This experiment was conducted to enhance the colored potatoes utilization and to determine the biological activity of colored potato extracts. In order to understand the factors responsible for the potent anti-oxidant ability of colored potatoes, it has been evaluated for anti-oxidative activity using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. 'Hongyoung' extract was significant anti-oxidant activities in ORAC assay. About two-fold higher radical absorbance capacity was found in 'Hongyoung' compared to that in 'Jayoung'. The ability of 80% ethanol extracts from colored potatoes to influence the inhibitory activity of nitric oxide (NO) and nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has also been investigated. The various therapeutic benefit claims in the new functional medicinal usage of colored potatoes ascribed to the phenolic compounds and anthocyanin. This result revealed that the extracts of colored potatoes are expected to be good candidate for development into sources of free radical scavenger or COX-2 inhibiting agents.

Potato Virus Y (PVY), PVY-vein necrosis strain, causes severe damage at growth, yield and leaf quality on flue-cured tobacco in Korea. The development of PVY resistant flue-cured varieties without quality deterioration is therefore urgently desired. The flue-cured tobacco, KF120 (Korea Flue-cured 120), was a male-sterile (ms) $F_1$ hybrid derived from the cross between msKF117 and KF0007-7. msKF117 was developed from the cross of NC82 with N. africana and KF0007-7 was developed from the cross of KF117 with NC82. The agronomic characteristics and disease resistance of KF120 was evaluated during 2006-2007 field performance test. It showed better growth characteristics and yield performance than standard cultivar KF109. It had 2 more leaves per plant, flowered 2 days later than KF109. The yield of cured leaf of KF120 was increased by about 5% compared to KF109. The chemical composition and physical properties of the cured leaf of KF120 were as much acceptable as those of KF109. KF120 showed high resistance to PVY compared to KF109. It showed a similar mode of resistance to bacterial wilt and black shank as was found in KF109.

Symptoms of summer patch were observed on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cv. "Midnight II" from mid-June in 2015 in Seoul, Korea. The symptoms appeared as leaf blight, root rot, and frog-eye patch, which are typical of summer patch. To identify the causal agent of these symptoms, a pathogen was isolated from diseased leaves and roots, and the cultural, morphological, and phylogenetic characteristics were analyzed. The isolate reached 50-60 mm on potato dextrose agar (PDA) after 10 days as a white-grey mycelium with septa, and became olive-green or brown from the center. Phialide-like structures were observed at the ends of hyphae, and conidia were rarely observed. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted based on large subunit (LSU) and RNA polymerase II large subunit (RPB1) sequences. According to this analysis, the isolated pathogen was confirmed to be Magnaporthiopsis poae. In a pathogenicity test, summer patch symptoms were observed at 20 days after inoculation using the same grass cultivar. This is the first report of summer patch disease caused by M. poae on cool season grass in Korea.
To analyze the genetic relationships among Korean potato cultivars and to develop cultivar identification method using DNA markers, we carried out genotyping using simple sequence repeats (SSR) analysis and developed multiplex-SSR set. Initially, we designed 92 SSR primer combinations reported previously and applied them to twenty four Korean potato cultivars. Among the 92 SSR markers, we selected 14 SSR markers based on polymorphism information contents (PIC) values. PIC values of the selected 14 markers ranged from 0.48 to 0.89 with an average of 0.76. PIC value of PSSR-29 was the lowest with 0.48 and PSSR-191 was the highest with 0.89. UPGMA clustering analysis based on genetic distances using 14 SSR markers classified 21 potato cultivars into 2 clusters. Cluster I and II included 16 and 5 cultivars, respectively. And 3 cultivars were not classified into major cluster group I and II. These 14 SSR markers generated a total of 121 alleles and the average number of alleles per SSR marker was 10.8 with a range from 3 to 34. Among the selected markers, we combined three SSR markers, PSSR-17, PSSR-24 and PSSR-24, as a multiplex-SSR set. This multiplex-SSR set used in the study can distinguish all the cultivars with one time PCR and PAGE (Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) analysis and PIC value of multiplex-SSR set was 0.95.
'Sanggang', a new cultivar of Agrocybe aegerita, was bred with mating between monokaryotic strains isolated from 'GMAG45109' and 'GMAG45107' in Mushroom Research Station, Gyonggi Province A.R.E.S. in 2009. The optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of 'Sanggang' was 26 to 28$^{\circ}C$ on PDA(potato dextrose agar) medium. The optimum temperature for the primordia formation and fruiting body development of 'Sanggang', was 18 to 20$^{\circ}C$. In the bottle cultivation of 'Sanggang', the period of spawn running was around 38 days at 22 to 23$^{\circ}C$ and the period from scratching of inoculum to harvest was 12 days. These characteristics of 'Sanggang' were not different from those of 'Mihwang' (control). 'Sanggang' had brown-colored pileus, whereas 'Mihwang' had yellowish brown-colored one. In bottle cultivation, 'Sanggang' hada little smaller but stronger stipe and pilus than 'Mihwang', and 'Sanggang', as well as 'Mihwang', had upright stipe. And 'Sanggang' was shown to have lower veil opening ratio than that of 'Mihwang' at harvest time. The yield of fruiting bodies of 'Sanggang' was 134 g/850ml bottle, which was similar to that of 'Mihwang'. Resistance of'Sanggang' against Trichoderma spp., as well as 'Mihwang', was weak. Freshness of 'Sanggang' was maintained for 13 days under storage temperature 4$^{\circ}C$, while that of 'Mihwang' was maintained for 10 days.
In order to identify the responses of Korean soybean cultivars to sudden death syndrome (SDS), forty-two Korean cultivars and three check cultivars (Hartwig and PI 520733 are resistant; Hartz 6686 is susceptible) were tested with sorghum seed inoculum infested with Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines isolate 171 in the greenhouse. This isolate has blue pigment cultural shape on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. All Korean cultivars inoculated with F. solani isolate 171 showed the typical SDS symptoms and disease severity on soybean leaves in each cultivar varied at 4 weeks after inoculation. Nine cultivars were included in the most SDS susceptible group and six cultivars were included in the most susceptible group based on Duncan's multiple range tests (P$\leq$0.05). In results of the LSD analysis for SDS the resistant group, a total of twenty-five Korean cultivars were included in the same SDS resistant group as PI 520733 or Hartwig and fourteen Korean cultivars were included in the same SDS susceptible group as Hartz 6686. In the second experiment, ten Korean cultivars, ten U.S. cultivars, and one introduced line were compared in the same way as the first experiment Disease severity ranking of check cultivars, Hartwig, PI 520733, and Hartz 6686, were the same as in the first experiment. Within Korean cultivars, seven cultivars showed the consistent severity proportions of leaf symptoms. Disease rankings of these cultivars in this experiment were the same as those in the first experiment. Three US cultivars: Hartwig, Hartz 5454, and Forrest, three Korean cultivars: Keunolkong, Myeongjunamulkong, and Jinpumkong 2, and one introduced line, PI 520733, were included in the highest SDS resistant group. Shinphaldalkong 2, Milyang 87, and Samnamkong consistently showed the highest SDS susceptibility in both experiments. Average disease severity in the first and the second experiment were 49.56% and 45.39%, respectively.
Mycological characteristics of Phytophthora nicotianae var. nicotianae SPC10 (A1 type) causing Phytophthora rot of strawberry and the resistances of 11 strawberry cultivars against the pathogen were examined. Optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of the pathogen was obtained in the range of 30~35$^{\circ}C$, and the growth was completely stopped under 13$^{\circ}C$ or over 42$^{\circ}C$. Aerial mycelia were abundant on oatmeal agar (OMA), V-8 juice agar (V8A) and lima bean agar (LBA) medium, although there were slight differences, however, on cornmeal agar (CMA) medium, it was a shape of stellate without aerial mycelia. The colony shape on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium was rough and irregular whereas the mycelial growth was slow, and some aerial mycelia were only produced in the middle of PDA medium. Optimum temperature for sporangial formation was 3$0^{\circ}C$, and zoospores were mostly released at $25^{\circ}C$ from the sporangia. Sporangia were more produced in C/Z solution with pH 5. 0~6.$0^{\circ}C$ than sterilized distilled water (DSW) and distilled water (DW), and zoospores were also released much more than other solutions. Eleven strawberry cultivars such as Reiko, Hokowase, Eyeberry, Akaneko, Sistakara, Toyonoka, Nyoho, Sulhong, Suhong, Myhong and Wonkyo #3104 revealed the disease incidence up to 88.9~100% by the leaf inoculation with mycelial disk. However, Nyoho and Suhong showed higher level of resistance against the pathogen by root inoculation.
In order to find out the effect of five kinds of cultural treatments in fall crop production of potatoes the experiments were carried out with Simabara cultivar at Chonan in 1976. Sprouting of dormant seed pieces were induced by soaking in 2ppm GA and 250ppm Ethrel mixed solution for 60 minutes. Seed pieces with longer sprouts at transplanting, and increasing of urea(nitrogen) application from 10 to 30 Kg per 10a resulted better growth, yields, and quality. Application of total nitrogen at one time on 24th July(transplanting date) resulted lower emergence, yields, growth, and quality as compared with divided application on 24th July and 15th August and 5th September. Higher transplanting than 60$\times$20cm or 70$\times$17cm resulted slender growth and lower yields. Deeper mulch with wheat straw (from 4 to 12cm) induced lower maximal earth temperature in summer and higher minimal earth temperature in autumn.

A double-cropping system with soybean (Glycine max) following the cultivation of potato, garlic, and onion is widely adopted in the southern region of Korea. For this system, marginal dates for planting must be determined for profitable soybean yields, because the decision to plant soybean as a second crop is occasionally delayed by harvest of the first crop and weather conditions. In order to investigate the effect of planting date on soybean yield, three cultivars (early and late maturity) were planted on seven different dates from May 1 to July 30 in both paddy and upland fields across 2012 and 2013. Soybean yields were significantly different among the planting dates and the cultivars; however, the interaction between cultivar and planting date was not significant. Based on linear regression, the maximum yield of soybean was reached with a June 10 planting date, with a sharp decline in yield for crops planted after this date. The results of this study were consistent with those of a previous one that recommends early and mid-June as the optimum planting period. Regardless of soybean ecotype, a reduction in yield of greater than 20% occurred when soybean was planted after mid-July. Frost during soybean growth can reduce yields, and the late maturity cultivars planted on July 30 were damaged by frost before completing maturation and harvest; however, early maturity cultivars were safely harvested. For sufficient time to develop and reach profitable yields, the planting of soybean before mid-July is recommended.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the potential for environmentally friendly cultivation of cv. Haryeong, which was bred by the National Institute of Highland Agriculture in 2006, through evaluation of the late blight field resistance at the farmer's practices level. cv. Haryeong showed higher field resistance to late blight as 590.3 in mean Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) during the cultivation period than cv. Superior as 1377.7 in AUDPC. However there was no observed different trend among the experimental treatments. Mean of tuber yield of cvs. Haryeong and Superior were 2,870 kg/10a and 2,301 kg/10a, respectively, and in all experimental treatments Haryeong was 25% higher than those of Superior. Mean of dry matter content of Haryeong and Superior were 18.1% and 16.1%, respectively, and there were no significant differences among the experimental treatments. cv. Haryeong was confirmed as a suitable cultivar for environmentally friendly cultivation in this experiment. In the future, additional research on fertilization and disease management will be required.
