Effect of Variation in the Molecular Structure on the Miscibility of Modified Polystyrene/Polymethacrylate Blends (Modified Polystyrene/Polymethacrylate 블렌드의 상용성에 대한 분자구조 변화의 영향)

  • The component polymer was modified to enable the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the immiscibile polystyrene(PS)/polymethacrylate(PMA) blends. The mole percentages of hydroxystyrene of the poly(styrene-co-4-hydroxystyrene) copolymer(modified polystyrene, MPS) were controlled to 7%, 10% and 18%, respectively. MPS was used with PMA to study the variation of the miscibility in blends. PMA which had such different length of side chain as methyl, butyl, hexyl and ethylhexyl, respectively, was selected to study the effect of side chain length on the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. As the hydroxyl content of MPS increased, the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding increased. The length of side chain of PMA had enormous effect on the miscibility of blend as confirmed from the result of cloud point measurement. As the length of side chain increased, the formation and the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonding decreased severely due to the steric effect and the increased chain mobility.

  • The new method of x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) [1] is developed recently for probing the dynamics of surface height fluctuations as a function of lateral length scale. Measurements were performed on supported polystyrene (PS) films of thicknesses varying from 84 to 333 nm at temperatures above the PS glass transition temperature. Within a range of wave vectors spanning $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}$ $nm^{-1}$, good agreement is found between the measured surface dynamics and the theory of overdamped thermal capillary waves on thin films. Quantitatively, the data can be accounted for using the viscosity of bulk PS. (omitted)

  • We prepared polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PSb-P2VP) lamellar films which is hydrophobic block-hydrophilic polyelectrolyte block polymer have 57 kg/mol-b-57 kg/mol. The result of UV-visible absorption spectra supported that effect of poly(ethylene oxide) on the band gap tuning of PS-P2VP photonic gel like salt effect.

  • 본 연구에서는 기체분리용 고분자 분리막을 박막화하기 위하여 기체의 선택도와 투과도가 서로 상이한 celluloseacetate(CA), polyvinylchloride(PVC) 및 polystyrene(PS) 등의 고분자용액을 사용하여 수면전개법에 수면 전개기구와 박막의 구조적 특성을 연구하였고, 또한 기체 분리막으로서의 이 수면전개막을 개발하기 위하여 CA, PVC, PS 단일 적층막, CA-PVC 복합적 층막, PVC/PS 혼합적층막의 형태로 제막하여 기체분리효과를 검토하였다.

A Study on the PP/PS Blends with Nylon 6 Reactive Compatibilizers (Nylon6계 반응 상용화제에 의한 PP/PS 블렌드에 관한 연구)

  • RPP(maleic-anhydride grafted PP)and OPS(oxazoline grafted PS) do not react to each other, and thus show immiscibility. In this study, Nylons was added to RPP/OPS blend systems, as a reactive compatibilizer for enhancing the miscibility of the blends. When Nylon6 was added to the blends of RPP and OPS, RPP/Nylon6/OPS was produced. The effects of the molar ratio of Nylon6 on the RPP-Nylon6-OPS reaction were studied. Torque test and FT-IR analysis have been carried out to investigate the reaction of RPP/Nylon6/OPS system. The reaction torgue ratio and reaction efficiency show the maximum values at 1 : 0.66 : 1 and 1 : 1 : 1 (in moles) for RPP/Nylon6/OPS. In the RPP/Nylon6/OPS blends, their mechanical properties were changed with the molar ratio of Nylon6 and showed the highest value at molar ratio of 1.5. Physical properties and compatibility of RPP/Nylon6/OPS were compared with those of PP/Nylon6/OPS. Consequently, RPP/Nylon6/OPS plays a proper role as a reactive compatibilizer to the PP/PS blend system.

  • The effect of latex particle size on rheological and electrical properties of latex-blended polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites was investigated. Mono-dispersed PS particles synthesized either by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization or by dispersion polymerization were mixed with MWCNTs under ultrasonication, and freeze-dried to prepare the nanocomposites. As the MWCNT content increased, storage modulus, complex viscosity and electrical conductivity were substantially increased. The increase of storage modulus and complex viscosity was higher for larger PS particles. The effect of particle size on electrical properties was different depending on MWCNT content. With lower MWCNT content, the nanocomposite prepared by smaller PS particles showed higher electrical conductivity, but the opposite result was given as the content increased.

  • Write-once-read-many times (WORM) 메모리 소자는 1회에 한해 쓰기 가능한 저장 장치로서 반영구적인 기록 보존을 필요로 하는 분야에서 널리 사용되는 저항 구조의 비휘발성 메모리 소자이다. 무기물을 사용한 WORM 메모리 소자의 제작과 소자의 전기적 특성에 관한 많은 연구가 활발히 진행되었으나 절연성 고분자인 Polystyrene (PS) 박막에 분산된 ZnO 나노입자를 이용한 무기물/유기물 복합 구조의 WORM 메모리 소자에 관한 연구는 상대적으로 미흡하다. 본 연구에서는 ZnO 나노입자가 분산되어 있는 PS를 스핀코팅 방법으로 박막 형태로 증착하여 WORM 메모리 소자를 제작하고 전기적인 성질을 조사하였다. 소자를 제작하기 위해 ZnO 나노 입자와 PS를 용매인 N,N-디메틸포메미드에 혼합하여 소자를 제작하였다. 그 후 하부 전극인 ITO가 증착되어 있는 유리 기판 위에 ZnO와 PS가 분산되어 있는 고분자 용액을 스핀 코팅 방법으로 도포한 후에 열을 가해 용매를 제거하여 박막을 형성하였다. ZnO 나노입자가 분산되어 있는 PS 박막 위에 Al을 상부 전극으로서 증착하였다. 전압을 인가하여 측정한 전류-전압 특성은 1.5 V에서 소자의 전도도가 크게 향상이 되는 것을 관측하였다. 읽기 전압에서 낮은 전도도(OFF 상태)와 높은 전도도 (ON 상태)의 크기는 $10^3$으로 이며, ON 상태가 된 이후에는 OFF 상태로 전환되지 않는 전형적인 WORM 메모리 소자의 특성이 관측되었다. ZnO 나노 입자가 없이 PS 만으로 박막을 제작한 소자는 쌍안정성 특성이 나타나지 않았다. 따라서 소자에서 전류 쌍안정성으로 나타난 원인은 PS안에 분산되어 있는 ZnO 나노입자에 기인함을 알 수 있었다. 제작된 WORM 메모리 소자의 기억 유지 특성에 대한 결과는 장시간에 걸친 측정에서 ON 전류 및 OFF 전류의 변화가 거의 없었다. 이 실험 결과는 제작된 무기물/유기물 복합 구조를 가진 WORM 메모리 소자는 우수한 기억 특성을 가지고 있으며 반영구적인 메모리 소자로 사용할 수 있음을 제시하고 있다.

Synthesis of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Polystyrene (MWCNT/PS) Composites by Solution Process and Their Thermal Behavior (용액공정을 이용한 다중벽 탄소 나노튜브/폴리스티렌(MWCNT/PS) 복합체 합성 및 열적 거동)

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube/polystyrene (MWCNT/PS) composites with various MWCNT contents were prepared by using a solution process with an aid of surfactant. Particularly, PS's with 3 different molecular weights (${\bar{M}}_n$ = 101500 g/mole for PS-1, ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 89900 g/mole for PS-2, and ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 85000 g/mole for PS-3) were used in this study. Thermal behavior of these composites was examined by using an oscillator rheometer at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$, of above and below the critical flow temperature ($T_{cf}{\sim}195^{\circ}C$) of PS matrix, respectively. The storage and loss modulus, and the complex viscosity of these composites increased with increasing MWCNT content at both temperatures. Largest increases in the frequency-dependent moduli and complex viscosity were observed between 2 wt% and 5 wt% of MWCNTs at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$. Only the composite at $210^{\circ}C$ showed the rheological phase transition from a viscous-dominant to an elastic-dominant behavior of the composites at a certain MWCNT content. The MWCNT content at the rheological phase transition of MWCNT/PS composites generally increased with decreasing molecular weight of PS, and was measured to be 3.5 wt% for MWCNT/PS-1, 3.2 wt% for MWCNT/PS-2, and 3.0 wt% for MWCNT/PS-3 composites.

Inhibition of Foodborne Pathogens on Polystyrene, Sausage Casings, and Smoked Salmon Using Nonthermal Plasma Treatments (비열 플라즈마 처리를 이용한 polystyrene, 소시지 케이싱, 그리고 훈제연어에서의 식중독균 저해)

  • The effects of nonthermal plasma treatments against Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes living on polystyrene (PS), sausage casings, and smoked salmon were investigated. Inoculated PS, casings, and salmon were treated with nonthermal plasma generated with helium (5 L/min) or with both helium (5 L/min) and oxygen (100 mL/min) at 60 Hz and 30 kV/cm for 2, 5, or 10 min. S. Typhimurium exhibited the highest sensitivity to the helium-used treatment. The greatest reduction (3.9${\pm}$0.8 log$CFU/cm^2$) was observed with L. monocytogenes on PS after the treatment with the mixed gas for 5 min. The treatment with the mixed gas inhibited L. monocytogenes on casings and salmon by 0.5${\pm}$0.3 log$CFU/cm^2$ and 1.0${\pm}$0.3 log CFU/g, respectively. Different treatment times did not result in different reductions of L. monocytogenes on both casings and salmon. The types of treatment gas and material of contamination need to be considered for evaluating the antimicrobial effects of nonthermal plasma treatments.

Anhydrous Polymer Electrolyte Membranes Prepared From Polystyrene-b-Poly (hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) Block Copolymer (Polystyrene-b-Poly(hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) 블록 공중합체를 이용한 무가습 고분자 전해질막)

  • A block copolymer of polystyrene-b-poly (hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate), PS-b-PHEMA, was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and crosslinked with 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid (IDA) via esterification of the -OH groups of PHEMA in the block copolymer and the -COOH groups of IDA. Upon doping with $H_3PO_4$ to form imidazole-$H_3PO_4$ complexes, the proton conductivity of the membranes continuously increased as the content of $H_3PO_4$ increased. In addition, both the tensile strength and the elongation at break increased with IDA content. A proton conductivity of 0.01 S/cm at $100^{\circ}C$ was obtained for the PS-b-PHEMA/IDA/$H_3PO_4$ membrane with [HEMA]:[IDA]:[$H_3PO_4$] = 3:4:4 under anhydrous conditions. All of the PS-b-PHEMA/IDA/$H_3PO_4$ membranes were thermally stable up to $350^{\circ}C$, as revealed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).
