  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether the couple perceived breast cancer as a traumatic event, to evaluate the association among posttraumatic growth, dyadic adjustment, and quality of life and to explore the predictors affecting quality of life of the couple. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative survey design was utilized. Participants were 57 couples recruited from a national cancer center in Korea. Data were analyzed using paired t-test, McNemar test and independent t-test. On the basis of variables found to be significantly associated with quality of life, multiple regression was used to examine the simultaneous influence of multiple predictors. Results: Breast cancers survivors and spouses perceived breast cancer as a traumatic event (43.9% and 24.6%, respectively). The global quality of life was explained by perception as trauma (${\beta}$= -19.79) and posttraumatic growth (${\beta}$=0.46) in survivors, and perception as trauma (${\beta}$= -18.81) and dyadic adjustment (${\beta}$=0.53) in spouses. Conclusion: Results suggest that future research should use qualitative methods to evaluate why contemplating reasons for cancer contributed to posttraumatic growth, examine other potential predictors of quality of life such as dyadic adjustment and intimacy, and identify links between posttraumatic growth and other psychological outcomes such as distress and well-being, using prospective analyses.

  • In this study we investigated the structural relationship between the Big Five personality traits which is a pretrauma characteristic, posttraumatic cognition, rumination, posttraumatic growth(PTG), and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) symptoms. The participants were 1,000 adults who experienced traumatic event. For statistical analysis we set the research model with the Big Five personality traits affecting deliberate rumination through posttraumatic cognition and intrusive rumination. Competing model was set without the path from intrusive rumination to deliberate rumination. The results indicated that rumination and posttraumatic cognition did not mediate the relationship between extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and PTG, PTSD symptoms. Second, there was a mediating effect of intrusive rumination between openness to experience and PTSD symptoms. Moreover, the pathway to intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, and PTG from openness to experience was also significant. Third, the pathway to posttraumatic cognition, event-related rumination, and both PTSD symptoms and PTG from neuroticism was significant. These results support the cognitive process of PTG model In the end we discussed the implication and limitations of the study.

  • The purpose of this study was to specifically explore the path leading to posttraumatic growth through self-efficacy, which is the personal psychological characteristic of adults who have experienced trauma, through cognitive flexibility and sequential mediating effects of hope. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted for adults aged 19 to 65 years old across the country with trauma experience. Among them, 316 data suitable for research analysis were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. First, posttraumatic growth showed a statistically significant positive correlation with self-efficacy, alternative and control of cognitive flexibility, and hope. Second, the increase in posttraumatic growth was directly related to the increase in hope, and the increased hope was found to be positively related to the increased alternative and self-efficacy level. Third, in the relationship between self-efficacy and posttraumatic growth, the sequential mediating effect of alternatives and hopes was found to be statistically significant. Based on these findings, implications, limitations and suggestions of the study were discussed.

The subjects were 197 middle aged women who experienced adolescent parenting stress. The data was collected from September 20, 2018 to September 30, 2018. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS/WIN 28.0. Parenting stress of adolescent was relatively high, but posttraumatic stress was low. There were significant negative correlations for posttraumatic growth with parenting traumatic. These results are expected to be important data for the development and application of the intervention program to reduce the stress of parenting and posttraumatic growth in the middle aged women.

Collected data were analysed by AMOS program, Structure Equation Model(SEM) was implemented to verify the mediating effect between optimism and quality of relationship. Finally, Phantom Variable was utilized for verification of indirect influence of a multi mediating effects. The findings of this study were as follows, First, the result shows that the higher level interpersonal traumatic experience, the higher posttraumatic growth they have. Second, it shows that optimism and quality of relationship have partial mediating effect between interpersonal traumatic experience and posttraumatic growth. Third, it was analyzed that optimism and quality of relationship had double mediating effect. Based on these findings, the research discussion reinforced the importance of intervene with its optimism and quality of relationship in the site of those who experience interpersonal trauma. • The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of disability identity on posttraumatic growth and the moderating effects of resilience on the relationship between the two variables in individuals with acquired disabilities who have experienced the trauma of disability in their adulthood. For the purpose, the study surveyed 203 persons who have acquired a disability after the age of 18 years, and then performed a standard multiple regression analysis and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis respectively using data gathered. The results of the study are as follows. First, a higher disability identity resulted in a higher level of posttraumatic growth. Second, when disability identity and posttraumatic growth were positively related, increasing the level of resilience increased the effect of disability identity on posttraumatic growth. Thus on the basis of the results, the study discussed the tasks ahead to form a positive disability identity and increase the level of resilience.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to evaluate posttraumatic growth in patients with cancer and to examine the validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: A literature review, semi-structured patient interviews and an expert panel consultation produced a 27 preliminary item questionnaire. Participants were 150 cancer patients recruited to test the reliability and validity of the preliminary scale. Data were analyzed using item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, convergent validity and internal consistency. Results: Item reduction and exploratory factor analysis led to 23 items, grouped into five subscales which were labelled new possibilities (6 items), coping skills (5 items), preciousness of life (5 items), relating to others (4 items), and personal strength (3 items). Convergent validity was evaluated by total correlation with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (r=.45, p<.001). The final scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ =.94). Conclusion: Findings from this study indicate that the Cancer-Specific Posttraumatic Growth Inventory has validity and reliability and is considered to be appropriate for assessing posttraumatic growth in patients with cancer.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with psychosocial adjustment in colorectal cancer survivors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with face-to-face interviews was conducted of 156 colorectal cancer survivors after surgery visiting an outpatient cancer clinic at a tertiary hospital in S city, Korea. Posttraumatic growth, health-promoting behavior, length of treatment, difficulty in activities of daily living, and having a stoma were entered into the linear regression model. Results: The strongest factor influencing the level of psychosocial adjustment was health-promoting behavior (${\beta}=.33$, p<.001), followed by difficulty in activities of daily living (${\beta}=-.24$, p=.001), posttraumatic growth (${\beta}=.20$, p=.004), and having a stoma (${\beta}=-.19$, p=.004). Conclusion: Nursing interventions for psychosocial adjustment in colorectal cancer survivors need to include the contents for posttraumatic growth, as well as health-promoting behavior, and activities of daily living.
