) and mean number density n(r) as functions of heliocentric distance r. This will in turn fix the power-law exponent $\delta$ in the relation $T(r) = T_o(r/r_o)^{-\delta}$ for the dust temperature and v in $n(r) = n_o(r/r_o)^-v$ for the density. We discuss how one may de-couple the notorious degeneracy of cross-section, density, reference temperature $T_o$ and exponent $\delta$.

  • In this work, a high order hyperbolic shear deformation theory with four variables is presented to study the vibratory behavior of functionally graduated plates. The field of displacement of the theory used in this work is introduced indeterminate integral variables. In addition, the effect of porosity is studied. It is assumed that the material characteristics of the porous FGM plate, varies continuously in the direction of thickness as a function of the power law model in terms of volume fractions of constituents taken into account the homogeneous distribution of porosity. The equations of motion are obtained using the principle of virtual work. An analytical solution of the Navier type for free vibration analysis is obtained for a FGM plate for simply supported boundary conditions. A comparison of the results obtained with those of the literature is made to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. It can be concluded from his results that the current theory is not only accurate but also simple for the presentation of the response of free vibration and the effect of porosity on the latter.
