  • $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles with nano-sized and non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by spray pyrolysis using the spray solution containing polymeric precursor and $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux material. Nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles. The $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had nano-size and non-aggregation characteristics after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ when the addition amount of $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%. The mean size of particles were 200 nm and 400 nm when the amount of flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%, respectively. The prepared phosphor particles had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product regardless of the content of$ Li_2$$CO_3$ flux and had the maximum brightness when the content of flux was 5 wt %. The photoluminescence intensity of the nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles containing 3 wt.% $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 125% in comparison with that of the micron-sized $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu commercial product.

  • Nano sized $(Pb_{0.5}Ca_{0.5})(Fe_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})O_3$ (PCFN) powders with the stoichiometric composition and the uniform size distribution were successfully synthesized by the metal-citrate process through the calcination of the polymeric precursor which consisted of the metal ions and the organic network. The crystallization of the initial amorphous powders began at $400{\circ}$ and completed at $700{\circ}$. The pyrochlore phase was detected caused by the dissociation of PbO above $900{\circ}$. Single phase perovskite PCFN powders with 40 nm size and uniform shape were obtained through the calcination at $700{\circ}$.

  • Poly(cyclohexane carbonate) diol was synthesized by the alternating copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and $CO_2$ over Cr based transition metal catalysts. The prepared PCCD was applied as a precursor for the preparation of waterborne polyurethane (PUD) in order to investigate an application field of carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate. The scratch resistance and thermal properties of PUDs, which was prepared with two kinds of polymeric diols (PCD and PCCD) were investigated. The scratch resistance and thermal decomposition temperature of PUD film prepared with PCCD is worse than those prepared with PCD, poly(hexamethylene carbonate) glycol. While, glass transition temperature of PUD film prepared with PCCD was higher than that prepared with PCD. It might be due to the rigid cyclohexane structure in the PCCD.

  • There has been much interest in incorporating nanoscale voids into dielectric materials in order to reduce their k value, and thus in producing low-k porous interdielectric materials. One approach to the development of low-k dielectric materials is the templated polycondensation of organosilicate precursors in the presence of a thermally labile, organic polymeric porogen. The other is SiOCH films have low dielectric constant as well as good mechanical strength and high thermal stability through PECVD. In this article we explore the nanopore generation mechanism of organosilicate film using star-shape porogen and SiOCH film using bis-trimethylsilylmethane (BTMSM) precursor.

  • The phase stability in the interface of Sr-doped LaMnO3(LSM)/Gd-doped CeO2(CGO) was examined in this study in order to check the feasibility of using LSM as the cathode material in a low-temperature SOFC(solid oxide fuel cell) using CGO as the electrolyte. For the purpose, CGO powders of Ce0.82Gd0.18O0.91 and two LSM powders having different compositions, La0.9Sr0.1MnO3(LSM10) and La0.5Sr0.5MnO3(LSM50), were synthesized using Pechini method. Then, specimens having the LSM/CGO interface were prepared, heat-treated at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for up to 3 days, and analyzed by XRD and STEM/EDX. Face-centered cubic CGO powders of less than 10 nm size were obtained by calcination of polymeric precursor formed in the process at 45$0^{\circ}C$. Higher calcination temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ was necessary for monoclinic LSM10 and cubic LSM50 powders. LSM powders were coarser than CGO and observed to be in the range of 50~100 nm. No trace of LSM-CGO interaction product was found in the XRD pattern. Also it was known from the concentration profile in the vicinity of the interface that interdiffusion was occurred over only a small penetration depth of ~100 nm order.

  • The SiC-based ceramic nanopatterns were prepared by placing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold from DVD master on the spincoated polyvinylsilaeane (PVS) or allylhydridopolycaybosilane (AHPCS) as ceramic precursors to fabricate line pattern via UV-nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL), and subsequent pyrolysis at $800^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen atmosphere. As the dimensional change of polymeric and ceramic patterns was comparatively investigated by AFM and SEM, the shrinkage in height was 38.5% for PVS derived pattern and 24.1% for AHPCS derived pattern while the shrinkage in width was 18.8% for PVS and 16.7% for AHPCS. It indicates that higher ceramic yield of the ceramic precursor resulted in less shrinkage, and the strong adhesion between the substrate and the pattern caused anisotropic shrinkage. This preliminary work suggests that NIL is a promissing route for fabricating ceramic MEMS devices, with the development on the shrinkage control.

  • Bovine milk is widely consumed by humans and is a primary ingredient of dairy foods. Proteomic approaches have the potential to elucidate complex milk proteins and have been used to study milk of various species. Here, we performed a proteomic analysis using 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF MS) to identify whey proteins in bovine milk obtained soon after parturition (bovine early milk). The major casein proteins were removed, and the whey proteins were analyzed with 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). The whey proteins (2 mg) were separated by pI and molecular weight across pH ranges of 3.0 - 10.0 and 4.0 - 7.0. The 2-DE gels held about 300 to 700 detectable protein spots. We randomly picked 12 and nine spots that were consistently expressed in the pH 3.0 - 10.0 and pH 4.0 - 7.0 ranges, respectively. Following MALDI-TOF MS analysis, the 21 randomly selected proteins included proteins known to be present in bovine milk, such as albumin, lactoferrin, serum albumin precursor, T cell receptor, polymeric immunoglobulin receptor, pancreatic trypsin inhibitor, aldehyde oxidase and microglobulin. These proteins have major functions in immune responses, metabolism and protein binding. In summary, we herein identified both known and novel whey proteins present in bovine early milk, and our sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis revealed their expression pattern.

  • Copoly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)(DAEMA)/butyl acrylate (BA) and copoly(methyl methacrylate)(MMA)/BA/2-(cinnamoyloxy)ethyl methacryate (CEMA), which were cross-linked with dibromoalkane and UV irradiation, respectively, were prepared for the precursors of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) humidity-sensitive films. 3-(Triethoxysilyl)propyl cinnamate (TESPC) was used as a surface-pretreating agent for the attachment of IPN-polyelectrolyte to the electrode surface by UV irradiation. Humidity sensitive polymeric thin films with an IPN structure were prepared by crosslinking reactions of copoly(DAEMA/BA) with 1,4-dibromobutane (DBB) and copoly(MMA/BA/CEMA) by UV-irradiation. The anchoring of an IPN-polyelectrolyte into the substrate was carried out via the photochemical $[2{\pi}+2{\pi}]$ cycloaddition. The resulting humidity sensors showed a high sensitivity in the range of 20~95%RH and a small hysteresis (<1.5%RH). The response time for adsorption and desorption process at 33~94%RH was 48 and 65 s, respectively, indicating a fast response. The effects of the concentration of copolymers, molar ratio of crosslinking agents and time of the precursor solution for dip-coating on their humidity sensitive properties including water durability were investigated.

  • For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

  • To improve mechanical properties of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$composites have been controlled dispersion of ultra low size ZrO$_2$ particles in $Al_2$O$_3$ ceramics by polymeric precursor method (Pechini process). In case of coprecipitation or mechanical mixing of ZrO$_2$ powders with $Al_2$O$_3$, homogeneous dispersion and controlling the ZrO$_2$ size were relatively difficult due to high sintering temperature. So the polyesterization process of Zr/Y(NO$_3$)$_3$-citric acid solution in ethylene glycol with the commercial sub-micron sized o(-alumina powder (Sumitomo AES-11(0.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$)) was adopted in order to obtain homogeneous dispersion of ZrO$_2$ in A1203. By this partial polyesterization process, the homogeneous dispersion of relatively low sized ZrO$_2$in $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$composites was achieved at 1450∼1$600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature range and their mechanical properties were measured.
