  • Based on the results obtain from the investigation of Nak-Dong River District, it was classified as very thick, soft soil deposit. Furthermore, during the construction of structures large settlements are expected. Since large settlement affects the structures life, it is very important to accurately determine the consolidation of soil based on the obtained results. In this study piezocone test and laboratory test were performed to determine the consoildtion properties of Nak-Dong River District Pusan, Gyeong-Nam province. Degree of consoildation and the coefficient of consoildation obtained from the data of piezocone test and the results of the Oedometer test were compared and analyzed. Using the results the porewater pressure coefficient($B_q$) was obtained and the relationship with the Plasticity Index was also determined. From the results of this study the effects of the degree of consolidation and consolidation coefficient, and the porewater pressure coefficient and the Plasticity Index was determined.

  • In order to determine if there is any physiographic preference for sedimentary organic matter preservation, two gravity cores were collected off Gampo, East Sea: one from continental shelf and the other from continental slope. Concentrations of porewater nutrients and total $CO_2$ were all higher in the continental shelf station, St. A, than the continental slope station, St. B. Meanwhile, concentrations of porewater sulfate decreased more rapidly at St. A than at St. B. Sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen contents were lower and decreased more rapidly at St. A than at St. B. These data characters of porewater chemistry and sedimentary organic matter suggest that the organic matter is more actively decomposed at St. A than at St. B. At least over the study area, therefore, the sedimentary organic matter in the continental slope appears to be better preserved than that in the continental shelf.

  • The Shihung mine was restored in the early 90's after abandonment for 20 yews since 1973. Although disposed mine tailings were removed and the site was replaced by an incineration plant, still some residual mine tailings remain in the places including the old mine tailing ditposal area and the adjacent agricultural area. These residual mine tailings are prone to impose an adverse impact on the soil and groundwater and needs investigation for the potential contamination. Mine tailing samples were collected from the old tailing disposal area and the iii paddy. The porewater from the mine tailing were extracted and analysed to investigate chemical changes along the reaction path. Batch leaching tests were also carried out in the laboratory to find any supporting evidence found in the field analysis. Evidence of elemental leaching was confirmed both by the mine tailing and the porewater chemistry in them. The element concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn in the porewater exceed the standard for drinking water of Korean government and US EPA. Leaching of heavy metals from the mine tailing seem to be responsible for the contamination. In batch leaching test. heavy metals were either continuous1y released or declined rapidly. Combining the information with porewater variation with depths and the geochemical meodeling results, most of elements are controlled by dissolution and/or precipitation processes, with some solubility controlling solid phases (Cu, Pb, Fe and Zn). Batch leaching test conducted at fixed pH 4 showed much higher releases for the heavy metals up to 400 times (Zn) and this area is becoming more vulnerable to soil and groundwater pollution as precipitation pH shifts to acidic condition.

  • A amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus was exposed to Ag contaminated sediments to evaluate relative importance of various uptake routes (sediment, porewater, supplementary food) for Ag bioaccumulation in sediment-dwelling marine invertebrates. Additionally, influence of AVS (acid-volatile sulfide) on the partitioning of Ag to porewater and on the Ag bioavailability was determined to evaluate the utility of AVS criteria for the management of metal contaminated sediment. The experimental sediments were spiked with 4 levels of Ag (0.1-3.3 ${\mu}$mol Ag/g) and AVS concentrations were manipulated to 40 or <0.5 ${\mu}$mol/g, then equilibrated for >2 months to allow pore water/particulate distributions similar to nature. A L. plumulosus was incubated in the contaminated sediments with overlying water for 35d. During the exposure, the amphipods was fed with supplementary food ($TetraMin^{(R)}$) with or without Ag contamination. Following exposure, tissue Ag in L. plumulosus was strongly correlated with the weak acid extractable Ag in sediments ($r^{2}$=0.87, p<0.001). The ratio of AVS to Ag-SEM (Ag extracted simulaneouls with AVS) had a strong influence on porewater Ag concentration, consistent with previous studies. However, Ag bioaccumulation in L. plumulosus was not influenced by AVS concentrations. The amphipods fed Ag contaminated food took up ${\sim}$ 1.8 X Ag accumulated by the amphipods fed uncontaminated supplementary diet. The result suggests that the benthic invertebrates exposed to metal contaminated sediments would accumulate metals largely via ingestion of contaminated sediments and food, with minor contribution from dissolved sources of porewater and overlying water.

  • Membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) has been used to accurately quantify dissolved gases in liquid samples. In this study, the MIMS system was applied to measure dissolved methane in seawater and sediment porewater. To evaluate the accuracy of the measurement, liquid samples saturated with different methane partial pressure were prepared and the methane concentrations were quantified with the MIMS system. The measured values correspond well with the expected values calculated from solubility constants. The standard error of the measurements were $0.13{\sim}0.9%$ of the mean values. The distribution of dissolved methane concentration in seawater of the South Sea of Korea revealed that the physical parameters primarily control the methane concentration in sea water. The MIMS system was effective to resolve the small dissolved methane difference among water masses. The probe type inlet in MIMS system was proven to be effective to measure porewater methane concentration.

  • The stability of slurry trench system is closely associated with the characteristics of the filter cake (assumed impervious membrane) transferring the hydrostatic force of slurry to the trench walls. The effectiveness of this assumption in a wide range of trench systems has been examined with the aid of a Finite Element program. Build up of excess porewater pressure in the soil mass behind the filter cake is a function of the slurry density, the properties of filter cake, the ground conditions, time, the geometry of trench and the original ground water level. These factors were all investigated by the Finite Element Method. The most significant factors were found to be the ground conditions and the properties of filter cake.

  • Consolidation properties were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, sediment structures, particle size distributions and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests(CKoUC) were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomenons. Based on the carbon age dating results and profiles of geochemical properties, porewater chemistry, salinity and pH, it was founded that the upper silt/clay complex layer was deposited under marine condition while sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had been occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratio obtained from oedometer tests were greater than unity. Stress paths of samples behaved similar to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts proposed by Burland(1990) and Chandler(2000) showed that the marine deposits were geologically normally consolidated. These apparent overconsolidations can be explained by the fabric and chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition.

  • We used diatom and porewater data of two piston cores from the central subbasin and one from the western subbasin in the Bransfield Strait in the northern Antarctic Peninsula to elucidate the depositional mechanism of the layered diatom ooze. The layered diatom ooze is characterized by an abundance of organic carbon, biogenic silica, sulfde sulfur, and lower porewater sulfate concentration. This lack of pore-water sulfate concentration in the diatom ooze interval may reflect development of reducing micro-environment in which bacterially mediated sulfate reduction occurred. The negative relationship between the total organic carbon and sulfate contents, however, indicates that sulfate reduction was partly taking place but does not control organic carbon preservation in this unit. Rather, well-preserved Chaetoceros resting spores in the layered diatom ooze indicate a rapid sedimentation of the diatom as a result of repetitive iceedge blooms on the Bransfield shelf during the cold period (around 2500 yrs BP) when the permanent seaice existed on the shelf, During this period, it is expected that the downslope-flowing cold and dense water was also formed on the Bransfield shelf as a result of sea ice formation, playing an important role for the formation of layered diatom ooze in the Bransfield subbasins.

  • The seasonal and spatial changes in dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in Lake Kasumigaura, a shallow and eutrophic lake, were analyzed from October 1992 to October 1995. The proportion of T-DOC was classified by labile(L-DOC) and refractory DOC(R-DOC) on the basis of long-term incubation, fractionated the molecular weight of T-DOC by ultrafiltration. The porewater DOC were measured at sedimental surface of the central basin in order to evaluate the DOC released from the sediment. The proportion of L-DOC and R-DOC were accounted for about 15% and 85% of T-DOC in the central basin, respectively. The molecular weight(MW) distribution occupied some 60% of the low and medium MW. The horizontal variation of T-DOC concentrations trended to higher in the central basin than in the inlet of influent rivers, because of contribution by autochthonous organic carbon loading. The seasonal variation of T-DOC showed to higher summer than winter in the inlet of influent, but at the central basin it fluctuated little seasonally. During the high increase of porewater DOC in 1994 evaluated the high release possibility from the sediment surface (10cm). The present study suggests that autochthonous organic carbon loading must be controlled for improving the water quality of the eutrophic lakes.

  • This paper is results of experimental research on the effect of application of similarity related to permeability of soil on the consolidation behavior as centrifuge modeling of consolidation is performed with the centrifuge model facility. In this research, the permeability of soil was controlled by changing the viscosity of porewater as the mixed water with glycerin was used during the centrifuge model experiments. The effect of drainage path on consolidation was investigated by installing the vertical drains. A serise of centrifuge model tests with conditions of single vertical and radial horizontal drainage were carried out. Kaolinite and Jumunjin standard sand were used as soft clay and surcharges respectively during tests. For testing condition of single vertical drainage considering similarity of permeability, it was found that consolidation with mixed porewater with glycerin was delayed in comparisons sons with test results with water only. For conditions of horizontal drainage with vertical drains, a low permeability by changing the viscosity of pore water resulted in delayed degree of consolidation at an initial stage of consolidation. But, it predicted not much differences in settlement as long as the consolidation time was sufficiently long enough to finish consolidation. Consequently, it was found that similarity in permeability should be considered to be critical for the case of centrifuge model experiments related to consolidation with long drainage path.
