  • SnO2-based high-capacity anode materials are attractive candidate for the next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries since the theoretical capacity of SnO2 can be ideally extended from 781 to 1494 mAh g-1. Here 3D etched Cu foam is applied as a current collector for electron path and simultaneously a substrate for the SnO2 coating, for developing an integrated electrode structure. We fabricate the 3D etched Cu foam through an auto-catalytic electroless plating method, and then coat the SnO2 onto the self-supporting substrate through a simple sol-gel method. The catalytic dissolution of Cu metal makes secondary pores of both several micrometers and several tens of micrometers at the surface of Cu foam strut, besides main channel-like interconnected pores. Especially, the additional surface pores on etched Cu foam are intended for penetrating the individual strut of Cu foam, and thereby increasing the surface area for SnO2 coating by using even the internal of Cu foam. The increased areal capacity with high structural integrity upon cycling is demonstrated in the SnO2-coated 3D etched Cu foam. This study not only prepares the etched Cu foam using the spontaneous chemical reactions but also demonstrates the potential for electroless plating method about surface modification on various metal substrates.

  • Metal foams have a cellular structure consisting of a solid metal containing a large volume fraction of pores. In particular, open pores which are penetrable pores are necessary for industrial applications such as in high temperature filters and as support for catalysts. In this study, Fe foam with greater than 90% porosity and 2-mm pore size was successfully fabricated using a slurry coating process and the pore properties were characterized. The Fe and $Fe_2O_3$ powder mixing ratios were controlled to produce Fe foam samples with different pore sizes and porosity. First, the slurry was prepared through the uniform mixing of powders, distilled water, and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA). The amount of slurry coated with the PU foam increased with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ mixing powder ratio, but the shrinkage and porosity of the Fe foams decreased, respectively, with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ mixing powder ratio.

  • In this study we report a new method for the synthesis of a silica monolithic column bed with bimodal pores (throughpores and mesopores). The template induced synthesis method was used to direct bimodal pores simultaneously instead of the usual post base-treating method. Block polymer Pluronic F127 was chosen as a dual-function template to form hierarchically porous silica monolith with both macropores and mesopores. This is a simplification of the method of monolithic column preparation. Poly(ethylene glycol) was used as a partial substitute for F127 can effectively prevent shrinkage during the monolith aging process without losing much surface area (944 $m^2/g$ to 807 $m^2/g$). More importantly, the resultant material showed a much narrower mesopore size (centered at 6 nm) distribution than that made using only F127 as the template reagent, which helps the mass transfer process. The solvent washing method was used to remove the remaining organic template, and it was proved to be effective enough. The new synthesis method makes the fabrication of the silica monolithic column (especially capillary column) much easier. All the structure parameters indicate that monolith PFA05 prepared by the above method is a good material for separation, with the merits of much higher surface area than usual commercial HPLC silica particles, suitable mesopore volume, narrow mesopore size distribution, low shrinkage and it is easily prepared.

  • Directed energy deposition (DED) was adopted as a metal additive manufacturing method to develop a mold for the hot stamping process. The test piece was machined from Heatvar laminate material, and results were obtained through microstructure and defect observations, as well as hardness, tensile strength, and joint strength tests. 1) Spherical pores and irregular-shaped cavities were observed as lamination defects, and columnar dendrites formed in the structure, which tended to become coarse upon heat treatment. 2) The hardness of the heat-treated material (480HV) was slightly lower than that of the non-heat-treated material (500HV). 3) In the tensile test, the maximum tensile stress and strain of the heat-treated material were 1392 MPa and 15%, respectively, which were slightly higher than the values of 1381 MPa and 13%, respectively, for the non-heat-treated material. 4) In the case of the early final fracture in the tensile test, in most cases, pores or irregularly shaped cavities were observed at the fracture surface or near the surface. 5) In the joint strength test, most of the specimens finally fractured in the laminated metal area, and the fracture surface was intragranular. In addition, dimples formed over the entire area on the fracture surface of the fractured specimen after sufficient elongation.

  • Zeolites are aluminosilicates with a three dimensional framework structure enclosing pores occupied by cation and water molecules, both of which have considerable freedom of movement within certain limits. The ability of zeolites to exchange cation is one of the mere useful of their characteristics. The ion exchange condition of zeolites strongly affects absorption as well as other properties. The application, techniques of identification and evaluation of clinoptilolite, chabazite, mordenite and phillipsite are reviewed.

  • Concrete cooled to very low temperature cyclically is deteriorated by ice formation in micro-pores. Although the factors to the deterioration are various, storage at very low temperature is mentioned as one of the factors. In practice, storage of cryogenic structure is kept at very low temperatures, and as such, it is important to take into consideration the influence of storage at such low temperature on the deterioration of concrete. Thus, in this study, the influence of storage on the deterioration of concrete at minimum temperatures taking into consideration the different W/C and air content.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a representative polymer with the piezoelectric property has been studied since the 1960s. Crystalline structure of poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer is composed of five different crystal structure of the polymer as a semi-crystalline. Among the various crystal structures, ${\beta}-type$ crystal exhibits a piezoelectricity because the permanent dipoles are aligned in one direction. Generally ${\beta}-form$ crystal structure can be obtained through the transformation of the ${\alpha}-form$ crystal structure by the stretching and it can increase the amount through the after treatment as poling process after stretching. ${\beta}-form$ crystal structure the PVDF fibers produced by wet spinning is formed through a diffusion mechanism of a polar solvent in the coagulation bath. However, it has a disadvantage that the diffusion path of the solvent remains as pores in the fiber because the fiber solidification occurs simultaneously with the diffusion of the polar solvent. These pores play a role in reducing effect of poling process owing to effect of disturbances acting on the polarization by the electric field. In this work, the drying method using the microwave was introduced to remove more effectively the residual solvent and the pore within PVDF fibers produced through wet-spinning process and piezoelectric PVDF fibers was produced by transformation of the remaining ${\alpha}$ form crystal structure into ${\beta}-crystal$ structure through the stretching process.

  • Membrane disruption by an antimicrobial peptide, protegrin-1 (PG-1), was investigated by measuring the $^2H$ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra of 1-palmitoyl-$d_{31}$-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC_$d_{31}$) in the mixture of PG-1 and POPC_$d_{31}$ lipids deposited on thin cover-glass plates. The experimental line shapes of anisotropic $^2H$ SSNMR spectra measured at various peptide-to-lipid (P/L) ratios were simulated reasonably by assuming the mosaic spread of bilayers containing pore structures or the coexistence of the mosaic spread of bilayers and a fast-tumbling isotropic phase. Within a few days of incubation in the hydration chamber, the pores were formed by the peptide in the POPC_$d_{31}$ and POPC_$d_{31}$/cholesterol membranes. However, the formation of the pores was not clear in the POPC_$d_{31}$/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG) membrane. Over a hundred days after hydration, a rapidly rotating isotropic phase increased in the POPC_$d_{31}$ and the POPC_$d_{31}$/cholesterol membranes with the higher P/L ratios, but no isotropic phase appeared in the POPC_$d_{31}$/POPG membrane. Cholesterol added in the POPC bilayer acted as a stabilizer of the pore structure and suppressed the formation of a fast-tumbling isotropic phase.

  • We report the post-annealing effect of Sn doped ZnO (ZnO:Sn) thin film grown on sapphire (001) substrate using radio-frequency powder sputtering method. During thermal annealing in a vacuum atmosphere, the ZnO:Sn thin film is transformed into a porous thin film. Based on X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analyses, a possible mechanism for the production of pores is presented. Sn atoms segregate to form clusters that act as catalysts to dissociate Zn-O bonds. The Zn and O atoms subsequently vaporize, leading to the formation of pores in the ZnO:Sn thin film. We also found that Sn clusters were oxidized to form SnO or $SnO_2$ phases.

  • An alumina membrane with nano-sized pore array by anodic oxidation using the thin film aluminum deposited on silicon wafer was fabricated. It Is important that the sample prepared by metal deposition method has a flat aluminum surface and a good adhesion between the silicon wafer and the thin film aluminum. The oxidation time was controlled by observation of current variation. While the oxalic acid with 0.2 M was used for low voltage anodization under 100 V, the chromic acid with 0.1 M was used for high voltage anodization over 100 V. The nano-sized pores with diameter of $60\~120$ nm was obtained by low voltage anodization of $40\~80$ V and those of $200\~300$ nm was obtained by high voltage anodization of $140\~200$ V. The pore widening process was employed for obtaining the one-channel with flat surface because the pores of the alumina membrane prepared by the fixed voltage method shows the structure of two-channel with rough surface. Finally, the sample was immersed to the phosphoric acid with 0.1 M concentration to etching the barrier layer.
