  • We achieved high efficiency and long lifetime in small-molecule organic light-emitting diodes using a blend of polyaniline-based conducting polymer and a perfluorinated ionomer as a hole injection layer (HIL). The HIL formed by single spin coating greatly enhanced the surface work function and thus the hole injection from the anode, which resulted in great improvement in device luminous efficiency. We find that the solution processed HIL outperforms the conventional vacuum-deposited small molecule HIL in terms of the device performance.

  • A new series of highly bright and efficient poly(pphenylenevinylene) s (PPV)s based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) was synthesized via the Gilch polymerization method. The three POSScontaining PPVs are as follows: POSS05- PPV(containing 5 mol % POSS-appended PPV units), POSS25-PPV(containing 25 mol % POSS-appended PPV units), and POSS100-PPV(containing 100 mol % POSS-appended PPV units; this is the first ${\pi}-conjugated$ polymer composed of 100 mol % POSSsappended repeating units). The POSS-containing PPVs exhibit higher glass transition temperatures $(64-77^{\circ}C)$ than that of MEH-PPV $(58^{\circ}C)$, indicating that electroluminescence (EL) devices fabricated with these polymers should have good thermal stabilities. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al were fabricated using the novel POSS-containing PPVs. Surprisingly, the luminescence efficiency (0.48 cd/A at $10540\;cd/m^2$) of the binary blend consisting 5 wt % of POSS25-PPV and 95 wt % of MEH-PPV was found to be enhanced by a factor of 6.4 with a maximum brightness of $11010cd/m^2$ (at 14.3 V).

  • A graphene/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) nano composite was prepared by in-situ polymerization of PU and graphene having isocyanate (iGO) group in order to improve physicochemical/electrical characteristics. The properties of the graphene/WPU nanocomposite can effectively be enhanced as compared pristine WPU; up to 57% of tensile strength and $10^2$ fold of electrical conductivity with introduction of 2 wt% graphene. In addition, mechanical/electrical properties of the graphene/WPU nanocompsite were higher than those of graphene/WPU composite prepared by a simple physical blend method. It might attribute to homogeneous dispersion of iGO in the WPU matrix via covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds between WPU and iGO from the results of morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • Blends consisting of linear shape polylactic acid and star shape polylactic acid (L-PLLA/S-PLLA) have been prepared by melt and solution blending. The effect of blending method on the thermal properties and crystallization behavior of L-PLLA/S-PLLA blends has been investigated. The molecular weight decrease was revealed both in melt and solution blending. S-PLLA was found to be more stable than L-PLLA in the reduction of molecular weight during the course of blending due to its star shape structure. As a result, broad molecular weight distribution was obtained in solution blending. It was found that melting temperature and glass transition temperature decrease with increasing S-PLLA content. Blending method had large influence on the glass transition temperature of PLLA blends, while less effect on melting temperature. From DSC results, it can be noticed that solution blending is more effective blending method to obtain higher crystallinity than melt blending for S-PLLA and blend with higher S-PLLA content.

  • The flame retardant and thermal properties of ortho-cresol novolac (OCN) and biphenyl epoxy blends containing red-phosphorus were investigated. For five types of compounds designed with the volume ratio of OCN and biphenyl epoxy, thermal properties were analysed by TGA or DTC, and flame retardancy effectiveness was estimated through UL-94V test. While the flame retardant and thermal properties were improved with the content of filler and red-phosphorus, the excessive amount of red-phosphorus caused to deteriorate those properties. Using the blends of OCN/biphenyl rather than pure OCN or biphenyl epoxy as a matrix the flame retardancy of composites could be improved by the synergic effects of high thermal resistance of OCN and intumescent property of biphenyl. The flame retardant me chanism of epoxy compound containing red-phosphorus could be thought of the heat-insulating effect of intumescent char-layer formed in the surface of composites.

  • Biomaterials like silk fibroin (SF) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) have received increasing attention in biomedical applications because of their attractive properties such as hydrophobicity and biocompatibility. In this study, efficient systems consisting of interpenetrating SF/PVA hydrogels were prepared as potential candidate for wound dressing applications. A simple approach consisting of sonication and a freezing-thawing technique was adopted to fabricate the hydrogels. Different blend ratios consisting of SF (100, 75, 50, 25 and 0%) with respect to the weight of PVA were prepared. The produced hydrogels were characterized for physico-chemical investigations using various states of techniques like; FE-SEM, TGA, FTIR and tensile strength. The addition of PVA to SF was proved to be beneficial in terms of reducing the pore size and swelling ratio of hydrogels. The mechanical property of SF had been increased by addition of PVA. These results show that SF/PVA hydrogels may serve as potential candidates for wound dressing application.

  • The microcapsules containing triphenyl phosphate (TPP), a flame retardant, were prepared by phase-inversion emulsification technique using the epoxy resin (Novolac type) with excellent physical properties and network structure. This microencapsulation process was adopted for the protection of TPP evaporation and wetting of polymer composite during the polymer blend processing. The TPP, epoxy resin and mixed surfactants were emulsified to oil in water (O/W) by the phase inversion technology and then conducted on the crosslinking of epoxy resin by in-situ polymerization. The capsule size and size distribution of TPP capsules was controlled by mixed surfactant ratio, concentration and TPP contents, The formation and thermal property of TPP capsules were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology and size of TPP capsules were also investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. As the surfactant concentration increased, the TPP capsules were more spherical and mono-dispersed at the same weight ratio of mixed surfactants (F127: SDBS).

  • Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of chitosan for the purpose of useful biomaterials. The possibility of biomaterials prepared from natural polymer as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biocompatibility. These films were inserts in the back of rat and their biodegradability was investigated by the film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rat test showed that medium, high viscosity chitosan induced some suspects of inbiocompatibility in the tissue by goreign body reaction 48 and 72 hours after implantation. Also, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by low viscosity chitosan. This burn ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burn and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of the naked eye and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from chitosan was effective reductio of inflammation than negative group.

  • High frequency electromagnetic(EM) waves are increasingly being applied in industries because of saturationat lower frequency bands as a result of huge demand. However, electromagneticinterference (EMI) has become a serious problem, and as a result, highfrequency EM absorbers are now being extensively studied. Also, recentdevelopments in absorber technology have focused on producing absorbers thatare thin, flexible, and strong. Hence, one-dimension ferrous nano-materials area potential research field, because of their interesting electronic andmagnetic properties. Commercially, EM wave absorbing products are made ofcomposites, which blend the insulating polymer with magnetic fillers. Inparticular, the shape of the magnetic fillers, such flaky, acicular, or fibrousmagnetic metal particles, rather than spherical, is essential for synthesizingthin and lightweight EM wave absorbers with higher permeability. High aspectratio materials exhibit a higher permeability value and therefore betterabsorption of the EM wave, because of electromagnetic anisotropy. Nanowires areusually fabricated by drawing, template synthesis, phase separation, selfassembly, and electrospinning with a thermal treatment and reduction process.Producing nanowires by the electrospinning method involves a conventionalsol-gel process that is simple, unique, and cost-effective. In thispresentation, Magnetic nanowire and dielectric materials coated magneticnanowire with a high aspect ratio were successfully synthesized by theelectrospinning process with heat treatment and reduction. In addition toestimating the EM wave absorption ability of the synthesized magnetic anddielectric materials coated magnetic nanowire with a network analyzer, weinvestigated the possibility of using these nanowires as high-frequency EM waveabsorbers. Furthermore, a wide variety of topics will be discussed such as thetransparent conducting nanowire and semiconducting nanowire/tube with theelectrospinning process.

  • Silk fibroin (SF) is one of the typical protein polymer produced by silkworm, Bombyx mori. SF has been used as textile fiber and surgical suture fur thousands of years due to its unique gloss, handle, and mechanical properties. Recently, SF has been intensively studied to diverse usage for biotechlological and biomedical fields because of their reproducibility, environmental compatibility, non-toxicity, and biological compatibility. Based on its biocompatibility, the possible uses of regenerated SF have been proposed including substrate for cell culture[1], enzyme immobilization[2], and matrix for drug release[3]. (omitted)
