Settlement of the piled raft can be estimated even after years of completing the construction of any structure over the foundation. This study is devoted to carry out numerical analysis by the finite element method of the consolidation settlement of piled rafts over clayey soils and detecting the dissipation of excess pore water pressure and its effect on bearing capacity of piled raft foundations. The ABAQUS computer program is used as a finite element tool and the soil is represented by the modified Drucker-Prager/cap model. Five different configurations of pile groups are simulated in the finite element analysis. It was found that the settlement beneath the piled raft foundation resulted from the dissipation of excess pore water pressure considerably affects the final settlement of the foundation, and enough attention should be paid to settlement variation with time. The settlement behavior of unpiled raft shows bowl shaped settlement profile with maximum at the center. The degree of curvature of the raft under vertical load increases with the decrease of the raft thickness. For the same vertical load, the differential settlement of raft of ($10{\times}10m$) size decreases by more than 90% when the raft thickness increased from 0.75 m to 1.5 m. The average load carried by piles depends on the number of piles in the group. The groups of ($2{\times}1$, $3{\times}1$, $2{\times}2$, $3{\times}2$, and $3{\times}3$) piles were found to carry about 24%, 32%, 42%, 58%, and 79% of the total vertical load. The distribution of load between piles becomes more uniform with the increase of raft thickness.

Tunnel problems relate to pore water pressure generally occur due to the restriction of groundwater flow into the tunnel which is generally caused by the deterioration of drainage systems. Previous studies have identified the problem as combined mechanical and hydraulic interaction occasions. In this study, detrimental effects of pore water pressure on the lining were investigated using the finite element method considering deterioration of the drainage system. Particularly, double-lined linings with drain-holes are considered. Deterioration of drainage system is represented as blockages of drain-holes. It is identified that the secondary lining ran be influenced by the deterioration of drainage system. It is shown that a tunnel with all drain-holes blocked moved upward, and unbalanced drain-hole blocking may result in torsional behavior of the tunnel which causes significant damages to the secondary linings.

A series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the cyclic shear stress strength characteristics of sands with respect to the silt content. Silty sand was collected around the basin of Nak-Dong River and remolded in laboratory with the range of silt content 0~50% in sand located. As results, with the change of silt content cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) at N=10 showed the maximum value at 5% and the minimum at 20% in all relative density. The development tendency of the pore water pressure analyzed by the relationship cyclic ratio and pore water pressure ratio is unrelated the change of CSR varying silt content. Comparing the results of the void ratio and skeleton void ratio after consolidation, CSR varying silt content was much affected by skeleton void ratio which is known to affect shear behavior of silty sand.
The 2017 Pohang earthquake caused damage to quay structures due to liquefaction. Liquefaction occurs when effective stress is lost due to an increase in excess pore water pressure during an earthquake. As a result, the damage caused to the pier-type quay wall was identified and the damage caused by liquefaction was analyzed. In addition, in the case of improved ground, damage occurred due to liquefaction of the lower sand layer due to the difference in stiffness from the soft rock layer, so additional numerical analysis was performed assuming non-liquefaction ground. There are several factors that affect the increase in excess pore water pressure ratio, such as the relative density of the ground and the magnitude of the input seismic acceleration. Therefore, this study performed numerical analysis for Cases 1 to 3 by increasing the magnitude of the input acceleration, and in the case of improved ground, damage occurred due to liquefaction of the lower sand layer, so the analysis was performed assuming non-liquefaction ground. As a result, the improved ground requires additional reinforcement when there is liquefied ground below, and the horizontal displacement of the pier-type quay piles was reduced by about two times.
This study deals with the use of porewater pressure transducers to evaluate the stability of a fill dam through the correlation between the porewater pressure and water level. As a result of performing principal component analysis on a total of eight porewater pressure transducers installed in the fill dam, they were distributed into three groups. It was found to be distributed as internal, external, and top based on seepage line in the dam body. The correlation coefficient between porewater pressures and water level in group A located inside the seepage line indicated 0.94 to 1.00 and they are showing a strong positive linear relationships. It indicates that maintenance of the dam is required by the porewater pressure transducers of the group A. In addition, a linear regression analysis was performed with the determination coefficients of the group A of 0.89 to 0.99. It was found that the pore water pressure can be predicted and the stability of the dam can be evaluated by comparing it with the currently measured values when the water level is fixed as an explanatory variable.
A novel system to thicken the concentrated colloidal solution from membrane water treat-ment processes was developed. A hollow-fiber microfilter(hydrophilic polyethylene nominal pore size 0.1 ${\mu}$m total surface area 0.42 m2) was installed in an acrylic housing that has an aeration port 5 cm below the membrane and a clarifier in the bottom. The concentrate was uniformly supplied from the top of the housing. Bacuum filtration caused downward flow of concentrate and as a result thickening interface. The addition of poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) resulted in rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) and in no improvement of the filtered water turbidity and thickening process. Two types of con-centrate and concentrate turbidity had little effect on the increase of TMP and concentrate thickening. It was observed that for the same height of membrane housing membrane surface area to housing volume (A/V) ratio had significant effect on the increase of TMP. When the housing volume was increased ten times the increasing rate of TMP was three times faster as compared to the original housing. A hydraulic model successfully simulated the formation and sedimentation of thickening interface.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the purity variation of the alumina ceramics on the water lubrication mechanism. The annular surface of wear testing specimens of the alumina ceramics with different alumina purity against STB2 was rubbed in the distilled water under various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. The friction coefficient decreased lowered with formation of corrosion products due to the tribochemical reation as the sliding speed and contact load was increased. With increased sliding speed, the lower purity of 85 percent contribute largely to even degree of the friction surface, even it have about $\mu$ of 0.3 degree by the influence of a pore and impurities SiO$_{2}$. The friction surface of ceramics protacted by oxide was transfer from STB2.
A coverage of about 1 μm-sized pores of a membrane filter by four monolayers of maleic acids copolymers and poly(allylamine) (PAA) was attained by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique through a covalent cross-linking followed a polyion complexation at the air-water interface. The copolymers were prepared to have side chains of hydrocarbon tail, carboxyl, and/or oligoether in the repeat unit. The surface pressure-area isotherms showed that the monolayers on an aqueous PAA have more expanded area than on pure water. The monolayers were transferable on a calcium fluoride substrate and a fluorocarbon membrane filter as Y deposition type, and the resulting LB films were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A polymer network produced through interchain amide formation was confirmed in as-deposited films. The films were heat-treated in order to complete the cross-linking. SEM observation of the heat-treated film on a porous membrane filter showed that the four layer film was sufficiently stable to cover the filter pore of about 1 μm. Immersion of the film in water or in chloroform did not cause any change in its appearance on SEM and in FT-IR spectra.

The purpose of this paper was to confirm the application of the equation of the soil-water characteristic curve on an unsaturated soil. To this ends, a series of suction test was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil which is located in Korea, using the modified pressure extractor apparatus. And it was carried out to analyze the experimental parameters which can describe the soil-water characteristics, were determined by using the data obtained from the experiment. From the results, it was found that the matric suction was varied according to the grain size distribution, amount of fine grain particle and void ratio. Also it was found that the residual volumetric water content was decreased with the void ratio, but the index related air entry value, the soil parameter related water content and the parameter with residual water content were increased with the void ratio. And the application of equation of the soil-water characteristic curve was confirmed for the various conditions and the various state by the comparison between the volumetric water content measured by the experiment and the predicted values.

For the design of composite breakwater as representative one of the coastal and harbor structures, it has been widely discussed by the researchers about the relation between the behavior of excess-pore-water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed caused by the wave load and its structural failure. Recently, the researchers have tried to verify its relation through the numerical simulation technique. The above researches through numerical simulation have been mostly applied by the linear and nonlinear analytic methods, but there have been no researches through the numerical simulation by the strongly nonlinear mutiphase flow analytical method considering wave-breaking phenomena by VOF method and turbulence model by LES method yet. In the preceding research of this study, olaFlow model based on the mutiphase flow analytical method was applied to the nonlinear interaction analysis of regular wave-composite breakwater-seabed. Also, the same numerical techniques as preceding research are utilized for the analysis of irregular wave-composite breakwater-seabed in this study. Through this paper, it is investigated about the horizontal wave pressures, the time variations of excess-pore-water pressure and their frequency spectra, mean flow velocities, mean vorticities, mean turbulent kinetic energies and etc. around the caisson, rubble mound of the composite breakwater and seabed according to the changes of significant wave height and period. From these results, it was found that maximum nondimensional excess-pore water pressure, mean turbulent kinetic energy and mean vorticity come to be large equally on the horizontal plane in front of rubble mound, circulation of inflow around still water level and outflow around seabed is formed in front of rubble caisson.
