  • This paper presents the development and testing of a power conditioning system(PCS) for application to a 100kW Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) generation system. The MCFC generation system is a part of a four year government funded research project that began in 2001. This paper presents the results of various tests and performance verification of the 100kW PCS using a DC power system that simulates the DC output of the MCFC fuel cell. Performance of the DC/DC, DC/AC converters were verified, and basic control functions such as grid connection, protection and characteristics of each components were tested. The tests were performed under light load and rated load conditions to verify the operation efficiency, power quality effects, and stability of the PCS.

  • In Yonggwang nuclear units 3 and 4 currently under commercial operation, the cold leg temperature was very close to the technical specification limit of 298$^{\circ}C$ during initial startup testing, which was caused by the higher-than-expected reactor coolant system flow. Accordingly, the reference temperature (Tref) program needed to be revised to allow more flexibility for plant operations. In this study, the method of a specific test performed at Yonggwang nuclear unit 4 to revise the Tref program was described and the test results were discussed. In addition, the modified Tref program was evaluated on its potential impacts on system performance and safety. The methods of changing the Tref program and the associated pressurizer level setpoint program were also explained. Finally, for Ulchin nuclear unit 3 and 4 currently under initial startup testing, the effects of reactor coolant system flow rate on the coolant temperature were evaluated from the thermal hydraulic standpoint and an optimum Tref program was recommended.

  • As a power transmission line supplying power to a densely populated city, the high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable is expected to one of the most effective cables with a compact size because of its high current density. The verification of HTS power cable system have been progressed by KEPRI. A cooling system for a 3-phase 100m HTS power cable with 22.9kV/1.25kA was installed and tested at KEPCO's Gochang power testing center in Korea. The system consists of a liquid nitrogen decompression cooling system with a cooling capacity of 3kW and a closed circulation system of subcooled liquid nitrogen. Several performance tests of the cable system with respect to the cooling such as cooling capacity, heat load and temperature stability, were performed at several temperatures. Thermal cycle test, cool-down to liquid nitrogen temperature and warm-up to room temperature, was also performed to investigate thermal cycle influences. The outline of the installed cooling system and performance test results are presented in this paper.

  • IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) 62271-100 has been adopted for the design test of circuit breaker which is used as the main protecting device of power system. But, it is also necessary to separately receive the testing certificate in accordance with ANSI/IEEE standard for getting into the american market. Up to now, several domestic companies have completed the ANSI/IEEE testing in medium circuit breaker of distribution system, but they recently started the ANSI/IEEE testing in ultra high-voltage class of transmission and substation system. This paper introduces the testing techniques and its results for the making and breaking performance of 145kV, 40kA $SF_6$ gas circuit breaker which was firstly performed in KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Institute) by the ANSI/IEEE standard.

  • A plate-fin type recuperator for a gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generation system was designed, manufactured, and tested. Performance analysis shows that the performance of the system is directly affected by the performance of the recuperator. Therefore, the recuperator should be designed and manufactured carefully, and its performance should be tested and verified before it is integrated into the system. In this paper, the developing procedure including designing, manufacturing, and testing of a cross flow plate-fin type recuperator was presented. Performance test results showed that the design requirements of the recuperator were almost satisfied. Based on the test results, improved design to reduce the size of the recuperator was suggested.

  • For defect characterization in steam generator tubes in nuclear power plant, artificial neural network has been extensively used to classify defect types. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of Bagging for improving the performance of neural network for the classification of tube defects. Bagging is a method that combines outputs of many neural networks that were trained separately with different training data set. By varying the number of neurons in the hidden layer, we carry out computer simulations in order to compare the classification performance of bagging neural network and single neural network. From the experiments, we found that the performance of bagging neural network is superior to the average performance of single neural network in most cases.

  • High-performance research reactors require fuel that operates at high specific power to high fission density, but at relatively low temperatures. Research reactor fuels are designed for efficient heat rejection, and are composed of assemblies of thin-plates clad in aluminum alloy. The development of low-enriched fuels to replace high-enriched fuels for these reactors requires a substantially increased uranium density in the fuel to offset the decrease in enrichment. Very few fuel phases have been identified that have the required combination of very-high uranium density and stable fuel behavior at high burnup. U-Mo alloys represent the best known tradeoff in these properties. Testing of aluminum matrix U-Mo aluminum matrix dispersion fuel revealed a pattern of breakaway swelling behavior at intermediate burnup, related to the formation of a molybdenum stabilized high aluminum intermetallic phase that forms during irradiation. In the case of monolithic fuel, this issue was addressed by eliminating, as much as possible, the interfacial area between U-Mo and aluminum. Based on scoping irradiation test data, a fuel plate system composed of solid U-10Mo fuel meat, a zirconium diffusion barrier, and Al6061 cladding was selected for development. Developmental testing of this fuel system indicates that it meets core criteria for fuel qualification, including stable and predictable swelling behavior, mechanical integrity to high burnup, and geometric stability. In addition, the fuel exhibits robust behavior during power-cooling mismatch events under irradiation at high power.

  • The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) was developed by use of BEMT. The Prandtl's tip loss theory was adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil were predicted via X-FOIL and also the post stall characteristics of S-809 were estimated by the Viterna's equations. All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results, performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW(FIL-20) at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data were used for the power prediction of the FIL-20 respectively. The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.

  • Wind turbines have an enormous potential for decentralized electricity generation. In recent years, there has been an increasing worldwide interest in small/medium wind systems. This paper presents the results of power performance testing conducted on a 50 kW turbine located in Yeonggwang test-bed. The turbine system is a pitch, active yaw, variable speed, upwind, three blade with a direct drive PMSG. This thesis covers the operation of variable speed wind turbines with pitch-yaw control. The system considered is controlled to generate maximum energy while minimizing loads. The data include power, wind speed, and direction from meteorological towers, and nacelle anemometer readings and output from turbine. The analysis concentrates on the effect of the load on the power-wind speed curve of the turbine.
