Comparison of Properties of Waterborne Polyurethanes Containing Various Polyols (다양한 폴리올을 갖는 수분산 폴리우레탄의 특성 비교)

  • Various waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with three different types of polyol such as ester type polyol [adipic acid (A)/BD/3-methyl-1,5-pentandiol (MPD) and A/BD]//carbonate type polyol (C/HD/MPD, C/HD, C/BD)//ether type polyol (PTMG) were prepared in this study. This study focused on the effect of polyol type on the properties of WPU. Soft segment Tg (Tgs), 100% elastic modulus and tensile strength were highest when using carbonate polyol, followed by ester polyol and ether polyol, while those of elongation showed the opposite trend. The WPU synthesized with MPD - containing polyol showed lower Tgs, 100% elasticity and strength, and higher elongation than MPD - free WPU. The % transmittance and transparency of the WPU film containing the MPD component was superior to that of the WPU film containing no MPD component, and it was found that the film based on carbonate polyol was slightly better than the film based on ester polyol and ether polyol.

  • Polyurethane (PU) synthesized from 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate having high functionality (f=2.9) and polyester polyol have been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR). From the DSC measurement of polyurethane, a single transition temperature ($T_g$) was observed. This result indicates that polyurethanes synthesized in this work have homogeneous network structure due to high functionality of diisocyanate. It was also found that the $T_g$ of polyurethane was increased as hard segment content was increased. The results from DMTA measurement are consistent with DSC results. In order to investigate the effect of thermal annealing on the $T_g$ of polyurethane, the samples were annealed at various annealing conditions. $T_gs$ of polyurethanes were found to increased with annealing temperature. From swelling experiment and FT-IR studies, it was found that the $T_g$ was increased as crosslinking density of polyurethane was increased.

Investigation of Fluorescent Shape Memory Polyurethanes Grafted with Various Dyes

  • Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU), grafted with a fluorescent dye (Rhodamine, Mehylene violet, or Fluorescein) through an allophanate linking, was tested for the fluorescence and the shape recovery effect. The main chain of SMPU was composed of 4,4'-methylenebis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI), poly(tetramethyleneglycol) (PTMG), and 1,4-butanediol (BD), and a fluorescent dye was connected through a second MDI linked to the carbamate moiety of the main chain. Three series of SMPU, differing according to their dye content, were prepared to compare their shape recovery and fluorescence properties. In tensile mechanical property, maximum stress increased up to 350% compared to the linear SMPU, and strain remained above 2000%. Shape recovery went to as high as 97%, and remained almost same after repetitive shape recovery test cycles. Finally, the fluorescence emission of SMPU was demonstrated in the luminescence spectrum and fluorescent light emission pictures. In addition, the response of SMPU to external stimuli such as metal ions was investigated.

The Toughness of Polyurethane and Epoxy Resins IPNs (폴리우레탄-에폭시 IPNs의 강인성)

  • Interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) were prepared from castor oil-type polyurethanes(PUs) and epoxy resin. Two types of PU were prepared by using polypropylene ether glycol(PPG) as a chain extending agent and caster oil(CO) as a crosslinking agent. COPU/epoxy simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks(SINs) based on CO had a better compatibility over the all composition than PPGPU/epoxy SINs based on PPG. The flexural strength of all PPGPU/epoxy SINs was decreased with decreasing entanglement of networks. COPU/epoxy SINs showed the higher fracture toughness and mechanial properties than the PPGPU/epoxy SINs. Fracture surfaces of all of the SINs showed the localized shear deformation and crack deflection rather than generation of stress whitening associated with the cavitation.

  • This paper presents the actuation performance of a conducting shape memory polyurethane (CSMPU) actuator. We introduced a concept of shape memory polyurethane activated by electric power while conventional shape memory polyurethanes are activated by external heat source. A conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator was manufactured by adding cabon nano-tube to conventional shape memory polyurethane. The main problem of the previous CSMPU was bad dispersion of carbon nano-tubes in polyurethane. In this paper, we have tried to find manufacturing method to solve the dispersion problem. With a lot of elaborative works, we have developed conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator with good electrical performance. The actuation performance of the developed conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator was measured and assessed.

Curing Behavior of Epoxy Resins Using Aminolysis Products of Waste Polyurethanes as Hardeners

  • We carried out aminolyses of various rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) using diethylene triamine and studied application of the aminolysis products as hardners of epoxy resins. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was used for the study on the curing behavior of epoxy resin with the aminolysis product employing differential scanning calorimeter. Curing reaction of the epoxy resin is generally known to be autocatalytic second order reaction. We found that the curing reaction of the epoxy resin with the aminolysis product of rigid PUF did not show autocatalytic characteristics but followed the n-th order kinetics. The activation energy of the curing reaction of the epoxy resin with the aminolysis product of rigid PUF made from sugar based polyol was slightly lower than that of the epoxy resin with aminolysis product of rigid with made from amine based polyol.

A Study on the Physical Properties and Adhesion Characteristics of Polyurethane Resin (폴리우레탄 수지의 물성 및 접착특성에 관한 연구)

  • The polyurethane was synthesized by the reaction of polycaprolactone diol(Mw 2000), 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender. Also, the modified polyurethane polymers based on liquid polybutadiene as a part of soft segment and dimethylolpropionic acid as a chain extender, giving polyurethane with various polarity, were synthesized. The thermal, mechanical, adhesion properties and water contact angles of the polyurethanes were examined. From the result of the water contact angle, the polarity of the acid modified PU containing 6% acid content was unchanged but mechanical and adhesion properties were improved. The water contact angles on polybutadiene modified PU films were increased with increasing polybutadiene content. The mechanical properties of the polybutadiene modified PU were higher than that of acid modified PU. However, the mechanical properties were reduced as polybutadiene content increased. The result is presumably due to phase separation between hard segment and soft segment. The peel strength of the polyurethane introduced with 5wt% polybutadiene was improved about 150% than that of unmodified PU. The same as the mechanical properties, the more polybutadiene was introduced, the lower peel strength was obtained.

  • Resource recovery and recycling of materials and products including polyurethanes are viewed as a necessity in today's society. The problems of recycling polyurethane wastes has major technological, economic and ecological significance because polyurethane itself is relatively expensive and its disposal by burning is also costly. In general, the recycling methods for polyurethane could be classified as mechanical, chemical and physical. In the chemical recycling method, there ate hydrolysis, glycolysis, pyrolysis and aminolysis. This study was carried out glycolysis using new method such as sonication and catalyzed reaction. There are kinds of recycled polyols were produced by current method(glycolysis) but, this study were with catalyzed reaction and sonication as decomposers and the chemical properties were analyzed. The reaction results in the formation of polyester urethane diols and then the OH value which is determined by the quantity of diol used for the glycolysis conditions.   • The pyrolysis kinetics of polyurethanes synthesized from polycaprolactone diol (PCL) and diisocyanate (HDI, $H_{12}MDI$) using catalysts such as dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) were studied by a thermogravimetric (TG) technique, which involved heating the sample at the rates of 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$/min. The effect of the kind of diisocyanate and the hard segment contents on the activation energy and reaction order were examined at conversions ranging from 1 to $100\%$. The activation energies at first increased slowly with increasing conversion. Also, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the structural differences in each polyurethane. DSC can reveal the melting behavior, in terms of the glass transition temperature ($T_g$), which is known to vary as a function of the stoichiometry and processing conditions.

Synthesis and Properties of Polyester System Polyurethane without Solvent (무용제 반응에 의한 폴리에스테르계 폴리우레탄의 합성 및 특성)

  • Polyurethanes(PUs) were synthesized by reaction of isophorone diisocyanate, acetylbutyl citrate, and 3 types of polycaprolactone diol. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR and NMR spectrometer. And, their thermal and mechanical properties were measured by TGA ud UTM. The effective network chain lengths ($\bar{M}_c$), measured by compressive modulus apparatus, were about $8000\~24000$ g/mol. As crosslinking density and amount of hard segment increased, tensile strength increased and elongation decreased. As the crosslinking density of PUs increased, thermal property inproved. When the ratio of NCO/OH is 1.1, maximum crosslinking density was achieved.
