This study was undertaken to access the effect of collection methods on the collection efficiency, blastocyst rate and pregnancy rate after IVP embryo transfer. The ovaries of Hanwoo were obtained from an abattoir and kept on 25 to $28^{\circ}C$ and transported to laboratory within 4 hrs. The oocytes were collected by aspiration of follicles $(2\~6\;mm)$ with or without slicing of ovaries after aspiration. The oocytes were matured in vitro (IVM) for 20 to 24 hrs in TCM-199 supplemented with $10\%$ fetal bovine serum at $39^{\circ}C$ under $5\%\;CO_{2}$ in air. Following routine IVM/IVF procedure, the oocytes and presumed zygotes were cultured for three day in CRlaa medium with BSA. The cumulus cells at 2 to 8-cell stage of embryos removed then the embryos and were cultured in CRlaa medium containing $10\%$ fetal bovine serum in $5\%\;CO_{2}$ at $39^{\circ}C$. The fresh blastocysts cultured for 7 to 9 days were transferred into recipients. The numbers of oocytes recovered form two different methods, the aspiration and slicing after aspiration, were compared to know what. The number of oocytes per ovary was 8.2 and 6.5 in aspiration combining slicing, and aspiration groups, respectively (p<0.05). The cleavage rate in aspiration method are significantly (p<0.05) high than those in slicing post aspiration $(27.9\%)$, and aspiration $(25.5\%)$. The pregnancy .ate in aspiration method $(62.5\%)$ was high than that in slicing method after aspiration $(54.4\%)$. The pregnancy rates of aspiration method and slicing method after aspiration in nullipara $(58.1\%\;vs\;68.2\%)$ was high than that in pluripara $(49.5\%\;vs\;53.2\%)$. The results obtained that the increased number of oocytes per ovary in slicing method after aspiration could be better than that in aspiration method. Pregnancy rate in aspiration method was slightly higher in than that in slicing method after aspiration.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and trend of Landrace and Yorkshire pigs, which were raised on private farms from 1999 to 2005 and tested for their reproductive performance by the Korea Animal Improvement Association. Prior to analysis, records without pedigree or having value with larger than±3×standard deviation for the Total number of born were excluded. The effects of breed and environmental factors were estimated with least square method(Harvey, 1979), and estimation of breeding values and genetic parameters were performed on the data of 1’st litter only with GIBBSF90(Misztal, 2001) which was programmed according to Gibbs Sampling method based on Bayesian Inference by Gianola and Fernando(1986), Jensen(1994) and others. Gibbs sampling was performed 50,000 times for each parameter, and the first 5000 samples were regarded as those in burn-in period and thus, excluded for post hoc analysis. Total number of born and total number of accident were statistically significant(p<0.01) for the breed, farrowing year, farrowing season and parity effects, and the number born alive at birth was statistically significantp<(0.01) for the breed, farrowing year, farrowing season and parity effects. No particular trend was observed in the genetic and phenotypic improvement of the total number of born and number born alive at birth before 2001, when the piglet registration system started, but the tendencies of increasing for the total number of born and number born alive and decreasing for the total number of accident were observed since 2001. Somewhat higher heritability estimates of our study seems to be attributed to the situations that first parity records with poor farrowing performances were used in the analyses and it was impossible to obtain accurate reproductive performance due to the absence of criteria for record keeping at the level of individual farms.

This study was attempted to find the mutual relationship between leisure activities and life satisfaction by the aged persons in a rural area. The data was obtained by interview with questionnaire and the data from 209 persons aged over 65, residing in Dohwa-myeon and Podu-myeon, Koheung-kun, Chollanam-do were analysed. The survey was carried out from Feb. 16th to May 3rd in 1998 and the results are as follows: 1. The survey showed that the major leisure activities were TV watching followed by talking with friends, club activities, taking a walk, visiting friends' or relatives' home and breeding domestic animals. 2. The types of leisure activities were classified into 8 patterns as active self-enlightenment, passive self-enlightenment, temporal amusements, passive self-activities, cozy introspective activities, friend oriented activities, family oriented activities and religious activities. Among the above 8 patterns active self-enlightenment type contributed most to the life satisfaction. 3. The major factors affecting leisure activities were sex, age, average income, religion and educational status. And the major factors affecting life satisfaction were sex, age average income, educational status and a state of health. In conclusion the more the aged persons participated in leisure activities, the better they felt life satisfaction.

Cryopreservation of semen is useful for animal breeding via artificial insemination (AI). However, the use of frozen-thawed boar semen is limited due to cryodamage. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations of MitoTEMPO (a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant) in lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extenders on kinetic characteristics of frozen-thawed boar sperms. Semen samples were collected from mature Duroc boars (2~3 years old) and cryopreserved in LEY extenders containing 0, 0.5, 5, 50, and 500 μM MitoTEMPO. The kinetic characteristics of frozen-thawed sperms were determined 0 and 30 min after thawing using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Results indicated that sperm motility immediately after thawing was significantly higher with 5 and 50 μM (50.46±2.71% and 46.96±2.66%, respectively) than with 500 μM MitoTEMPO (35.40±2.95%) (P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in other kinetic characteristics except motility. In conclusion, the addition of MitoTEMPO to the sperm freezing extender may have a beneficial effect on motility of post-thawed boar semen.
In this study, the efficiency of microsatellite (MS) markers for pork quality was examined and further, their suitability to domestic pork industry also was verified, by measuring meat quality parameters of Berkshire breeds. A total of 323 pigs of Berkshire breeds were slaughtered and subjected to meat quality evaluation. In addition, the genomic DNAs from blood samples of slaughtered pigs were used for genotyping analysis of 50 MS markers. The results revealed that Berkshire breeds have excellent meat quality, compared with the popular domestic breeds such as Duroc, Yorkshire, and Landrace. Noticeably, the Berkshire breeds exhibited a significant post-mortem pH24hr ($5.88{\pm}0.01$) and fat content ($2.878{\pm}0.06$). Through the linkage analysis between MS markers, 14 MS markers showed significant association with meat quality traits (p<0.05). Maximum significant differences of 0.55 pH24hr value and 2.04% fat content were observed between the highest and lowest allele populations. If these 14 MS markers are applied to the pork quality diagnosis kit, the synergistic effect can be expected in meat quality parameters such as meat color, fat content, pH 24 hr, cooking loss, drip loss and water-holding capacity.
Fingerlings hatched from the eggs of the puffer, Fugu rubripes, which were spawned on May 21, 1969, and were cultivated. The results of their growth during 150 days, until October 25th, are summarized as follows: 1. The eggs began to hatch after 163 hours, at a water temperature of 15.9 to $17.4^{\circ}C$, and the hatching rate was $61.56\%$. 2. They reached the post-larval stage 6 to 7 days after hatching, and at this time a high mortality occurred. The mortality rate was 57.26 to $68.0\%$. 3. Sixteen days after hatching some of the larger fingerlings (6.7mm in total length) began attacking some of the smaller ones (4.6mm in to total length). 4. Twenty five to twenty eight days after hatching, the fish changed their food, and at this time a second high mortality occured. The total mortality rate amounted to 90.7 to $90.9\%$ of the total hatch. 5. After the fingerling stage. cannibalism occurs. The fish usually attack the caudal part of other fingerlings. It occurs regardless of body length and when the food supply is short. 6. The food coeffiicient at the age of 46 days (when body length is 53 to 68 mm) was 5.5 for short-necked clams, 8.5 for earth-worms, and 8.7 for fishes. 7. A third hish mortality occurred 53 to 63 days after hatching, the total mortality amounting to 95.76 to $97.34\%$, and the main cause of the mortality was found to be rickets resulting from nutritional deficiency 8. The growth rates were as follows: 2.68mm just after hatching, 3.84mm at the age of 10 days; 7.96mm after 25 days; 20.96mm or 130mg after 40 days; 73.68mm or 9.06g after 80 days: and 123mm or 31.8g after 150 days. 9. The water temperature during the above period was 15.7 to $28.4^{\circ}C$ with an average of $22.10^{\circ}C$ and the salinity was 25.53 to $34.50\%$ with an average of $32.07\%$, 10. The young of this species could endure well a wide range and sudden rise in salinity, and could survive easily when the salinity suddenly fell to $5\%$, but a considerable mortality occured when it fell to $3\%$. 11. When the fish were tranferred directly to fresh water from normal sea water they died out in 9 hours and 40minutes. However, when transferred from water of $5\%$ salinity at which they were reared for 54 days, they survived for 60 hours and 40 mimutes longer than in the former case.
The study was performed to elucidate the effects of ethylene-absorbent on the quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon fruits in the MA package. Five persimmons were packed in a MA package film (low density polyethylene, 0.055 mm film thickness), and stored at $-0.5^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. Two persimmons were repacked in a MA package with or without ethylene absorbent $(1\;M\;KMnO_4+zeolite)$ and stored at $-0.5^{\circ}C$. Ten days later, these packages was moved to $2^{\circ}C$ or $25^{\circ}C$ storage room to examine the effect of the ethylene-absorbent on the quality of the fruits. Ethylene removal by enclosed ethylene absorbent in MA packaging reduced the rate of fruit respiration at $25^{\circ}C$, so that $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentration in packing were maintained higher and lower, respectively, compared to control. These effects were not observed, however, in $2^{\circ}C$ post-storage. Fruit firmness and sugar composition were also influenced by ethylene absorbent, showing more delayed flesh softening and higher sucrose concentration in ethylene absorbent treated fruits than control. But ethylene-absorbent treatment lowered glucose and fructose concentration. That shows that ethylene could influence on sugar composition by inhibiting sucrose inversion to glucose and fructose. The production of ethanol and acetaldehyde was reduced by ethylene removal, but the effect was not so high as other quality indices.
