  • The suitable sterilization conditions in pot cultivation of varieties of Chunchunutari-2-ho and Suhannutari-1-ho Pleurotus ostreatus were investigated. The substrate formulations for the cultivation consisted of 40% poplar sawdust, 40% waste cotton and 20% beet pulp (PWB), and 40% poplar sawdust, 40% cotton seed hull and 20% beet pulp (PCB). The increase in the sterilization temperature caused decrease in the pH of the substrate. The moisture content of PWB substrate increased by 1.8%, but that of PCB substrate decreased by 4.1 % after low temperature sterilization ($12hr\;at\;60^{\circ}C$). However, a little change in the sterilization at higher temperature ($6hr\;at\;100^{\circ}C\;and\;90min\;at\;121^{\circ}C$) did not alter the moisture content of both substrate appreciably. The duration of mycelial growth was longest and its density was lowest in low temperature sterilization ($12hr\;at\;60^{\circ}C$). The high pressure sterilization ($90min\;at\;121^{\circ}C$) of PCB substrate produced high yield (236.6 g/pot) and the highest biological efficiency (96.6%) for Chunchunutari-2-ho. On the contrary the high temperatures sterilization ($6hr\;at\;100^{\circ}C$) of PCB substrate resulted in the yield of 259.1 g/pot with the biological efficiency 94.9% for Suhannutari-2-ho.

  • In order to find out the most favorable shape and structure of pot for conger eel, Astroconger myriaster(Brevoort), the box type, tube type and flat box type of net pots and the pipe type of plastic pot were prepared. Then, the ability of the pots attracting the eel into them were investigated through a tank experiment. The attracting ability was highest in the pipe type without distinction of its length, 50cm and 60cm. In the flat box type, the effective height of pot and the diameter of entrance tip turned out 5cm respectively. But the ability was very poor in the rest pots, especially in the tube type. Thus, the pipe type and flat box type of pots were employed again in a field experiment for comparing their catches with those of the conventional bamboo and plastic pots. In the experiment, the catches were the most in the pipe type and second in the flat box type. But the bamboo and plastic pots both produced comparatively low catches, showing no significant difference between them. It was therefore concluded that the pipe type of pot might be the most favorable one for catching the conger eel.

  • To clarify the effect of silicate application on the reduction of summer drought damage of orchardgrass, a pot experiment treated with 3 levels of available SiO$_2$ 100(control), 150, and 200 ppm was carried out in the phytotron, and field experiment in the medium textured hilly soils also was carried out. The plant height and weight of orchardgrass grown in the pots were increased with increasing of SiO$_2$ application, and the higher content of SiO$_2$ in plant became erect types of leaves with low ethylene evolution. With application of SiO$_2$ in the hilly soils, the reduction of summer drought phenomenon was recognized by the increasing 9% in yield with decreased ethylene evolution at summer drought stage but the nutritive values of the plant were not deteriorated.

  • Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.), Dandelion (Taraxacum platycarpum H. DAHLST.), Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.), Gree kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia var.), Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), Annual lespedeza (Kummerowia striata (Thunb.)Schindl.), Mugwort (Artemisia capillaris Thunb.), Horseweed (Erigeron canadensis L.), Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) are major weeds in turf. In this study, 23 medicinal plant extracts were tested for herbicidal activities against crabgrass and dandelion in the course of major weed in turf. In pot experiment, we implemented pre-emergence application used medicinal plant extracts showed herbicidal activity in petridish experiment. In effect, inhibition rates of germination were 61.0% at Curcuma longa extract and 62.5% at Cnidium officinale extract in crabgrass pot experiment, and 77.8% at Ailanthus altissima extract in dandelion pot experiment.

  • The pot experiment was conducted using soils with varying contents of available phosphorus to select the reasonable method for determination of the available phosphorus content in soils for Nak-Dong rice cultivation. On a basis of the responses to the phosphorus tertilizer applied, the linear correlation coefficients by Bray No.1, Bray No.2, Lancaster, North Carolina and Olsen methods were 0.887, 0.868, 0.879, 0.952 and 0.911 for Nak-Dong rice yield, respectively. Of the methods tested, North Carolina method was the most suitable for determining, the phosphorus content in soils for Nak-Dong rice. The phosphorus application promoted the growth of Nak-Dong rice in pots for culm, tiller number, available stem and grain number per ear. Based on this experiment it could be presumed that the recommanded quantity of phosphorus fertilizer should attain to 5kg per 10a to promote the growth of Nak-Dong rice in A-soil and 10kg per 10a in B -, C - and D-soil. The results from the pot experiment will be somewhat different from those from the field experiment. Therefore, field experiment should be carried out for further information.

  • Dehiscence of ginseng seeds under the various conditions, growing experiment in the different soil conditions, and growing experiment with extracts obtained by water passed the pot of 4 year ginseng plants were performed. The results obtained are as follows: The survival rate of ginseng plants in the soil of ginseng field sterilized by MIYAZAWA's method was higher than that of the non-sterilized, but lower than that of the control. The survival rate of ginseng plants on the sterilized soil of ginseng field was lower than that on the surrounding soil. The growth of ginseng plants cultivated with the water passed through the pot-planted 4-year-old ginseng plants was strongly inhibited in comparison with the control. Besides biological cause, chemical products excreted from the root of ginseng plants might be the important factors of soil sickness in the successive cultivation of the same plants.

  • A laboratory observation and a greenhouse pot experiment were carried out to know the correlationship between the attraction and the susceptibility of rice varieties to Aphelenchoides besseyi. Degrees of attraction of rice seedling extract to A. besseyi and the multiplication rates of the nematode varied greatly according to the rice varieties used. And there was strong correlation between the two variables; i.e., the more the seedling extract of a variety attracted by the nematode in agar observation, the more the variety was susceptible in greenhouse pot experiment.

  • The potato tuberworm, Phthorimaea operculella, is an occasional pest to tobacco plants in southern regions of Korea. In order to screen effective pesticides against the worm in tobacco leaves, pot and field experiments were carried out in 1981. In the pot experiment with a tobacco variety, Hicks, several effective organic phosphates (Dimecron- LQ 50, Dursban-WP 25, Ekalux-EC 25. Elsan-EC 47.5, and EPN-EC 45), out of 9 Pesticides tested, were solecte4 from their high mortality of more than 90%. Among these Pesticides Ekalux- EC 25 and Elsan- EC 47.5 were recommended to tobacco growers from their excellent efficacy in the field experiment with a tobacco variety, Burley 21.
