Lepidium sativum (Garden cress): a review of contemporary literature and medicinal properties

  • The utility of Lepidium sativum Linn (Garden cress) as a medicinal plant has increased many fold over a period of time. A survey of literature relating to the medicinal uses of L.sativum reveals it to be one of the widely used medicinal plants. It finds place in folklore medicine, Ayurveda, Unani and other indigenous systems of medicine. Following a large number of claims on the wide range of traditional medicinal properties of the plant, considerable efforts have been made to verify its efficacy as a curative agent through pharmacological investigations and clinical trials. In this article, a comprehensive account of the traditional uses, phytochemical investigation and therapeutic potential of Lepidium sativum is presented.

  • The potential application of toxicogenomics to predictive toxicology has been discussed widely, but the utility of the approach remains largely unproven. Using cDNA microarrays, we have compared the gene expression profiles produced in mouse lymphoma cells by three genotoxic compounds, hydroxyurea (a carcino- gen), p-anisidine (a noncarcinogen) and paclitaxel (carcinogenicity unknown).   • In order to point out the best utility of a product (or a service), marketers need to clearly understand and measure the preference of the consumers. Among numerous marketing analysis techniques, the conjoint analysis is one of the popular tools for market research. One of the issues with this tool is the lack of feedback for the respondents. This paper proposes personal stepwise conjoint analysis based on an interactive Web-questionnaire allowing respondents to receive a diagnosis of their evaluation and giving the possibility to reconsider their evaluation. To validate our proposal, experimentation with forty-two respondents is also demonstrated. Experimental results, potential modifications and improvements are detailed in this paper.

  • Buildings nowadays are increasingly expected to need higher and more economic performance requirements. Energy consumption in buildings accounts for over 30% of total energy use. The Building Energy Management System (BEMS) and renewable energy (RE) technologies are considered as a potential measure to improve energy efficiency and reduce use of grid-power. It is, however, a challenge to utilise the intermittent energy supply of RE in building energy systems. This paper presents an experimental study on a RE-embedded BEMS. A control algorithm for the RE-embedded BEMS was designed to maximise the utilisation of RE and eventually to reduce electrical utility bill. The proposed system is tested at a laboratorial chamber with an air conditioner, fan and heater. The contribution of RE in building energy system is discussed to this end.

  • Immunosensors are of great interest because of their potential utility as specific, simple, label-free, direct detection means and provision of reduction in size, cost and time of analysis comparing with conventional immunoassay. In the last two decades, many reports have been published on the use of immunosensors for a wide range of applications to clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical chemistry, environmental monitoring, biotechnology and food industries. There are also numerous transduction techniques developed such as electrochemical techniques, piezoelectric crystal, and surface plasmon resonance receiving much attention for the direct monitoring of immune reactions at solid surfaces.   • It become increasingly important to design user interface to carry low complexity. The cognitive limitations of users severely restrict utility of highly intelligent but complex modern systems. Since humans are known to use schemas to reduce cognitive complexity, imposing good consistency to an interface design that may help that user form useful schemas will provide powerful control over the complexity. This present a research effort to develop a quantitative method for evaluating interface complexity that the user would experience planning his or her course of action. Taking into account the user's potential schemas, a quantitative measure based on information theory was develped to assess the navigational complexity. This approach does not rely on the subjective judgment of the researcher as most schemes dealing with user schemas do. The proposed method may benefit the rapid prototyping approach to design a better user interface by allowing handy assessment of the design.

  • Despite the adoption of advanced computer technologies by organizational makers, the actual use of E-mail by managers and professionals has tended to be lagging and the potential benefits of these technologies have not been fully realized. Much of the prior research in this area has focused on the utility or perceived usefulness of E-mail as the principal motivating factor in using them. Relatively little attention has been given to the recreational basis of E-mail usage. The limited research in this area indicates the use of E-mail can be stimulated by the intrinsic joy and enjoyment derived. The objective of this study is to integrate these perspectives on the reasons underlying the use of E-mail and to examine simultaneously the relative influence of motivators identified in the literature as affecting individuals' decision to use E-mail. The study focuses specifically on E-mail because of its ubiquitous usage.

The Effect of Toe Spreader on Characteristics of Dynamic Foot Pressure in Children With Spastic Cerebral Palsy (Toe Spreader가 경직성 뇌성마비 아동의 동적 족압 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are any differences, with and without a toe spreader (TS), in dynamic foot pressure distribution in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Methods: Dynamic foot pressure recording using the RSscan system were obtained during walking in 12 participants (male=7, female=5) with and without TS. Mean force was measured for four different plantar regions; great toe, forefoot, midfoot, hindfoot. Displacement of center of pressure (COP), velocity of COP displacement and stance time were also measured during gait. Results: TS walking exhibited statistically significant decrease of mean force under great toe and forefoot (p<0.05), compared with a barefoot walking. Also, TS walking exhibited statistically significant increase of antero-posterior displacement of COP (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate the potential clinical utility of toe spreader to correct dynamic foot pressure during stance phase in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

  • Fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) systems have the potential to reduce equipment downtime, service costs, and utility costs. In this study, model based algorithm and fuzzy algorithm were used to detect and diagnose various fault at System multi-air conditioner. various fault include the Refrigerant Low charging, Fouling of Indoor Heat Exchanger, Fouling of Outdoor Heat Exchanger A experimental verification was conducted in the 6HP System multi-air conditioner on an 8-floor building. Test results showed diagnosis result about 78 $\~$ 90$\%$ for given faults. This Study lays the foundation fur future work on develope the real-time fault detection and diagnosis system for the System multi-air conditioner.

Production and Microbiological Characteristics of Fermented Sausages (발효소시지의 생산과 미생물적 특성)

  • In this study, significant factors influencing on the quality and stability of fermented sausage, such as materials, processing conditions, and microbiological characteristics as well as topography during ripening, were documented. Since most fermented sausages are not heated during manufacture or before consumption, a strict control of the growth of pathogens and the selection of favourable conditions that encourage the specific growth and development of desirable microflora are particularly important. With respect to microbiological safety, hurdles, i.e., preservations(nitrite), redox potential, competitive flora, acidity(pH), and water activity($a_{w}$) are matters of importance to prevent proliferation of bacterial pathogens. Today, for ensuring the safety and quality of the final product, the application of starter cultures in combination with the proper processing is subsequently used in practice. For improving the efficiency of microbiological utility in the production of fermented sausages, the understanding of their topography is essential. The documented different points must be taken into account when HACCP systems set up for the manufacture of fermented sausages. There are continuous researches concerning desirable improvements to sausage fermentation with health enhancing properties.
