  • This study demonstrated the synthesis of high-surface-area metal-free carbonaceous electrodes (CE) from anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates, and their application as supercapacitors. Multi-walled Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were interwoven into a porous network sheet that was attached to one side of AAO template through a vacuum filtration of the homogeneously dispersed MWCNT toluene solution. Subsequently, the conducting polymer was electrochemically grown into the porous MWCNT network and nanochannels of AAO, leading to the formation of a carbonaceous metal-free film electrode with a high surface area in the given geometrical surface area. Typical conducting polymers such as polypyrrole (PPY) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) were examined as model systems, and the resulting electrodes were investigated as supercapacitors (SCs). These SCs exhibited stable, high capacitances, with values as high as 554 F/g, 1.08 F/$cm^2$ for PPY and 237 F/g, 0.98 F/$cm^2$ for PEDOT, that were normalized by both the mass and geometric area.

  • Research on permeable pavement like asphalt and concrete pavement with porous structure has been increasing due to environmental and functional need such as reduction of run off and flood. This study was performed to evaluate void ratio, permeability coefficient, and compressive strength of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using crushed and recycled coarse aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6 mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. Binder and filler used were unsaturated polyester resin and CaCO3, respectively. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate sizes 5~10 mm. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the void ratio, permeability coefficient and compressive strength of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. Accordingly, polypropylene fiber and recycled coarse aggregate can be used for permeable pavement.

This study was performed to evaluate permeability, strengths and durability of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using recycled aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the compressive strength and permeability coefficient of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. The weight reduction ratios for PPC after 300 cycles of freezing and thawing were in the range of 1.6~3.8 % and 2.2~5.6 %, respectively. The weight change ratio was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates. The weight reduction ratios of PPC with fiber and aggregate were in the range of 1.3~2.7 % and 2.2~3.2 % after 13 weeks and was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates.

  • This study was performed to develop environment-friendly porous polymer concrete utilizing recycled aggregates [RPPC] for permeable pavement of uniform quality with high permeability and flexural strength as well as excellent freezing and thawing resistance. The void ratios of RPPC are in the range of 15$\sim$$24\%$, showing the tendency that it is reduced to a great extent as the mixing ratio of the binder increases. The compressive and flexural strength of RPPC are in the range of 19$\sim$26 MPa and 6.2$\sim$7.4 MPa, respectively. Also, it shows a tendency to increase as the mixing ratio of the binder and filler increases. The permeability coefficients of RPPC are in the range of $6.3\times$$10_{-1}$$\sim$$1.5\times$$10_{-2}$cm/s. The flexural loads of RPPC are in the range of 18$\sim$32 KN. The weight reduction ratios obtained from the test for freezing and thawing resistance are in the range of 1.1$\sim$$2.4\%$ after 300 cycles of repeated freezing and thawing of the specimen for all mixes. The relative compressive strengths of RPPC after 300 cycles of freezing and thawing against the compressive strength before freezing and thawing test are in the range of 89$\sim$$96\%$.

  • We prepared the highly ordered nano-wires of polypyrrole, polyaniline conductive polymers and polypyrrole/ polyaniline conductive copolymers by templating the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) porous membrane, in which pore diameter was 20 nm, 100 nm and 200 nm. Those conductive polymers were grown from pore inner surface of AAO membrane forming hollow tubes and then wire structures were formed after 3 hour polymerization. By removing AAO membrane templates using sodium hydroxide solution, the conductive polymer nano-wires were successfully obtained, of which diameter and length were close to the ones of nano-pores in AAO membrane template. Crystallinity and thermal stability of the conductive polymer nano-wires were higher than irregular ones that prepared by solution polymerization. Furthermore, the electrical resistance of conductive polymer nano-wires were reduced by about 4~60% compared with that of the irregular polymers prepared by solution polymerization.

  • Anion exchange polymer electrolyte pore-filling membranes consisting of the whole hydrocarbon materials were prepared by photo polymerization with various quaternary ammonium cationic monomers and characterized on the properties for applying to solid alkali fuel cell (SAFC). Hydrocarbon porous substrates such as polyethylene were used for the preparation of the pore-filling membranes. The hydroxyl ion conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes prepared in this research was dependent on the composition ratio of an electrolyte monomer and crosslinking agents used for polymerization. Furthermore, these pore-filling membranes have commonly excellent properties such as smaller dimensional affects when swollen in solvents, higher mechanical strength, lower fuel crossover through the membranes, and easier preparation process than those of traditional cast membranes.

  • In the manufacturing process of joining of aluminum alloy and polymer, the strength of the metal-polymer joining is greatly influenced by the nanostructure of the oxide film. In this study, we investigated the dependence of joining strength on the thickness, structure, pore formation and surface roughness of the formed film. After the two-step anodization process, the surface oxide layer became thinner and rougher resulting in higher joining strength with the polymer. More specifically, after the two-step anodization, the surface roughness, Ra increased from 2.3 to 3.2 ㎛ with pore of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure, and the thickness of the oxide film was thinned from 350 to 250 nm. Accordingly, the joining strength of the aluminum alloy with polymer increased from 23 to 30 MPa.

  • Herein, novel porous structures were fabricated from monomer solutions of dimethylsiloxane and benzene by directional crystallization in twice. First, a honeycomb-like structure was fabricated by $1^{st}$ directional crystallization of solvent. By infiltration of the solution and subsequent $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, novel structures of different pores in the honeycomb-like structure were fabricated. The porous materials prepared by the repeated directional crystallization have higher indentation modulus and hardness than those of the samples prepared by single directional crystallization. When a higher solution concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization, the maximum increase (indentation modulus: 2140% increase, indentation hardness: 2330% increase) was obtained. On the other hand, porosity and contact angle were lower in the samples from $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization than those from $1^{st}$ directional crystallization. A large decreases was observed, when a relatively high concentration was used in $2^{nd}$ directional crystallization (porosity: 21% decrease, contact angle: 36% decrease).

  • Nitrogen-doped carbons have attracted much attention due to their novel application in relation to gas storage. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbons were synthesized using SBA-15 as a template, polypyrrole as the carbon and nitrogen precursor, and KOH as an activating agent. The effect of the activation temperature ($600-850^{\circ}C$) on the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of the obtained porous carbons was studied. Characterization of the resulting carbons showed that they were micro-/meso-porous carbon materials with a well-developed pore structure that varied with the activation temperature. The highest surface area of $1488m^2g^{-1}$ was achieved at an activation temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ (AC-800). The nitrogen content of the activated carbon decreased from 4.74 to 1.39 wt% with an increase in the activation temperature from 600 to $850^{\circ}C$. This shows that nitrogen is oxidized and more easily removed than carbon during the activation process, which indicates that C-N bonds are more easily ruptured at higher temperatures. Furthermore, $CO_2$ adsorption isotherms showed that AC-800 exhibited the best $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of $110mg\;g^{-1}$ at 298 K and 1 bar.

  • agents used for enhancing mechanical properties of porous natural scaffolds, reduces biocompatability of the scaffolds, due to their inherent cytotoxicity. In this study, scaffolds which was composed of chitosan, alginate and gelatin were cross-linked by using heat treatment instead of cross-linking agent and mechanical properties of the cross-linked scaffold were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis confirmed that cross-linking of heat-treated scaffold was formed via amide or ester linkage between the polymer chains. The heat-treated scaffold had interconnected pores with mean diameter of 100~200 m and showed more than two fold increase of water uptake in comparison with chemically cross-linked scaffold. Tensile strength of the heat-treated scaffold increased up to 130% compared to non cross-linked scaffold and average maximum elongation was 11.3%. The porous cross-linked scaffold with the improved mechanical property may be suitable as a biocompatable scaffold for tissue engineering.
