Quercetin Reduces Chemotactic Activity of Porcine Peripheral Blood Polymorphonuclear Cells

  • Quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, exhibits a strong anti-inflammatory activity. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of quercetin on chemotactic activity of peripheral blood polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) to culture supernatant from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In addition, we determined whether this effect is related to interleukin (IL)-8 and changes in cytoskeleton. The chemotactic activity of PMNs was evaluated by a modified Boyden chamber assay. Total cellular filamentous (F)-actin levels were measured by method of fluorescence microscopy. The levels of IL-8 mRNA and protein were measured by real time polymerase reaction method and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Quercetin (0-50 µM) itself has no chemoattractant effect for PMNs. The culture supernatant from PBMCs (2 × 106 cells/mL) treated with LPS (1 ㎍/mL) showed remarkable increase in chemotaxis of PMNs. However, this effect was reduced dose-dependently by treatment with quercetin. In addition, PBMCs treated with LPS revealed enhanced levels in IL-8 protein and mRNA. Co-treatment of LPS with quercetin (50 µM) in PBMCs decreased IL-8 production and expression. Treatment of quercetin (0-50 µM) on PMNs to rpIL-8 (10 nM) decreased dose-dependently the chemotactic activity of PMNs. Treatment of quercetin on PMNs to IL-8 also reduced their total cellular F-actin level. These results suggested that quercetin attenuates chemotactic activity of PMNs, which is mediated by down-regulation of IL-8 production from LPS-stimulated PBMCs and inhibition of F-actin polymerization in PMNs.

  • The NTC thermistors were sintered by using microwave hybrid heating method at $1100^{\circ}C$~$1300^{\circ}C$ and those electrical properties were investigated. The obtained $B_{25^{\circ}C/85^{\circ}C}$ values from temperature dependence of electrical resisitivity were around 3100~3200 K which were almost the same values as conventionally sintered ones. Compared with conventional sintering process, this process could complete whole sintering process within 20 minutes. This the processing time and energy consumption could be reduced through this rapid heating by using microwave hybrid heating.t there were showed only two peaks, glycolide melting peak and lower molecular weight melting peak without lauryl alcohol. Conversion increased slowly with the reaction time up to 50 minutes, and then gave a sudden increase above that. The reaction time to disappear in glycolide melting peak during polymerization was shortened with the increase of lauryl alcohol content. Zero-shear viscosity of polyglycolic acid decreased with the increase of free acid content in glycolide.ssional energy and bending hysteresis increased. \circled3 Surface characteristics such as friction coefficient and thickness variation of highly shrinkage fabrics became relatively roughened state. \circled4 Since stiffened and roughened characteristics of highly shrinkage fabrics, drapabilities of them were significantly lowered. Additionally thermal insulation property of high shrinkage fabric was higher than that of low shrinkage fabric due to bulky and thickened feature. From the results, it is considered that the silk fabrics with high filling shrinkage have the good bulkiness and heat keeping properties and thus they have the suitable characteristics for high quality men's and women's formal garments.

  • The purposes of this study were to evaluate microleakage of Biodentine, one of the tricalcium silicate based pulp-capping materials, and to compare the shear bond strength between composite resin and Biodentine with different setting times. For microleakage evaluation, 70 bovine teeth were used. Cavities were formed on the labial surfaces and filled with Biodentine. The teeth were divided into seven groups, each consisting of 10 teeth. The specimens were prepared by applying the composite resin on the upper side after different setting times. To evaluate shear bond strength, 210 acrylic resin blocks with central grooves were prepared, and the grooves were filled with Biodentine. The acrylic resin blocks were divided into seven groups of 30 specimens each, and the specimens were prepared by applying the composite resin on the upper side after different setting times. In samples with setting time of 24 hours or longer period, the microleakage between composite resin and Biodentine was reduced significantly while the shear bond strength increased to offset the polymerization shrinkage of the composite resin. Setting Biodentine for more than 24 hours before composite resin restoration would lead to more favorable clinical result.

  • In order to improve the properties of the copolymer and the terpolymer that was used as removal-type pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA), we synthesized quaterpolymer with the variation of the types of monomer, initiator, and solvent, and concentration, the monomer/solvent ratio, reaction temperature and time. and determined the properties of this adhesive: the viscosity, molecular weight, conversion, solid content and structure of polymer. The prepared polymer was crosslinked by changing the type of crosslinking agent and concentration, and then we investigated the characteristics or adhesive such as peel adhesion, shear adhesion, heat resistance, weathering resistance and peel adhesion to aging. The optimum performance of RA/2- EHA/MMA/2-HEMA as a PSA were obtained when benzoyl peroxide was used as an initiator with the reactant mixture consisted of 80% BA and 2-EHA, 15%, MMA, and 5% 2-HFMA. The optimum reaction temperature and time were $80^{\circ}C$ and 8 hours, respectively. For BA/2-EHA/MMA/AA, the optimum performance was obtained when the polymerization was performed at the monomer composition of 80% BA/2-EHA, 15% MMA, and 5% AA. BPO was used as initiator and the optimum reaction temperature and time were identical to those of BA/2-EHA/MMA/ 2-HEMA. Isocyanate and melamine were used to crosslink BA/2-EHA/MMA/2-HEMA and BA/2-EHA/MMA/AA, respectively. No effect on the type of cross-linking agent on the peel adhesion was observed with aging. The quarterpolymers crosslinked with melamine left residues on the counter surface after weathering resistance test, while the polymers crosslinked with isocyanate did not.

Hydrophobic Coating on Fish Feed Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Polymerization (유전체장벽방전 플라즈마 중합을 이용한 양어 사료의 소수성 코팅)

  • A plasma hydrophobic coating on commercial fish feed was conducted to prolong the floating time of feed, thereby enhancing the feed consumption rate and reducing the contamination of water in fish farms. The hydrophobic coating on the fish feed was prepared using an atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), toluene and n-hexane as the precursors. The effect of the parameters such as input power, precursor type and coating time on the coating performance were examined. The physicochemical properties of the coating layer were analyzed using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and a contact angle (CA) analyzer. The water CA increased after the coating preparation, indicating that the surface changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. The FTIR characterization revealed that the hydrophobic layer was comprised of functional groups such as $CH_3$, Si-O-Si and Si-C. As a result of the hydrophobic coating, the floating time of the fish feed increased from several seconds to 3 minutes, which suggested that the plasma coating method could be a viable means for practical applications. Compared to the water CA measured as soon as the coating layer was prepared, the 6-day aged sample exhibited a substantial CA increase, confirming the aging effect on the improvement of the hydrophobicity.

Adsorption Properties for Heavy Metals Using Hybrid Son Exchange Fibers with Sulfonated PONF-g-Styrene by Radiation Polymerization and Cation Exchange Resin (방사선 중합 설폰화 PONF-g-스티렌과 양이온교환수지 복합 이온교환섬유의 중금속 흡착 특성)

  • In this study, Sulfonated PONF-g-styrene ion exchange fibers were synthesized by radiation induced graft copolymerization. And also, hybride ion exchange fibers, which was combined sulfonated PONF-g-styrene fibers and cationic ion exchange resin, were fabricated by hot melt adhesion method and then their adsorption properties were investigated. ion exchange capacity and water content of hybrid ion exchange fibers increased as compared with those of bead and ion exchange fiber. Their maximum values were 4.76 meq/g and 23.5%, respectively. Adsorption breakthrough time for mercury of hybrid ion exchange fiber was slower than those of bead resin and fibrous ion exchanger. It's value was 130 minutes. Their breakthrough time become short as increasing of pH, and concentration. The initial breakthrough time was observed before and after 10 minutes as increasing of concentration. The adsorption of hybrid ion exchange fibers for $Hg^{2+}\;Pb^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}$ among heavy metals in the mixed solution was observed before 20 min. And also, The adsorption for $Hg^{2+}$ among the heavy metals by hybride ion exchange fibers was observed.

A STUDY OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITE RESIN POLYMERIZATION WITH ARGON LASER (아르곤 레이저에 의한 복합레진의 중합시 물성 변화에 관한 연구)

  • After polymerizing composite resin with argon laser and visible light, four test, to be concretely, measurement of compressive strength using Instron testing machine, surface microhardness using Rockwell hardness tester, quantitative analysis of residual monomer using HPLC and analysis of degree of conversion using FTIR, were accomplished. Test groups were a sort of specimen with 3mm diameter, 4mm thickness for measuring compressive strength, two sort of specimen with 7mm diameter, 2mm and 3mm thickness for measuring surface microhardness, quantitative analysing of residual monomer after curing and measuring the degree of conversion, each were divided by six groups according to the condition of light exposure. In case of argon laser, in 1.0W and 0.5W output, the exposure time for specimen were 5 sec, 10 sec respectiyely. In case of visible light, the exposure time for specimen were 20 sec, 40 sec respectively. The test were accomplished and following results were obtained. 1. Compressive strength of composite resin was the highest in the group of 1 W output, exposing for 10 sec with argon laser, followed by the group of 0.5W, exposing for 10 sec with argon laser, the group of exposing for 40 sec with visible light. But there were statistically no significant difference between these three groups(p>0.05). 2. Surface microhardness of composite resin wasn't significantly affected by light curing conditions. 3. BIS-GMA within residual monomer was least detected in the group of exposing for 40 sec. TEGDMA was least detected in the group of 1 W output, exposing for 10 sec with argon laseboth 2mm and 3mm thickness specimen. 4. The degree of conversion of all groups in the 2mm thickness specimen were more than 50%, similar to each other but in the group of 1W, exposing 10 sec with argon laser the degree of conversion was highest in the 3mm thickness specimen. 5. Argon laser could make composite resin to has similar properties with 25% lesser exposure time than visible light.

  • The purpose of the present study was to determine if monocarboxylate transporter(MCT) isoforms and Basigin(Bsg) are expressed in the efferent ductules(ED) and if MCT1 expression is under estrogen receptor(ER)α-regulation in the ED of male reproductive tract. The presence of MCT isoforms and Bsg mRNAs was detected by real-time polymerization chain reaction(PCR), and ERα-mediated regulation of MCT1 expression in the ED was indirectly determined by immuno- histochemistry. Current study found differential expression of MCT isoforms(MCT1, 2, 3, 4, and 8) and Bsg mRNAs in rat ED according to postnatal ages. In addition, comparison of MCT1 expression in the ED between wild type and ERα knockout mice at different postnatal ages showed basolateral localization of MCT1 in ciliated cells of the ED and, in part, ERα- mediated regulation of MCT1 expression. It is suggested that MCTs would play a role in regulation of function of the ED.

  • Optically compensated bend liquid crystal display (OCB-LCD) has many application fields owing to its fast response time and wide viewing angle. However, in order to operate the OCB-LCD in bend state, this device needs quick transitions from the initial splay state to bend state. Unlike conventional approach using transient high voltage for the transition, the OCB-LCD with high surface tilt angle, which was achieved by polymerization of UV curable reactive mesogen monomer under certain voltage, was manufactured and the cell showed bend state initially. Electro-optic and electrical characteristics of the cell were analyzed. The cell shows a fast response time owing to high surface pretilt angle and very low residual DC less than 0.1 V although another polymer layer is formed above polymer alignment layers.

  • High molecular weight syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol)(HMW s-PVA) with number-average degree of polymerization of 10000 and syndiotactic diad content of 61.5%/iodine complex film was prepared. Its adsorption and desorption behaviors of iodine in hot water were investigated. In comparison with atactic PVA film or low molecular weight s-PVA film, the degree of solubility of s-PVA film and the iodine desorption of HMW s-PVA/iodine film in hot water were limited to an extremely lower level. As the soaking time increased, the iodine desorption in hot water was increased. This reason might be explained by the fact that as the soaking time increased, so the iodine adsorption increased not by the stable molecular complex between PVA and iodine but by the simple physical adsorption of iodine.
