We report results on microtribological studies of chemically grafted nanoscale polymer layers of different architecture with thickness below 30 nm. We have fabricated the molecular lubrication coatings from elastomeric tri-block copolymers and tested two different designs of corresponding nanocomposite coatings. We observed a significant reduction of friction forces and an increase of the wear stability when a minute amount of oil was trapped within the grafted polymer layer. These polymer gel layers exhibited a very steady friction response and a small value of the coefficient of friction as compared to the initial polymer coating. A polymer 'triplex' coating has been formed by a multiple grafting technique. The unique design of this layer Includes a hard-soft-hard architecture with a compliant rubber interlayer mediating localized stresses transferred through the topmost hard layer. This architecture provides a non-linear mechanical response under a normal compression stress and allows additional dissipation of mechanical energy via the elastic rubber interlayer.

In this paper, we investigated the surface properties of polymer insulators to improve electrical insulation performance. First, after washing the polymer insulator in various ways, its contact angle was increased, thereby improving the hydrophobic properties and electrical insulation properties. In addition, TiO2 thin films, which have been used as a photocatalytic material and have been applied to the polymer insulator surface of to enhance the surface and electrical insulating properties. For the sputtering method, the contact angle after coating the TiO2 thin film increased with increasing RF power, but it was lower compared to that before coating, indicating that the hydrophobic properties of the surface were slightly deteriorated. Consequently, the electrical properties of the polymer-insulating material were maintained or improved after the TiO2 thin-film coating.
${\alpha},{\omega}$-Hydroxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane (HO-PDMS) was prepared by hydrosilylation of hydrogen terminated polydimethylsiloxane with allyl alcohol. Polydimethylsiloxane modified urethane with isocyanate group (PSU) was prepared from cyclic trimer of hexamethylenediisocyanate with HO-PDMS. PDMS modified urethane base resin with acrylic group (PSUA) was prepared from the urethane reaction of PSU with isocyanate group and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Their structures were characterized using FTIR and NMR. Coating materials were prepared by mixing PSUA, acrylic hardner, photo-initiator, and solvent and coated on PET film to obtain flexible and hard coating film by UV irradiation. Transparency of coating film was 89.7%, contact angle, $88^{\circ}$, and pencil hardness, 3H.
Superporous hydrogels (SPHs) with fast swelling and superabsorbent properties are useful materials in various biomedical fields, by improving the swelling properties of conventional hydrogels based on their unique porous structure. In this study, Eudragit polymers were used as coating materials to control the swelling properties of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) based SPHs by environmental pH. The SPHs were coated with Eudragit L100 and S100 that have different pH characteristics as enteric coating materials by a dip coating method, and their pH dependent swelling behaviors were observed in various pH environments. The swelling of SPHs was inhibited at a low pH range, but significantly enhanced above a characteristic pH of Eudragit polymers. This pH dependent swelling behavior of hydrogels could be modulated by the characteristics of the enteric coating polymers.
New immunoprotecting membranes were prepared by spin coating the amphiphilic random multiblock copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG) or poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) on porous Durapore(R) membrane. The copolymer coating was intended to make a biocompatible, immunoprotecting diffusional barrier and the supporting porous substrate was for mechanical stability and processability. By filling Durapore(R) membrane pores with water, the penetration of coating solution into the pores was minimized during the spin coating process. A single coating process produced a completely covered thin surface layer (~1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness) on the porous substrate membrane. The permselectivity of the coated layer was influenced by PEG block length, polymer composition, and thickness of the coating layer. A composite membrane with the coating layer prepared with PEG 2 K/PTMEG 2 K block copolymer showed that its molecular weight cut-of fat any 40 based on dextran was close to the molecular size of IgG (Mw = 150 kDa). However, IgG permeation was detected from protein permeation test, while glucose oxidase (Mw = 186 kDa) was not permeable through the coated membrane.
The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steels (STSs) with various coatings (organic coating and dry coating) were examined, and their applicability as bipolar plates in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) was validated. The results showed that the organic-coated samples had a significant decrease in anodic and cathodic current density compared to the uncoated sample. However, an increase in carbon black content in the organic coating or additional heat treatment at 700 ℃ resulted in a decrease in corrosion resistance. In addition, improvements in corrosion resistance achieved by adding TiO2 powder to the organic coating were found to be limited. In contrast, dry coating with TiC and CrC exhibited higher corrosion potential, significantly lower current density, and reduced contact resistance compared to the organic coatings. Notably, the TiC-coated sample showed a comparatively lower current density and more stable behavior than the CrC-coated sample. Based on a series of experimental results, a thin TiC coating without defects is proposed as a promising surface treatment strategy for STS bipolar plates in PEMFC.

Silicon carbide ceramics are used for oxidation resistive coating films due to their excellent properties like high strength, good oxidation resistance, and good abrasion resistance, but they have poor formability and are prepared by vapor process which is complicated, costly, and sometimes hazardous. In this study, preparation of silicon carbide coating film by liquid process using polymer precursor was attempted. Coating film was prepared by dip coating on substrate followed by heat treatment in argon at $1200^{\circ}C$. By changing the dipping speed, the thickness was controlled. The effects of plasticizer, binder, or fiber addition on suppression of crack generation in the polymer and ceramic films were examined. It was found that fiber additives was effective for suppressing crack generation.

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is one of the promising representive of polymer gate dielectric for its high resistivity and sutible dielectric constant. PMMA (Mw=96700) films were prepared on p-Si by spin coating method. PMMA were coated compactively and flatly as observeed by AFM. MIS(Al/PMMA/p-Si) structure was made and capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) measurements were done with PMMA films for different thermal treatment temperature. PMMA films were showed proper dielectric constant and breakdown voltage. Above the glass transition temperature PMMA films degraded. C-V measured at various frequencies, dielectric constant increased a little. The absence of hysteresis in the C-V characteristics, which eliminate the possibility of mobile charges in the PMMA films. The observed thermal stability, smooth surfaces, dielectric constant, I-V behavior implies PMMA formed by spin coating can be used as an efficient gate dielectric layer in OTFTs.

A polymeric coating solution based on poly(acryloyl diphosphoric acid)(poly(ADP)) was prepared via a radical polymerization of acryloyl diphosphoric acid using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator in water at 70 $^{\circ}C$. The prepared polymeric coating solution exhibited significant antibacterial activity against salmonella typhimurium, pseudomonas aeruginosa, escherichia coli, and staphylococcus aureus. It also exhibited good antifungal activity against Asperigillus niger and good antiviral activity against the influenza (H1N1) virus. Additionally, it exhibited good flame retardant efficiency after applying it as a coating to a cotton fabric.
Graphite is widely used in electronic industry due to its excellent electrical and thermal properties. However, graphite starts to oxidize around $400^{\circ}C$ that seriously degrades its properties. SiC coating can be applied to graphite foam to improve its high temperature oxidation resistance. In this research, SiC coating on graphite foam was made via preceramic polymer using a polyphenylcarbosilane. 20% of polyphenylcarbosilane in hexane solution was coated onto graphite by dip coating method. Thermal oxidation was carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ for crosslink of the preceramic polymer and the sample were pyrolysized at $800^{\circ}C{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen to convert the preceramic polymer to SiC film. The microstructure of the SiC coating after pyrolysis was investigated using FESEM and oxidation resistance up to $800^{\circ}C$ was evaluated.
