  • The best way to understand paper properties is to study paper structure. Paper is composed solid materials (pulp and other additives) and air three-dimensionally, it's important to understand pore structure of the paper. There are several method to analysis pore structure of the paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers indicated mercury intrusion distorts the structure due to application of high pressure. So this paper suggest new analysis technique to pore structure of the paper. New pore analysis technique with SEM does not require high pressure, gives good resolution and measures pore structure.

  • In this study, the physical characteristics of steel-wire sound absorbing materials with different thickness and bulk density is experimentally obtained in terms of the porosity and specific flow resistivity. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions can be made. The porosities of steel-wire sound absorbing materials are smaller than those of general absorbing materials, which are inversely proportional to the volume densities. For the porosity measurement with a good accuracy, the dynamic correction based on the system compliance should be involved in porosity measurement. In addition, the flow condition for the precise measurement of the specific flow resistivity of steel-wire sound absorbing materials should be limited in the laminar flow region.

  • Helmholtz resonator is widely used acoustic instrument which has high absorption characteristics at its resonance frequency. Particularly it maintains good performance even in the low frequency region that is difficult to control by general porous absorptive materials. However, under severely high sound pressure level, the absorption characteristics are changed by increase of resistance due to nonlinear behavior of neck impedance. Because of this nonlinear behavior, it is difficult to obtain the expected absorption performance under high sound pressure environment. Thus, in order to prevent excessive rise of resistance, the resonator with neck having cross section dimension decrease away from the entry of the resonator cavity could be suggested. This paper introduces the experiment method and results about nonlinear characteristics of Helmholtz resonator with tapered neck and proposes the approximate nonlinear impedance model.

  • The effect of Co addition on the electrochemical performance and structural stability of porous Ni anode for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) was evaluated by the anodic polarization and the sintering test in the simulated MCFC anode condition ($650^{\circ}C$, 80% $H_2$+20%$CO_2$). The anode current density ranged from 110mA/$cm^2$ to 144mA/$cm^2$ was obtained at +100mV overpotential by additions of Co up to 10 wt.%. The sintering resistance of Ni-Co anodes was higher than that of the pure Ni anode. The increase of sintering resistance seemed to be to the lower diffusion coefficient of Co than that of Ni.

  • Micro-arc discharge oxidation (MDO) is a cost-effective plasma electrolytic process which can be used to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of Al-alloy parts by forming a alumina coating on the component surface. However, the MDO coated Al-alloy components often exhibit relatively high friction coefficients and low wear resistance fitted with many counterface materials, additionally, the pitting corrosion for the MDO coated AI-alloy components, especially for a thinner alumina coating, often occurs in atmosphere circumstance due to the porous alumina coats. Therefore, a duplex treatment, combining a MDO coated ahumina thin layer with a TiN coating, prepared by magnetron sputtering (MS), has been investigated. The Vicker's microhardness, pin-on-disc, electrochemical measurement, salt spray, XRD and SEM tests were used to characterize and analyze the treated samples. The work demonstrates that the MDO/MS coated samples have a combination of a very low friction coefficient and good wear resistance as well as corrosion since the micro-holes on alumina coating are partly or fully covered by TiN material.

  • One of the problems in a refrigerator operation is the frost formation on a cold surface of the evaporator. The frost layer is formed by the sublimation of water vapor when the surface temperature is below the freezing point. This frost layer is usually porous and formed on the cold surface of the evaporator. The frost layer on the surface of a evaporator will make side effect such as thermal resistance. However, these important factors have not been used in determining the defrosting period. In this report, a prediction taking into account the change of the fin efficiency due to the growth of the frost layer.

  • In the present study, the heat transfer performance on the heat recovery ventilator with rotary disk were experimentally investigated. The temperature of entrance and exit of the heat recovery ventilator, air flow distribution of high temperature air and low temperature air, heat flux and the overall heat transfer coefficients are estimated from the experimental results. As the number of revolution of rotary disk, the air flow distribution increase, heat flux and overall heat transfer coefficients increase.

  • Calcium leaching is one of the main deterioration factors in concrete structures contact with water, such as dams, water treatment structures, and radioactive waste structures. It causes a porous microstructure and may be coupled with various harmful factors resulting in mechanical degradation of concrete. Several numerical modeling studies focused on the calcium leaching depth prediction. However, these required a lot of cost and time for many experiments and analyses. This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) approach to predict the leaching depth quickly and accurately. Totally 132 experimental data are collected for model training and validation. An optimal ANN model was proposed by ANN topology. Results indicate that the model can be applied to estimate the calcium leaching depth, showing the determination coefficient of 0.91. It might be used as a simulation tool for engineering problems focused on durability.

  • When the porous concrete is exposed to the external environment, the internal relative humidity changes from time to time due to the inflow and outflow of moisture. This change in moisture is affected by temperature. The temperature and humidity of concrete is dominant in the carbonation rate, the largest cause of deterioration of concrete. In this study, actual weather data were used as boundary conditions. A carbonization model of concrete temperature and humidity and calcium hydroxide was constructed to perform long-term analysis. There is a slight error in the carbonation formula of the Japanese Academy of Architecture applying the Kishtani coefficient, a representative experimental formula related to carbonization, and the analysis result values. However, considering that it behaves very similarly, it is thought that a fairly reliable numerical analysis model has been established. A slight error is believed to be due to the fact that the amount of residual calcium hydroxide in the carbonated site has not yet been clearly identified.

  • This paper introduces an improved shear deformation theory for analyzing the buckling behavior of functionally graded plates subjected to varying temperatures. The transverse shear strain functions employed satisfy the stress-free condition on the plate surfaces without requiring shear correction factors. The material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of the porous functionally graded plate are assumed temperature-dependent and exhibit continuous variation throughout the thickness, following a modified power-law distribution based on the volume fractions of the constituents. Moreover, the study considers the influence of porosity distribution on the buckling of the functionally graded plates. Thermal loads are assumed to have uniform, linear, and nonlinear distributions through the thickness. The obtained results, considering the effect of porosity distribution, are compared with alternative solutions available in the existing literature. Additionally, this study provides comprehensive discussions on the influence of various parameters, emphasizing the importance of accounting for the porosity distribution in the buckling analysis of functionally graded plates.
