  • Bismuth-telluride based $(Bi_{0.2}Sb_{0.8})_2Te_3$ thermoelectric powders were fabricated by two-step planetary milling process which produces bimodal size distribution ranging $400\;nm\;{\sim}\;2\;{\mu}m$. The powders were reduced in hydrogen atmosphere to minimize oxygen contents which cause degradation of thermoelectric performance by decreasing electrical conductivity. Oxygen contents were decreased from 0.48% to 0.25% by the reduction process. In this study, both the as-synthesized and the reduced powders were consolidated by the spark plasma sintering process at $350^{\circ}C$ for 10 min at the heating rate of $100^{\circ}C/min$ and then their thermoelectric properties were investigated. The sintered samples using the reduced p-type thermoelectric powders show 15% lower specific electrical resistivity ($0.8\;m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) than those of the as-synthesized powders while Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity do not change a lot. The results confirmed that ZT value of thermoelectric performance at room temperature was improved by 15% due to high electric conductivity caused by the controlled oxygen contents present at bismuth telluride materials.

  • In this study, nano-sized cobalt oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm was prepared from a cobalt chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The influences of reaction temperature on the properties of the generated powder were examined. The average particle size of the particles formed based on the spray pyrolysis process at a reaction temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ is roughly 20 nm. Moreover, most of these particles cannot appear with an independent type, thereby coexisting in a droplet type. When the reaction temperature increases to $800^{\circ}C$, the average particle size not only increases to roughly 40 nm but also shows a more dense structure while the ratio of particles which shows a polygonal form significantly increases. As the reaction temperature increases to $900^{\circ}C$, the distribution of the particles is from roughly 70 nm to 100 nm, while most of the particle surface is more intricately close and forms a polygonal shape. When the reaction temperature increases to $1000^{\circ}C$, the particle size distribution of the powder shows an existing form from 80 nm to at least 150 nm in an uneven form. As the reaction temperature increases, the XRD peak intensity gradually increases, yet the specific surface area gradually decreases.

  • The thermoelectric effect, which converts waste heat into electricity, holds promise as a renewable energy technology. Recently, bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3)-based alloys are being recognized as important materials for practical applications in the temperature range from room temperature to 500 K. However, conventional sintering processes impose limitations on shape-changeable and tailorable Bi2Te3 materials. To overcome these issues, three-dimensional (3D) printing (additive manufacturing) is being adopted. Although some research results have been reported, relatively few studies on 3D printed thermoelectric materials are being carried out. In this study, we utilize extrusion 3D printing to manufacture n-type Bi1.7Sb0.3Te3 (N-BST). The ink is produced without using organic binders, which could negatively influence its thermoelectric properties. Furthermore, we introduce graphene oxide (GO) at the crystal interface to enhance the electrical properties. The formed N-BST composites exhibit significantly improved electrical conductivity and a higher Seebeck coefficient as the GO content increases. Therefore, we propose that the combination of the extrusion 3D printing process (Direct Ink Writing, DIW) and the incorporation of GO into N-BST offers a convenient and effective approach for achieving higher thermoelectric efficiency.

  • In the present work, planar-type ZnO powder of [0001] plane with a high aspect ratio range of 20:1 to 50:1 was synthesized. Ag or CuO could be coated on the planar-type ZnO powder by wet methods such as centrifugation or ball milling. During the coating, the average size of the powder was slightly increased while maintaining the shape and XRD pattern of ZnO. When Ag or CuO was coated, the absolute value of the zeta potential, as well as the concentration of oxygen vacancy, was increased. Ag or CuO coated planar-type ZnO power exhibited excellent antibacterial performance, which seems to be related to their high electrostatic attraction force. They could be made into a masterbatch by mixing with ABS resin, and their applicability to antibacterial substances was confirmed by manufacturing the caps of a keyboard.

  • In order to improve the activation properties of the $AB_2$ type hydrogen storage alloys for Ni-MH battery, the alloy surface was modified by employing high energy ball milling. The $Zr_{0.54}Ti_{0.45}V_{0.54}Ni_{0.87}Cr_{0.15}Co_{0.21}Mn_{0.24}$ alloy powder was ball milled for various period by using the high energy ball mill. As the ball milling time increased, activation of the $AB_2$ type composite powder electrodes were enhanced regardless of additives. When the ball milling time was small discharge capacities of the $AB_2$ type composite powder electrodes increased with the milling time. On the other hand for large milling time it decreased with increasing milling time. The maximum discharge capacity was obtained by ball milling for 3-4 min.

  • A bulk-type Ta material is fabricated using the kinetic spray process and its microstructure and physical properties are investigated. Ta powder with an angular size in the range $9-37{\mu}m$ (purity 99.95%) is sprayed on a Cu plate to form a coating layer. As a result, ~7 mm-sized bulk-type high-density material capable of being used as a sputter material is fabricated. In order to assess the physical properties of the thick coating layer at different locations, the coating material is observed at three different locations (surface, center, and interface). Furthermore, a vacuum heat treatment is applied to the coating material to reduce the variation of physical properties at different locations of the coating material and improve the density. OM, Vickers hardness test, SEM, XRD, and EBSD are implemented for analyzing the microstructure and physical properties. The fabricated Ta coating material produces porosity of 0.11~0.12%, hardness of 311~327 Hv, and minor variations at different locations. In addition, a decrease in the porosity and hardness is observed at different locations upon heat treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot(a kind of salted and fermented fish) with chitosan having less fishy smell and salty taste. In order to decrease the fishy smell and increase the palatable taste effectively, four types of seasoning were developed, in which minced ginger, garlic and onion were included. In order to improve the color and flavor of seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot, high-quality powdered hot red pepper was also added in all the seasonings. Seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot type 1 had the oil and roasted powder of sesame, which are known to decrease fishy smell and palatable taste, and was the basis of other seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot. Type 2 had the oil and roasted powder of perilla, which also were known to decrease fishy smell and to increase palatable taste effectively. Type 3 had roasted soybean powder and laver to increase savory and palatable taste. It was developed especially for old and young people who like savory taste. Type 4, containing citron syrup, was for the young and children. All the developed seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot samples had better red color and other sensory properies than the control (S-company's seasoned Hwangseoke-jeot), as tested by colorimetry and sensory evaluation. More than 1% (w/v) of chitosan gave an astringent taste to seasoning, so it is recommended not to exceed 1% (w/v) in the seasoning. The developed functional seasonings of jeot would be applicable to other kinds of jeot.

  • $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ HDDR-treated powder was compacted by hot-pressing using different configurations of dies and heating rates. The die configurations were especially different in terms of the evacuation system that was used in heating for hot-pressing. The coercivity in the compacts was influenced by the evacuation system of the die and heating rate. In spite of the identical hot-pressing temperature and heating rate, coercivity was radically reduced above $600^{\circ}C$ in the compacts prepared in the closed-type die compared to that in the compacts prepared in the open-type die. The coercivity in the compacts prepared in the closed-type die decreased with increasing heating rate and the value further increased when extreme high heating rate was employed. $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ HDDR-treated powder contained a significant amount of residual hydrogen (approx. 1500 ppm) in the form of $Nd_2Fe_{14}BH_x$ hydride. The dramatic coercivity decrease in the compact prepared in the closed die is attributed to the disproportionation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}BH_x$ hydride. High coercivity is mainly due to the effective desorption of hydrogen or the suppression of hydrogen-related disproportionation upon hot-pressing.

  • This study was carried out to establish a method for determining if granule-type Ramen soup powder has been irradiated. Thermoluminescence (TL) and pulled photostimulated luminescence (PPSL) were used as the detection methods through observed changes of TL and PPSL intensities after storage under differing conditions. PPSL intensities increased with increases in irradiation doses. The threshold level of PPSL was below 412$\pm$58 photon counts regardless of storage conditions (room and darkroom) after 10 months. TL intensities also increased with increasing irradiation doses. The coefficients ($R^2$) of PPSL (0.74~0.94) and TL intensities (0.92~0.58) were very highly correlated with irradiation dose. The PPSL and TL intensities were decreased after 10 months of storage. These results indicate that discrimination of irradiated from non-irradiated granule-type Ramen soup powder is possible using TL and PPSL methods despite the decrease in intensities of TL and PPSL with increasing storage times.
